DC252 Persia EOGS - psychosis1973   (Sep 30, 2009, 8:56 am)
From a Persian perspective:

My opening thoughts on being allocated Persia was that I had a decent position, but I'd need to work with one of Greece or Egypt to get some decent growth. Egypt was more talkative, so Egypt and I allied fairly early in the game which allowed me to run to the north and make advances there. This wasn't without some nervousness on my part - Garry and I had been in a similar position in an Aegean game, with me getting stabbed and eliminated fairly early.

I worked with Egypt for most of the early and middle parts of the game, gradually beating Greece down...Egypt's growth stalled somewhat after a couple of years, as Carthage put pressure on him, but he somehow managed to convince Carthage that Rome was his best target. However, around about this point, thoughts of a solo entered my head due to my good defensive position and (marginal) supply centre lead. I agonised for several turns, and eventually chose to stab Egypt in year 6, grabbing Athens and Sparta off him and moving on Jerusalem.

I thought I could solo at this point, as I figured that Rome and Carthage putting aside their differences was unlikely, and I thought I'd have an outside change of a solo even if they somehow worked together - the south and centre of the board was secure, and I was making gains in the north - the question was how quickly I could make those gains.

As it turned out, Carthage and Rome quickly started working together (and well played to both for sorting that out quickly!), scuppering my chances - I got to 17, but that proved unsustainable - and there was a couple of nervous moments when I realised that Carthage and Rome could take Sarmatia/Dacia if I wasn't careful, which would expose my undefended Chersonesus/Sinope area. I managed to shore up my defences with a couple of convoys to Macedonia. I figured a two way draw would be fraught with danger (the temptation on both sides would be to grab that extra centre for a solo) so realistically a three way draw was the best I could hope for, so I proposed that, and it was voted through.

Great variant, as you need to balance armies and fleets effectively to get a good position, and I like the fact that there's only 5 powers on the board.

Couple of questions for other players:
- Did any of you think a solo for me was a likelihood at any point?
- To Egypt - did you see the stab coming?
- Carthage/Rome - did you settle your differences quickly when you realised the risk of me soloing?

As always, thanks to the other players and the GM for running the game so smoothly!

Michael

A relatively short and sweet game at only 166
days, dc252 is called a 3-way Draw between Carthage, Persia,
and Rome.  Egypt eeks out a Survival, and Greece
didn't quite make it to the Middle Ages.  This is
one of my favorite variants, and has now been played 6 times
with Carthage and Persia still retaining the
highest overall performaces following this
game.

See:  http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/country_stats.php?map=Ancient
Med.

End-Game-Statements are appreciated from all so
send those in while the game is fresh on your mind.
Thanks are due to the players for making this an easy one to
GM, as there was rarely a time that I was tracking anyone
down for orders.

See you next
game,

dc252 f09 results! - FuzzyLogic   (Sep 23, 2009, 4:05 pm)
Egypt hangs on for one more turn in Thebes but it comes at a price as Alexandria falls to the Persians who cut their losses with some crafty attacks. Rome scores a build, putting a new unit on the map to continue his recovery from near death.

PRESS:

The Thebes Telegraph and Scroll: Reports have filtered into Thebes that elephants! were seen in Memphis and even in the outer provinces of Thebes. The Sun God Garry had previously warned his subjects that an eclipse of the Great Sun God was forthcoming: "My subjects. You have been naughty and evil. You have not fought hard enough to defend your god and thus I have been forced to invite my friends from deeper in Africa to come and help our empire."

Word has been circulated that the Great Desert God Fredrik has agreed to aid our liege and will let him reside in Thebes as long as he promises to use his royal guard to defend Thebes from the uncouth Persian barbarians and their clan leader Michael.

Winter due Friday 9/25, 4pm Central.

Carthage: Build 1
Rome: Build 1
Persia: Remove 1
Egypt: Lucky to be alive

There is a 3-way CRP draw proposed too, which we'll vote on this spring. If I happen to get 4 yes-votes in by the Winter deadline, I'll call the game then, tho voting isn't due till next Spring.

Today the Men in Black enter a minor readjustment period, as the troops in Dalmatia are dislodged to Illyria. Other than that, just a bit of reshuffling takes place. Unless you're the Egyptians who knowing them probly see this turn as a "glass half empty" sort of turn...

NEXT: Fall 09 due next Monday 9/21, 6pm Central.

Enjoy!

Persian forces regroup this turn, while Egypt says “It’s all Greek to me”. Can the men in black pull it off? If so it’ll take at least another year as the draw is voted down, and 17 doesn’t win it. There are a few builds tho:

Carthage: Build 1
Persia: Build 1
Egypt: Remove 1

Let’s set Builds for Tuesday 9/8, 6pm Central, tho I’ll be in and out this holiday weekend so if I get all 3 sets sooner I’ll send them out.

Today's adjudication comes to you from the City of Brotherly Love, and it's fitting too as Carthage seems to share the love all over this round, helping both Rome and Egypt to centers. I'm sure there was some love in there for Greece too, but he's eliminated so we'll leave the analysis to the pros.

NEXT: Builds, due Friday 8/21, 6pm Central / 2300 GMT:

Rome: Build 1
Persia: Build 2
Greece: Remove F ADR
Egypt: Remove 1

There was one retreat but Egyptian F GOP could only go to Thebes so I just moved it there.
Note I dont have a graphic editor where I'm at, so y'all can open the .dpy and save one yourself this time.

Like a cool breeze on a midsummer day, today we get a refreshing early morning adjudication. I have to admit it's a nice breather GMing this game, I go to my folder and all the orders are there. This game of course coming on the heels of the nightmare of tracking down orders from 20 newbies in WWIV.

But enough of my ramblings of sugar and spice and all things nice, it's time for some war! And there's no shortage of that around here...

Egypt and Carthage face off in the Libyan Sea
Persians impose their influence across Central Europe
Roman peninsula is coming under some heavy fire
Greece brings out their fattest ladies for a special performance

That’s it! Builds will be due Wed 7/22, since a player is away. If by some chance I get a set of 4 sooner, count on an early winter.

Romans take the royal bath this turn, as Sardinia falls to the Carthaginians, Ravenna becomes a home away from home for the Greeks, and they’re booted out of Athens by the Persian navy.

What lies ahead for the besieged Spartans? With 4 fleets surrounding of 3 different nationalities, will the Greeks live to build once more? And what’s going to happen to the love-fest in the desert – Can the Egyptians and Carthaginians share the same pyramids forever?

Find out – in 2 weeks! As one player is on vacation.

Friday July 17 is our next deadline for Fall 05. 6pm Central / 2300 GMT.

PS – there was one retreat, but Roman F Athens could only go to Epirus so I just nudged it there. Aidan, if you prefer OTB let the group know w/in 48 hours else the retreat will stand.

Enjoy,
-mike

dc252 timetable - FuzzyLogic   (Jun 27, 2009, 5:08 pm)
A player is going out of town July 4 thru 14, so we’ll get this winter by Tuesday (or sooner), then I’d like to run Spring 05 by Friday July 3. This way we can get a turn completed by the time we go on pause. Then the next turn after that will be in 2 weeks, Friday July 17. Note July 3 may be a work holiday for some in the US, if that is a problem to meet, pls let me know.

Thanks!

Note there were lots of bounces, so be sure you order a retreat to a legit space, and if 2 units retreat to the same space, they both disband!
