DC261 - French EOG - txurce   (May 25, 2010, 7:57 pm)
Ben,
As I told you elsewhere, I thought you played a solid game, and a very good one for a novice.  Your initial plans made sense, and your decision to stick with A/I rather than join G/E was reasonable enough on the face of it.  In effect you chose to stick with a neutral known entity over an unknown player offering you an alliance with your enemies.  You would have been better served negotiating some active support from Italy in light of your choice - especially after Russia collapsed - but I wouldn't question it.

For the record, England and I didn't cede territory to Austria in favor of stopping you.  The map and our numbers virtually dictated that we play defense in the east, and try what offensive moves we could in the west.  I steadily tried to win you over to our side, but having you join in a fatally compromised position - which is what finally occurred - couldn't (and didn't) do us any good.

Again, this is where I think you made your only real mistake: not switching sides when your allies refused to propose a three-way draw.  Given the map layout, a more experienced player would have seen the writing on the wall and jumped before being pushed.

I think any player would respond to such
provocation in normal circumstances by declaring all-out war on the player
who had stabbed them. But that player had left the game and I was faced
with a new Germany who, while talking peace, wasn't willing to renew our joint
fight against England. He asked for a three-way G/F/E pact, which would
have forced me to either stagnate or attack Italy, neither of which seemed
like appealing options.

This left me rather confused and I responded,
probably unwisely, by lying to the new Germany, stabbing him,
and getting the satisfaction of taking Belgium back for a while. I tried
what was very much a plan B of allying with Russia against
G/E.

It didn't work. Russia was wiped out, Germany
and England stayed friends, and I was forced to turn to my Italian ally for
support. A three way alliance of A/I/F was always going to make steady progress
against G/E, and I had hopes of a three-way draw, but G/E- perhaps
understandably, given how I had provoked them! - chose to cede supply centres to
Austria on their eastern flank while throwing their full weight against France
on their western flank. Inevitably this forced me to put all my forces on my
northern front, leaving myself wide open to the inevitable Italian invasion
through the Med.

This achieved Germany's short-term aim of forcing
me to swap sides, in the hope that a G/E/F defensive front could force a
five-way draw. But A/I had timed their strike against me well, and already had
enough strength between them to power ahead to victory - eventually graciously
conceding a two-way draw which left me among the three survivors. Well played
Benjamin and Jim.

DC261 - German EOG - txurce   (May 15, 2010, 1:35 am)
Some games just don't work out the way you imagined.  I replaced the original German leader early on, based on the map posted on the game site.  I quickly found out that the map was wrong, and the position that had attracted me wasn't there.

My story of the rest of the game dovetails with my failure to convince first Russia and then France - both seemingly new to PBEM Diplomacy - that they were going to be stabbed by Austria and Italy.  A/I won those diplomatic battles, and eventually won the game.  Russia and particularly France showed good game traits at different times, but were undone, in my opinion, by simple lack of game experience.  Russia didn't see that turning against me left him far more exposed than if he had gone against Russia.  And I had no idea why he chose to put his last center under the protection of Austria's ally instead of England, who actually needed him.  Italy knocked him off a turn or two later.

At this point it was clear to me that Austria and Italy, both strong veteran players, were joined at the hip and would be tough to stop.  I made a couple of efforts to win over their French ally, but he broke each of our agreements.  Afterward he told me that he was focused on taking back Belgium, which my predecessor had apparently taken from him.  He also felt he had no reason to switch sides, which was reasonable enough.  There was little that England and I could do to check the AFI triple alliance.  Eventually the hopelessness of our situation became obvious enough that I asked France why his alliance didn't propose a three-way draw.  He said they had no clear answer.

The answer was obvious to me: they were going to stab him as soon as it was safe to do so.  France chose to hope for the best, which is a common enough mistake, and especially for an inexperienced player.  It's hard to reverse direction without a smoking gun - even if the gun is aimed in your general direction.  As soon as their advance reached a point from which a stab made victory certain, Italy stabbed him.  France then joined England and me,  Catching A/I off-guard a couple of times gave us a few extra years and a glimmer of hope. just not enough.

This game was frustrating in many ways, but also educational.  In reviewing why I failed to win over either Russia or France when it would have made a difference, I re-tuned my diplomatic antenna for future games.  And by being forced to play a losing, defensive game for several months, I had to learn to take pleasure in successful tactics, even as the odds against their really paying off grew progressively worse.  In the end, I think I came out of it a better Diplomacy player.  And I actually had fun doing it.

DC261 - Italian EOG - Kenshi777   (May 14, 2010, 12:04 pm)
This may not be as detailed as I would like since I'm on the road in
Minneapolis right now (no access to the RP history of this game) but I
think I can talk most of it from memory.
First of all, thanks to Josh and all the players for a very enjoyable
game, and especially to Jorge for stepping in after Bruce's departure
so the game could continue uninterrupted.
Coming in to this game, I had something to prove - an undesirable
reputation for being stab-happy as a result of DC 229. Accordingly, I
played this game with much more firm alliances than I typically do,
and decided very early in the game to forgo a solo run in favor of a 2
or 3 way draw. I had very little history with any of the players
aside from Jim in Austria (who I had played with before), and Mark in
England, who was a player in one of my Dark Ages games here in DC.
I was fortunate to find willing allies in Austria and France. Wasn't
sure if Jim would welcome me as an ally or not coming into this game -
we had quite the scuffle in our most recent previous game. Looking
east, Turkey left a critical vulnerability open early that allowed for
an invasion. Following Austria's lead, we followed through on that
attack to remove Russia from the south as well. Eliminating David was
not one of my goals, but unfortunately he suffered the curse of the
Russian, and faced attacks in the north and south simultaneously. The
alliance with Austria solidified into a two-way draw pact at this
time, and from this point forward we were playing towards that end.
All the same, Jim and I were both quite cautious not to leave
sufficient stab opportunities open to one another that would enable
either of us to reach 18 at the other's expense.
Shifting attentions west, I seriously entertained bypassing France
entirely - my alliance with him was not all smoke and mirrors. And I
must admit there is a strong argument to be made that I *should* have
remained loyal to him, at least longer than I did - that the campaign
against England and Germany would have been concluded much more easily
had I done so. Regardless, I saw an opportunity, and under pressure
to maintain the pace of Austrian gains, I took advantage. Ben L. was
a good ally and very easy to work with - I took no pleasure out of
stabbing him, and hope to have another opportunity to play with him
again in the future.
As the game transitioned into the endgame phase, it kind of got
sloppy. I botched my orders on one occasion, setting A/I plans back a
full three seasons. I would not have faulted Jim for stabbing me in
response to that, and I suspect the thought did cross his mind. Still
- when Jim Rossiter gives his word, you can take it to the bank, and
fortunately for me, the setback was 100% reversible. So we quickly
recovered the lost momentum and position.
The endgame became a slow war of attrition, one that would, barring an
A/I stab, eventually result in guaranteed success. Gascony could be
forced, and then the German Army in Ruhr would be overloaded in its
task to defend both Kiel and Burgundy. Even if I was dislodged from
Gascony, it could be recaptured, and the guessing game could be
repeated indefinitely. So it was only a matter of time until either
Burgundy or Kiel was dislodged, which would have resulted in the
collapse of the EFG line. What happened from there was anybody's
guess, but I believe both Jim and I would have stuck to the agreed
pact and pushed all the way to 17-17.
That said, I commend EFG for their seamless coordination - whoever was
calling the shots in that group did so very effectively, and organized
a strong defense. Your survival points were well earned, and I look
forward to seeing you all again soon in DC.
Thanks!
B.

DC261 - GAME OVER! - Cool_Beans   (May 14, 2010, 2:18 am)
What a total coincidence that I checked my Diplomacy folder just now for the first time since I was knocked out of the game all those months ago!
Since the game only just finished, are the winners and survivors willing to circulate end of game statements to all the players? I'm still very interested in reading these.
I hope you're all well,
David
