Andy

You've taken the first step! We have a good mixture of new and old players here so dont fret too much.

The first thing to do is to click on the OPEN GAMES link on the www.diplomaticcorp.com site and pick the game you want to play - the click sign up.

If you have any more questions, post here or drop an email to me at stevelytton(at)hotmail.com

Steve.

To Heir is Human: s01 results! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
I’m sure you’ve been checkin your mail every 10 min since 2… but holidays and all ya know… Smile Happy Thanksgiving to all, and here’s some results for ya…

Great start! Can’t wait to see what happens next… Actually been a long time since I’ve seen France & Germany bounce in Burgundy. And what’s that in the Black Sea?

Next deadline: Fall ’01, Friday 11/30, 2pm Pacific.

If all 7 send in orders marked “final” I’ll adjudicate early… keep that in mind as you go, if you want to speed things along. Otherwise know I’ll never adjudicate early, deadlines will always be 1 week apart, and definitely encourage prelims from all, you can always change them up to the deadline.

Enjoy!

Points - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
How are points awarded at the end of a game. For instance is it better to be part of a 5 way draw or to be second in a solo win???

Diplomaticcorp - Latest Variant Games Up For Actio... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Jim Morrison once said "... real poetry doesn't say anything; it just ticks off the possibilities. Opens all doors. You can walk through anyone that suits you." With that in mind, we here is the amazingly poetic selection of games currently recruiting for players at DC:

re005 - Hugh Polley's Engineer Variant. This groovey little game is set on a standard map but includes the possibility of building engineers to tinker with and enhance your power's forces. Unlike the real world though, these engineers manage to do the work without the chaos or confusion - or giant mounds of paperwork. =)

re004 - Our fearless Deathblade Penguin once again steps into the frey, running a Deluge game. Set on a standard map, each turn another province (or provinces) falls under the rising ocean waters and disappears from the board. This one's a real scramble for high ground...

re003 - A game of the Youngstown variant - run by The Gentleman, Alex Schmidt. Tried, tested and true - this game has always been a crowd favorite.

re002 - Fall Of The American Empire - helmed by some fishy character. One of the few variants out there set on the North American map. Gives you the chance to show those Canadian hosers where to stick their hockey pucks.. =P

re001 - As always, this one is a vanilla dip standard game. GM to be determined. We have four players in already and just need three more for this puppy to launch.

With those choices, there's a lot of bang for your DC buck. Hope to see you on the boards!!

Merits vs. Player Rankings - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
At DC there's now two different points system.

[u:28a974a09a]Player Ratings[/u:28a974a09a] - This rates how well you do in the games that you play. Your rating goes up the most if you solo, less if you are part of a draw and the least amount if you eke out a survival.

If someone solos then all other players lose. The loss points are distributed among them. Therefore, it is much better to be part of a draw than to be second place when someone solos. (IMHO there actually IS no second place if someone solos - but that is only an opinion.)

[u:28a974a09a]Charter Of The Companion Merits [/u:28a974a09a]- This is a gauge of how active you are in the club. You get 10 Merits for every game GM'd, and from 5 - 8 Merits for every game played to the end.

With the Merits, the only difference between soloing and drawing is that you get 8 Merits for a solo win and 6 Merits for being included in the draw. However, even if you are eliminated, you get 5 Merits provided that you played the position to the bitter end.

Hope that makes sense at all. Just let us know if it doesn't.

It is much better to be part of a 5-way draw than second to a solo win, cuz second to a solo win is a loss! Drawing is much better than losing... a 5-way draw would earn around 2-3 points (not much) but 2nd to a solo win would probly net you a small loss instead.

In the list of 'variants' some seem to be broken links. Also, all links seem to be adding a \ instead of a / to the link address. This is causing some of the problems, but isn't (for example) the problem with a variant rules for Deluge - which are unviewable.

I think Trout's looking for a plainly posted deadline on the game's page, a-la...
-=> FALL 1903 DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 29, 1800 GTM <=-
kind-a thing.

Maybe a banner line the GM can post to that will be bold and a little larger that sits right over, or under the map image?

Hiya!

Diplomaticcorp.com actually uses email for communication between players rather than a forum, and then after each turn the results are displayed on a graphical map for that game.

If you'd like to join a new game (this one has been running for a couple of weeks or so already), you can go to the front page of the site, and click on the "Open Games" link at the top.

Game re001 (always second from the top) will always be a "basic" game, or if you have some experience and want to try one of the variants, there are usually several of those to choose from as well.

FOG info - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
So what do ppl think. Thus far w the FOW3’s my first impression is to try FOW4 starting gunboat and only negotiate w who you discover. But some have mentioned an aversion to such…

The concept of gunboat diplomacy is you can see all the units but you can’t diplome. In fog, you can’t see your enemies, but you can diplome. So to deprive one of both vision and diplomacy… well what have you got left but some random chance orders? It’s not Diplomacy at that point.

I think I’m leaning back toward having fow4 when it launches, be open diplomacy… Otherwise what’s the point of an 18-player game, if you can only ever negotiate w your 3 or 4 adjacent neighbors that you meet? There has to be some mechanism to encounter other players, so that you can negotiate w ppl a few nations away… For example we all know that although E/T are rarely adjacent, they always have plenty to discuss in the standard game.

Well..first of all, I'm a fan. Its add a very challenging wrinkle to hide the map. I like the idea that you don't know who is who, until you meet them...but can also see you point.

How about THIS for a mechanism. You have to go out and meet you neighbors (sure, some chance involved here--like Age of Empires). Only when you are Adjacent to their unit to you or them have the OPTION of exchanging email address. Then, once your neighbor knows who you are...he/she is free to pass on that info.

I really think this will work. You can horde up all your intel..or chose to barter it out for more intell like people do with maps now. There could even be quite a lot of creative misdirection....

You could call it Fog of War: Caveman Era. Only communications with those you meet....
