dc287 Congo EOG - FuzzyLogic   (Aug 22, 2010, 9:09 am)
Hey all,

Just back from a week in Disney World to a solo victory.
Smile Tho I figured I had it as of last turn, cuz I was watching that 25 and
trying to get there.  Overall I think that 25 may be low for victory
conditions, as it’s not close enough to half the dots on the board.
A 2-way draw is near impossible, and a 3-way very unlikely…  With 70
sc, and if anyone gets 25 they win, something like 23-23-24 would be tough to
pull off.  Thus bumping it up a couple centers might be good.  Maybe
28 or 30?  Other than that, I love this map!  It is very nicely done,
and I’ve played it twice now and enjoyed it both times.  Last time I
was China and got slaughtered.  This time as a replacement Congo.
The straits are a great addition, I like variants that add or change a few
simple aspects of the game like this does, and that don’t get too
complex.  This meets all those desires, on a beautifully drawn map.
The balance between sea zones and land zones is great, and I never felt like I
could only attack ppl around me.  It was always an option to go overseas w
reasonable speed and success.

This game…

I was a replacement, and I took over for the first Congo who had
war w just about all his neighbors.  So my first goal was to curb all
those problems he created.  I offered everyone pretty much whatever they
wanted to try to avert some of the wars, and to my surprise, those negotiations
went pretty well.  I came out of the first year about as strong as anyone,
and cemented some early alliances.  Oceania was the main one.  Kyle
and I were working tightly most of the game.  Also formed peace deals with
Persia, Russia, Quebec, and Amazon.  Sahara was the least responsive of
all, so I figured that was the way to go.  Made a quick lunge into that
region, and then Sahara bailed.  In came Sean, which I must say had you
been at the helm of Sahara from the beginning, things would have been vastly
different.  Unfortunately you took over at a time when I had the leg up on
Sahara already, and so your options were limited to as we both knew, either
plotting and trying to rally ppl against me, or risking becoming a pawn to help
me.  You were right to make the stabs you did, and I really guessed lucky
on a couple 50/50’s that went my way, and that made all the difference.

My first notable move was after just a turn or two in the game,
stabbing Warren / Amazon.  I’m not sure if it was a mistake not
building an army at home, or what was going on there w the all-out naval push
north, but w nothing to try for LaPaz, I made the move.  I was able to
land an army on S.America before Amazon could build one, and that made it so
that he really couldn’t defend.  I ended up getting the lion’s
share of the centers, purely by having more units mobilized that way than Kyle,
and that set me up as a board leader with Russia who just finished off Europe.

So I knew avoiding war w Russia was critical.  If we
engaged across the Med, it would tie up a lot of our units while not being able
to advance very far.  Europe was first out, and this taught me the rule
about taking over your enemy’s home centers, which I didn’t know
about!  This was a big thing to learn, seeing as SA was just about out too,
followed shortly by Sahara.  Converting these forward build points was
really a key part of the game, and another aspect of it that I really like.

Eventually the game came down to a few big powers… myself,
Russia, Quebec and Oceania… and Persia balanced precariously between them
all.  I was hoping that ppl would not ally against me, so I kept my allies
close and tried to push on as long as possible, encouraging wars against Persia
and Russia (who I never really intended to attack).  Then I made what I
thought was the deciding move for me, stabbing Oceania.  Basically he was
growing pretty big, and tho not as big as me, he was bringing a lot of fleets
to bear on the Indian Ocean against Persia… and if we took Persia down,
those fleets would become orphaned there w nobody to attack.  They might
have eventually stabbed me, or might not, but for sure I’d not be able to
ever invade Oceania if he took down Persia.  So I worked to prop up Persia
just long enough to slip in a good Ocean stab, and that set me up with some
great position in the Pacific.  I needed a good 4-5 centers that I couldn’t
seem to find, and digging them out of Oceania worked well.

The last couple of course came from dropping into some allied centers
that I couldn’t possibly hold if the game were to go on, like Miami and
Rome, but if I got the 25 it was over so that didn’t matter.  I got
enough, and so it’s done.  Yeah it was largely cuz ppl weren’t
watching the magic number cuz if they were I’m sure Joe and Jim would
have called off their war against each other in plenty of time to stop
me.  I even didn’t know the number, until the last couple years when
I decided I was getting pretty close to being a board topper, and I should go
see what it would take to win.  I was surprised when I saw I only needed
to pick up a handful to pull it off, and hoped nobody else was aware of this.

Great game all!
-mike

DC287 Worldwide variant EOG Russia - chaosonejoe   (Aug 18, 2010, 11:51 am)

Congrats, Michael. I threw in the towel, but the End was already done.

World Dip was interesting, and the 28 Supplies was rather abrupt, but this game was dragging at this point, so I welcome the resolution.

Obviously no one was watching the victory line, because while Quebec shouted at me that I was basically handing over the game to Congo with our ill-conceived war, there was not talk of the 28.

It was an interesting open for me, since my early parlays with Europe suggested a sound alliance, but then he did what I thought was unthinkable, and went all fleets, and I just couldn't resist the early stab since there would be no way for him to defend. An early agreement with Quebec ceded control of London for a loose arrangement and no fear from the west.

I initially sided with China as he was beset on other sides, and I figured Persia was a country I could not withstand if he grew. Attempts to work with Persia were fruitless.

Sahara was engaged as a natural ally, but that fell through.

After ongoing pleading to Persia to not tie up units in the center, he of course tied up units in the center. I had no choice to pound away, and gave him several outs and several arrangements to work out a mutual position. All the while, Congo grew without pressure from his northern neighbors.

The new China was failing, but I wanted a prop between myself and Oceania, and supported him.

A new Sahara seemed to change some dynamics, but the unappealing nature of diplomacy between the new Sahara, engaging a three-way with pleading and demands that brought in Quebec soured me. Instead of propping up Sahara, I schemed with Congo to divide and conquer.

Sahara/Quebec relationships strained the loose agreement in the North Atlantic. Talk of landing troops in Europe killed the Non-agression pact assumed between the two of us. Unfortunately, it tied up my units, prevented me from expanding, and the slow gains against Persia also doomed my chase to victory.

I tried to assist Mexico, but obviously it was futile to run a race against a Country (Congo) that had twice as many centers.

In hindsight, I should have been part of an anti-Congo alliance, but as was noted, there simply was no direct means of attacking Congo, and by apparent arrangements with Persia and Oceania, there was no direct threat to Congo hegemony in the Southern Hemisphere.

Well played.

Joe Babinsack

DC287 Worldwide variant EOG - Sean2010   (Aug 18, 2010, 10:23 am)
Thank you, Michael Penner for GMing this one.

Congradulations to Michael Sims for his solo.

As many of you remember, I came into DC287 to replace Sahara.

As the new Sahara, the first issues I saw was Russia advancing through Europe, Quebecan-Mexican War, Oceania advancing into China, and Congo advancing on Amazon and appeared to have recently stabbed my predecessor.

I originally attempted to arrange an alliance with Europe to attempt stemming the Russian tide while I dually attempt to seek peace with Congo and form an anti-Congoian coalition with Oceania, Persia, and Amazon. With Persia's appearance of defensiblility, I felt that Persia would be willing to defend while using Congo as a building platform to form an offensive force to use at his discretion.

1. Europe and I were unable to form an alliance, so I opted to approach Russia instead.

2. My method to dually approach Congo for peace and test his willingness had failed. In fact, the entire exercise proved to counter productive for either Saharan survival or any chance I had at bringing Sahara back into the game.

3. Although Persia, Amazon, and I had managed to form a coalition against Congo, it was incredibly short-lived.

After it became obvious Persia, Amazon, and I weren't going to be able to stem the tide on Congo, which my aid to Russian expansion into Europe likely didn't help matters with my relations with Persia, it became clear I'd have to divert Congo to survive.

I suspect Congo sensed this, and he used it to advance his expansion into a position where he could better dictate terms with maximum consequence. It was definitely the right move since I continued to seek a backup strategy of forming a counter alliance to push Congo back, but those attempts failed utterly. My last ditch effort towards countering Congo included convoying a Russia army into Tri while attempting to get Quebec to bottle the Atlantic but neither worked. Due to this, I believe my suspicion Congo placed me right where he wanted me.

At the same time, I've resigned myself to attempting to using my units to best aid Congo while attempting to survive. The strategy seemed to be paying off, but I believe Congo saw what I saw. Congo could potentially solo this one by eliminating Sahara and moving on Persia/Oceania or both.

Russia struck me as Congo's principle rival in this one, and Congo's determined strategy prevented direct Congoian-Russian conflict.

Well done and Congradulations Michael Sims on your solo.

Good game all.

from Sean

DC287 - Autumn 2006 - Viper   (Jul 11, 2010, 10:06 pm)
Alrighty, then.  We have our retreats and we're ready to move on to the winter, except that I'm off to camp for a week and will actually have absolutely no internet access.  I won't even have electricity.  So I won't be responding to your emails at all.  As such there is no point in having a deadline until I come back.

Russia:
F Arctic Ocean - Baffin Bay

Sahara:
F Casablanca - OTB

Congo: 20 sc's - 16 units = 4 builds
Persia: 7 sc's - 7 units = even
China: 2 sc's - 2 units = even

Hello Michael P,

Since I am unable to retreat into a supply center, I figure; there's no reason to leave the illusion of Saharan units being around longer than until after the winter.

Disband F Cas.

Thank you all for the interesting game, see you all again in the EOG statements.

Enjoy your venture, Michael P.

Well, I'm still short a set of orders, but the time has come... so here's the adjudication.  There's a lot going on here, but we only have three retreats to resolve.  Well, two, really... 'cause Sahara will be bowing out regardless of his retreat.  We say farewell to another of our valient fighters just as we're about to take a bit of a break.  I will be away from most of civilization for a week starting on Monday, so get those retreats in and we'll have a long winter.

Error alert!

In my holiday haze, I somehow thought that the Norwegian Sea and the Labrador Sea were the same thing.  That is probably due to older versions of the map where the Norwegian Sea did go all the way across.  As a result, there was a bounce recorded that shouldn't have happened.  F Atlantic - Labrador and F Oslo - Norwegian are actually both successful.  The changes are below with a new map.  Of course, this means I need one fewer retreat from Quebec.
