DC223 - Spring 1910 & End of Game - txurce   (Apr 29, 2009, 10:59 am)
I want to thank Frank for allowing me to take such an excellent starting position, running the game with his usual frightening efficiency, and adding the humor that always makes me enjoy the adjudications even more.

These adjudications were easy to enjoy on their own, of course, since I was handed a position where no one was threatening me, and well-established hostility further played into my hands.  At war with France, Germany had no choice but to accept me as his ally, even though his rear was exposed throughout.  We pushed west along the north while Turkey and I pushed west along the south.  There wasn't much France or Italy could do about it, since they were outnumbered on both fronts, and it became worse for France when the original Italian ruler failed to respond and dropped out.

The sword of Damocles fell on Germany just as he was about to swamp France, and from then on the solo was inevitable.  France saw the writing on the wall and helped bring about an end in which he was still in a strong position.  I started to cooperate with England toward the end, partly because I was impressed by how well he fended off invaders with two units. I appreciated everyone's efforts, as a matter of fact, so did my best to make sure that everyone survived.  In the process, I was glad to see that my ally Turkey never stopped moving forward.  This is my kind of alliance: one where everyone gains, but I gain more!

Thanks again,

Jorge

DC223 - End of Game statement england - pieandmash   (Apr 29, 2009, 10:59 am)
The highs and lows-

in brief the highs for me were it was great to play against an international cast, to spar with Joao in scandinavia, to find a new solid reliable ally in Doug. To have a top GM.

The lows- the lack of comms with all but 2 players. The game duration- it was all over a long time ago. The messed up moves by Italy that cost his allies me and France the game (or at least a stalemate).

Other stuff-
This game hammered home to me how vital committed reliable allies are, that and good communication.
My early and lasting alliance with Doug was a pleasure to be part of. Many thanks to Jorge for finishing off Joao's work so efficiently ..grrr!

thanks all

Max

"At the start of Spring 1910
the remaining Powers in Europe, having gone through months
of extensive diplomacy, decided to acknowledge a Russian
victory by accepting the proposed Russian Solo.

People throughout Europe rejoiced at the prospect of a
lasting peace. No more sons and daughters that would go to
faraway countries to never return. No more tax increases to
fund fighting in places that no one had heard of
before."

-----------------

Congratulations to Jorge Saralegui for taking Russia
to these heights. Jorge took over from Joao at the end of
1905 with a Russia that with 9 SCs was already 2 ahead of
the second-placed player. He never gave his lead away and
ended the game with 16 SCs but more importantly a SOLO
win.

Also congratulations to everyone that managed to
survive this brutal war and the scheming of the nations'
rulers. Players that were in it from the start: Max, Doug,
Joshua and Stefan.
My hat-off to Max for consistently continued to play
even though he saw his English units reduced to 2 already
at the end of 1905 - after a brutal beating by the Russians
- and never seemed to have recovered from it.

Stefan, you were next on Russia's path of
destruction whne your units were halved by a major Russian
invasion in 1908 and further reduced to 1 in 1909.
Jerry, my special thanks for stepping in for Italy in
early 1907 so the distribution of power in the Mediterranean
wouldn't be upset. Not the easiest start with an Italy
that had just gone from 5 to 4 SCs.

Doug, being furthest removed from Russia, you played
it well with your neighbours and survived with 7 SCs incl.
London.
Joshua, with the Russian aggressor as your neighbour
you must have extraordinary diplomacy skills to survive the
game with 7 SCs incl. two in Italy.

Attached is the map as it exists at the end of the
game.
I enjoyed it a lot to master this game. It had some
interesting situations like the Russian Fleet in the English
Channel and later the Italian army in Berlin.
For those of you who copied me in on their comments or
sent me their often humorous remarks, thank you very much:
this makes the difference between just adjudicating the game
and living it.

The administration around the endgame and the scores
will be updated on the website soon.
Meanwhile I would welcome your feedback on this
game.

DC223 - Fall 1909 adjudication - bielf11   (Apr 20, 2009, 6:43 pm)
Fall 1909: a season of miscommunication.
German army in Holland attack Belgium but fails; meanwhile Russian troops from Kiel arrive at the border with Holland only to find that the German army had left (be it only temporarily); and the French had expected the Russians in Kiel to attack Holland so when they arrived at the border with Holland, they only saw a puzzled Russian unit. Sometimes the decisions of the people in command are just beyond the comprehension of the footsoldiers!
The Italian Fleet in Apulia is forced out by the Turks and needs to retreat. The Turks retreat from Russian territory it had taken in Spring.
The French and the Russians go for certainty. And it seems to pay off.
The English bravely hold their positions and kill... ...some time, with a cup of tea.

One retreat due by Tuesday April 21 at 23:00 GMT.

Spring 1909: the Russian Solo endgame proposal was voted down.
And thus the conquest continues.
Seems that France and Russia have a language problem on which unit is supporting and which needs to be supported for its joint attack on Kiel. The German army in Kiel succumbs to the advancing Russian war machine and is destroyed. Its attempt to avoid the confrontation with the Russians by moving to Ruhr failed because in turn its army in Ruhr saw its destination Belgium snatched away by the French; but only because the Russian fleet in the North Sea cut the German support from Holland.
The Russian army in Triest, perhaps to its own surprise, has been able to move into Venice as the Italians have left voluntarily for Apulia. Was it because they sensed Russian pending doom without the French support they had been receiving sofar?
Meanwhile the Russians may have been served a surprise themselves as the Turkish army has entered Serbia. Or was this an orchestrated manoever by these two Powers? Clearly Turkey is advancing West and Italy will find it hard to hold on to its turf.
England has done its all too familiar shuffle again, trying to keep a low profile, they say.
With 3 Powers having been reduced to only 2 units, who will be next to feel the wrath of the ruling Powers?
No retreats this Summer.

French fleet in Holland has retreated to Helgoland Bay.
And this Winter we see a huge change in the European balance of power.
Russia has 14 SCs now with the runner-up, Turkey, with 'only' 7 SCs.
Turkey who just switched places with France who has 6 SCs.
And then there is the minor league with Germany, England, and Italy with 3 or 2 SCs.

DC223 - Fall 1908 adjudication - bielf11   (Apr 07, 2009, 11:30 am)
Fall 1908: full-scale attack on German positions by Russian and French troops. The German army in Burgundy is disbanded but Germany manages to dislodge the French fleet in Holland.
Russia also makes an attempt at Venice but could have known that French/Italian troops again would cooperate to resist.
Italy finds it bounces in Naples with the Turkish troops. The Pasha meanwhile solidifies its position in the Mediterranean.
England is again ignored by the other Powers.

DC223 - Spring 1908 Adjudication - bielf11   (Mar 30, 2009, 11:21 pm)
Spring 1908: "The Russian Bear is out of its cage".

Spring shows the Russian army taking Munich while other units are closing in on other German territory. Is this the end of the German-Russian friendship? Has Germany upset Russia in any way or was the opportunity irresistable for the Tzar?
All the while the German army was fighting on its Western front against the French. For years the Germans and the French seemed to be locked in a stand-off but recently Germany appeared to gain ground (in Fall it took Burgundy and now it moved on Belgium). Apparently Russia did not like the prospect of such a successful neighbor. As a result the Russians have redrawn the european map.
The French meanwhile are forced out of Belgium despite the support cut by the French fleet in HEL and the by the Russian fleet in NWG. It seems that the French are consolidating their positions by moving into London, Paris, and the Gulf of Lyon.
The Italians and the Turks are still in a stand-off over the Ionian Sea. Was that anticipated by the Turkish Pasha and did he therefor order his fleet to Napels and Eastern Mediterranean?
And England? It did not get much attention from the other Powers this season. We like to believe that this is the result of new negotiations but evil tongues predict this to be the beginning of the end of the English Power.

Hello all,
This is Josh, the Turkish ruler. Regarding the next season, I will submit my orders for the 30th on time, but the week of the 29th-4th I will be in New Orleans and probably have little or no access to the internet, and thus my email. For the GM, I request an extension on the season following Spring 1908.
Thanks,

DC223 - Fall 1907 adjudication - bielf11   (Mar 23, 2009, 7:27 pm)
Fall 1907: Not much to report but there definitely some things worth mentioning.
in the ongoing stalemate in between France and Germany, Germany has changed its strategy. And with success. The French army in Burgundy is forced to retreat. Germany also enters the North Sea with support from Russia that it wouldn't have needed as the French fleet moves to Helgoland Bight, right on the border of the German empire. Russia seems to take it easy. Most of its units kept their position. Although Serbia was taken, it coincided with a Turkish exit to Bulgaria. The Turks and the Italians had a standoff in the naval battle over the Ionian Sea, but since the Italians had left unprotected the Turkish fleet from Napels swiftly moved in.

The proposal for Draw between France and Russia was voted DOWN.

I just posted an announcement on our DC site to find a replacement.

DC223 - Spring 1907 adjudication - bielf11   (Mar 17, 2009, 6:33 am)
Spring 1907
-----------------
NMR from Italy. And with Albania under attack from the Turks, Italy's fleet in Albania is disbanded. And Napels is flying the Turkish banner, too. The Turks in turn lose their fleet in Tunis under attack from the French who are slowly expanding south. France successfully defends Belgium - with a huge combined army and fleet of 4 units. And of course, then you find that no one bothered to attack Belgium. Germany instead aims for the North Sea. Its Russian support is however rudely interrupted by a bold English attempt to enter the Norwegian Sea. In its North and in Scandinavia Russia executed an intricate set of moves where navy and army seem to have switched places.
