dc208 Winter Adjustments and a draw is proposed! - coebq   (Dec 11, 2008, 7:46 pm)
Always a good thing to be writing about "Winter" when sitting in a warm, sunny spot like Singapore...

Early reports were correct. The Russian fleet escaping the fall of Sevastopol was too badly damaged to continue the fight. With no friendly ports of refuge along the bleak coast of the Black Sea, and no hope of breaking into the Eastern Mediterranean, its captain decided to scuttle the once mighty battleship rather than to see it in the hands of the enemy. Film at 11.

But even while the crew of the doomed Russian fleet was being "rescued" by Austrian authorities, diplomats in capitals across Europe were working furiously to bring a close to the war, now entering its 6th year. Out of this marathon effort comes a proposed two-way, England-Austria draw which now needs to be voted upon.

For those of you uncertain what this entails, if approved, the game would end in a draw with England and Austria declared duel winners while France and Russia would "survive." The proposed draw requires "yes" votes from ALL players to be successful. One "no" vote kills the proposal and the game continues. Votes, like orders, are ALWAYS confidential. I will ask that you provide me with your vote along with your Spring, 1906 orders, which will be due on Monday, December 15 at 2359 GMT.

You can, however, vote early (not often, however), and I highly recommend it. As soon as I have four "yes" votes or one "no" vote, I'll let you know immediately and the game will either end or continue with the Spring turn.

As always thanks for your early orders and good luck!

Bruce

dc208 Fall 1905 - coebq   (Dec 08, 2008, 3:24 am)
Sorry for the delay gentlemen. Bad weekend.

The English are everywhere this year: two amphibious assaults, support for the beleaguered garrison of Moscow and a fleet quietly set sail for warmer waters. And while France plays the waiting game--even pulling back in the Western Med, the Archduke of Austria-Hungary consolidates his hold on Russia further and grows ever stronger. At the same time though he allows a lone Russian fleet to escape into the Black Sea. Will she be able to continue her journey or will she be scuttled this Winter and sent to the bottom?

No retreats are needed so we move directly to Winter adjustments for 1905, in which everyone owes me something. They will be due on Wed, Dec 10 at 2359 GMT.

Here are the details. Let me know if you see any problems.

Your faithful GM,

Bruce

dc208 Spring 1905 - coebq   (Dec 02, 2008, 2:07 am)
Insurrection is an art, and like all arts has its own laws. or so sayeth a famous Russian revolutionary...

Speaking of art, did you know that the Japanese Puzzle box is a merging of two Art-Forms? The art of creating a box with sliding panels that can only be opened if you know the exact sequence of moves. The second art is that of wood marquetry or 'Zaiku' where different woods in their natural color are carefully cut and glued together making beautiful patterns. They are actually very cool.

And frankly, this art imitates our life (or this particular Diplomacy life anyway) as while the colors are different across the board; the pattern is distinct as East and West now squarly face each other down over the. Or is it only a sliding, panel we are looking at, one which only leads us down a false path?

In other news, an English army is destroyed as it tries unsuccessfully to move into the Kingdom of Bohemia. It found the door shut and then had no where to turn. On a lighter note, the chaos known as Munich finally sees a savior in the French army which arrived there this season. The question remains, however: Will the French, unlike the English, be able to hold onto it, bringing some semblance of order to this city ravaged by anarchy? Mankind across the globe awaits the answer...

We have no retreats so we move into the Fall turn. Since I have travel at the end of the week, I will breal my own rule and ask that you get those orders into me on Saturday, 6 Dec. at 23:59 hours. If something thinks they cannot do it over the weekend, please send them in early. I hate to wait until Monday for only four players.

Here are the details. Please let me know if you see a mistake.

Good luck and best regards.

Bruce

dc208 Spring 1904 - coebq   (Nov 14, 2008, 8:13 am)
Commanders, the orders are in (or at least most of them anyway) and we have another turn complete. Our German leader has sought asylum in Namibia, or somewhere anyway, as he did not get a set of orders to me--nor even an email for that matter. Second NMR and thus I reluctantly allow the glory that was deteriorate into civil unrest...

Nothing historically from your fearless GM today, but that's because you are making your own history...The lines are being drawn between the East and the West as the others try and find somewhere to hide, mostly to no avail.

As our defeated English fleet in Norway only had one option, I took the liberty. Fall orders will be due on Wednesday, November 19 at 2359 GMT.

DC208 Early Winter 1903 - former.trout   (Nov 02, 2008, 8:39 pm)
Heya folks,

Turkey retreats to Armenia, and simple as that we move onto the Winter 1903 adjustments. I fully expect Bruce to be back on top of things tomorrow and to take hold of the reins once more. However, in the unlikely event that I am wrong please keep me CC'd on any adjustment orders you send in.

If, for any reason, Bruce is unable to set the Winter deadline then I will adjudicate the turn on Tuesday, November 4th (11:59 PM GMT).

Thanks, everyone, for putting up with me while I filled in for Bruce. Hope you all had a great weekend. Cheers!

DC208 - Late Orders for Early Winter - former.trout   (Nov 01, 2008, 9:44 pm)
Hey all,

Not sure whether Phildor sent his retreat to Bruce or not, but it was not received by me... Deadline was a couple hours ago - but owing to the possibility of a simple communication error, we'll grant a 24 hour grace period before retreating the unit OTB.

Happy Halloween weekend, folks!

DC208 - Fall 1903 - A Scramble Overseas - former.trout   (Oct 31, 2008, 11:05 am)
Heya folks,

Thanks for the patience there. Bruce got me all the orders and the Fall 1903 adjudication is attached below. Looks like quite the treacherous slope you're all climbing. =P

One retreat is needed before moving on into Winter adjustments. Turkey needs to find a new home for its Syrian garrison - either Armenia, Syria or OTB. I'll set the deadline for the retreat for Saturday, November 1st (11:59 PM GMT). If Bruce gets back before then, however, he may revise this accordingly.

Yes, please send the retreat to both Bruce and I. If the deadline passes before he is back up and running I will put out the retreats phase.

Cheers everyone. Please just let me know if you spot any errors in the turn results...

Subject: DC208 Spring 1903 Results

Therefore, a prudent ruler ought not to keep faith when by so doing it would be against his interest...If men were all good, this precept would not be a good on; but as they are bad, and would not observe their faith with you, so you are not bound to keep faith with them. Nor have legitimate grounds ever failed a prince who wished to show colorable excuse for the non-fulfillment of his promise.

In other words Machiavelli is telling us to not worry about those broken promises--people forget them really very quickly--particularly when you are strong and in a position to offer them something.

As a new year begins, the battle becomes desperate for some while others begin to look elsewhere for a little more action. In the East, the Sultan once again holds the Black Sea, but at the same time orders his men to perform a tactical withdraw, abandoning the ancient city of Constantinople and perhaps preparing for his final stand. Even while supporting his relentless assault on the Turks, the Austrian leader orders his units West, opening a new front; but against whom exactly? In the West the chaos continues, although an alliance may have shown itself...

My apologies for the delay in getting this adjudication out. I wanted to give our new Russia the time he needed, but was then dumped on by work.

Please watch those orders folks. If the RP doesn't accept it as written, I check to see what's up, but I can't make substantive changes. We had one ambiguous order this turn which could not be accepted and another completely erroneous one. Ultimately, the ambiguous order would not have mattered as it would have resulted in a bounce, but I would hate to see someone lose a center on a badly written order.

Let's get this one back on-track and moving. No retreats are due so straight into the Fall we go. Deadline will be Next Monday, October 27 at 2359 GMT. Hey, I'll be in Chicago!

Let me know if you spot any errors or need for time to plot and negotiate.

Good luck and best regards gentlemen!

DC208 Spring 1903: Results are in (and you'll want... - coebq   (Oct 23, 2008, 2:35 am)

Bruce

DC208 Game On! - coebq   (Oct 16, 2008, 2:07 am)
Fellow Revolutionaries,

Please welcome David Cross, our new Russia!

David assumes the role of a well positioned Tzar--so start negotiating with him and win him over to your cause! Here are his details:

First: David
Last : Cross
Email: BearlyTzu(at)Gmail.com
Yahoo: BearlyTzu
Game : dc208

I'd like to give everyone a chance to get to know David and David a chance to get to know you all (be careful David--a shifty bunch it is), so let's set the deadline for Spring, 1903 on Tuesday Oct 21 at 2359 GMT.

I have orders from most of you and if I acknowledged them with a return note to you already, they will remain valid unless you change them. In other words, send in a new set if you'd like or don't--up to you.

David, if you have any questions about previous turns, game management, etc. let me know. I will be happy to discuss and provide you additional background as needed. In the meantime, here is a reprint of our last full adjudication: Winter, 1902.

Good luck and best regards!

Bruce

DC208 Game on Hold! - coebq   (Oct 13, 2008, 9:41 pm)
All,

I am sorry to report that our Russia, Adam, has written me to dropping out of the game. The circumstances were unforeseen and I wish Adam all the best. I'm sure we'll see him back in a game near you soon!

In the meantime, I will need to get with our fearless DC leadership and look to find a new Russia. Shouldn't be too tough to find a replacement given the excellent position Russia is in right now.

Stand by and we'll be back on track soonest.

Best regards.

Bruce

DC208 Fall 1902 Results - coebq   (Oct 02, 2008, 7:12 am)
In wartime, truth is so precious that she should be attended by a bodyguard of lies.

The truth of the matter is that things are getting interesting in our Europe...

The German leader orders his armies and fleets to defend their territories at all costs, but it is to no avail as English armies in Belgium sweep northward into Holland and the low countries sending the German fleet to the bottom. The navies of France likewise make a strong move into Spain and establish a presence in the warm Mediterranean. In the east, even in death the Turkish soldiers are tenacious as the ghosts of thousands of Turkish soldiers massacred earlier in the year vainly attempt to hold onto Bulgaria.

Hyperbole aside, there is one retreat due, and Italy can retreat its fleet Wes to Naf, Tun, Tyn or OTB. As there was only one retreat due, I took the liberty of retreating the unit to Tun. David, if you don't like that, let me know ASAP or NLT Friday, October 3.

If Italy makes a change, I will publish it.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, check the previous map/status before sending in your orders; check your spelling and abbreviations--it must be correct when I receive it--and REMEMBER if you are moving a fleet to a territory with two coasts, you MUST specify which coast you are moving to, otherwise the move is invalidated!

Adjustments are going to be due on Monday, October 6 with Spring 1903 orders then due on Friday, October 11. All times are 2359 GMT.

As always please check the details below and help me make sure it was not just the red wine talking!

Thanks again guys for the timeliness of your submissions. We are 100 percent to date!

Good luck and best regards.

Bruce

DC208 Fall 1901 Results - coebq   (Sep 18, 2008, 12:15 am)
But I recognize no infallible authority, even in special questions; consequently, whatever respect I may have for the honesty and the sincerity of such or such an individual, I have no absolute faith in any person...
_____

My dear despots,

Well done! State-to-state cooperation is evident at the end of 1901 and while no knives (or other such weapons) were obvious at the party, some of our leaders may no longer have absolute faith in one another. Or do they...? Certainly no one prevented another from a build (or two).

So lots of builds at the end of this first year, with no retreats due. Let's get them in by Monday, Sep 22 at 11:59gmt with Spring 1902 Orders then due on Thursday, Sep 25 at the normal time. You all have been good about getting your orders in thus far so I think we can keep things moving quickly. If anyone feels they need more time than that, let me know ASAP.

A couple of important administrative notes:

Please remember to include the type of unit you are moving with your orders, eg, F xxx-xxx. Also, if you'd like to include press (which is encouraged) makes certain you tell me when you'd like it published. If you don't tell me, it gets published at my convenience!

As always let me know if you spot an error.

Good luck and best regards!

Bruce
