Hi Guys,

I have a mix of orders and votes, but not a complete set of either.  Deadline is in about 4 hours.

Cheers,

First, thanks to Chris for GMing this game, it's a lot of work and even though I was only a late replacement, he consistently performs better than your average GM.
And also kudos to Nathan and Jess, and I hope you all play more!

I should apologize to France for bungling the elimination of England.  I blame it on not playing a German invasion of England.  Usually it's the other way around!  Nathan's invasion of Scandinavia was well timed.  I thought I could sneak my fleet to help crush England and -- oops!

Congratulations to Italy and Austria -- you two really played well.  I had a solid lien to defend the stalemate, but I was looking for something more exciting.  And I got my rear end handed to me by a clever and resourceful player!  Humbling!

Well, I can't comment since I just tried to keep my
position, but your good play and my mistakes took a solid position into dust.  I voted for the draw since I knew I couldn't win once Italy broke through France and Austrian armies were camped outside my cities.

Thanks for letting me play!

Paul

First, a big thanks to Chris for keeping on top of this game for well over half a year. A great example of consistent and thorough GMing.

Jeff gets a lot of credit for standing by what had to be the Diplomacy equivalent of a trip to the DMV, playing out the grindingly slow fate of Turkey after so many glimmers of hope. Jess deserves no less praise for taking over a lost cause and defending the British Isles with a pair of armies – exciting work!

I owe my being in the draw to Sun's tenacious tactics in the center and unwavering dedication to the alliance. I spent years and years sparring with France and Turkey and owed a lot of my very haphazard and modest success in the west to luck (some convenient NMRs, though at least one bad one) and a messy situation in France that let me get some fleets behind the lines to hinder development long enough to give us a shot. Stopping the German invasion of England in 1913-14 was especially fun.

When Austria took Venice (to protect it from marauding Cossacks, of course!) in Fall 1904 I expected to play out the string of an ignominious collapse. Looking at the map tonight, it's easy to see all the positives of Austria's keeping me around: Turkey and Russia were still viable, Germany was bearing down on him, and I was keeping the French southern forces occupied with Spanish shell games. But I think my analysis in July was simpler: hope for the best!

I agonized over whether building A ROM in 1911 would put Austria on the defensive. At that point Germany and Russia were encircling him. To my shame I made a few confused moves with that army (not recognizing Austria's move out of PIE as a friendly changing of the guard, for example). In the end I think getting that army all the way to Turkey helped preserve the draw by balancing the east a bit more, to discourage too easy of a stab, but I wonder what would've been possible had that army been in Piedmont as I strongly suspect Sun intended.

Austria taking Venice in a friendly way was an interesting element. I'd add to Chris's list that the extra SC let Austria build another critically important army at a time when Sun's fights with Germany, Russia and Turkey required a lot of armies. One less army and one front would've collapsed for sure, especially the east where things were one bad guess away from disaster for a spell.

In Fleet Rome the specialization of Italy into fleets and Austria into armies is a little easier to take for granted from the start. If I'd had the extra army in Italy I would've been in a better position to defend Venice and the Austrian occupation might never have happened. A second army also may have given me the resources to stab Austria in hopes of linking up with Russia or Germany, though the way this game went I don't think that would've been wise in any event. F ROM went east in this game.

All the best,
Alex

Hey Gumballers,

The blessed day has come!  After 35 weeks of battle, peace has broken out in Europe!  By unanimous agreement of all surviving parties, I hereby declare this game to have ended in a 2-way draw.

Congratulations to our co-winners, Sun Chung (Austria) and Alex Bennett (Italy)!

Sun and Alex richly deserve the prize.  I can honestly say I have never seen a gunboat alliance hold up for 17-and-a-half years.  Heck, I've never seen a gunboat game last 17-and-a-half years, period.

Kudos, as well, to all the survivors, along with my thanks for playing
hard and sticking it out to the end.  We had our troubles along the way,
didn't we?  Seems not everyone possesses sufficient mettle for a
marathon game such as this.  Before I proceed with my comments, here is your game roster.

Austria      Sun Chung       1901-1918  Draw
England (1)  Brian Lam       1901-1909  Abandon (3 NMRs)
England (2)  Jess Morse      1910-1918  Survival
France
Scott
Hickey    1910-1918  Survival
Germany (1)  Marc Peters     1901-1914  Abandon (3 NMRs)
Germany (2)  Paul Russell    1915-1918  Survival
Italy        Alex Bennett    1901-1918  Draw
Russia       Nathan Merritt  1901-1918  Survival
Turkey       Jeffrey Clay    1901-1915  Eliminated

Special thanks to Jess and Paul, who stepped in to save the game when the original players dropped out.  Jess is my daughter, and this was her first try at on-line Diplomacy.  Baby steps, right?  She was quite happy that the draw passed this turn.  France and Germany had submitted moves that
would have eliminated her.

Paul is an old friend and fellow dipper from way, way back.  He introduced me to the game 30 years ago and, in fact, I still have the board and wooden pieces he gifted me with when he moved away.

(And just in case you're wondering, no, neither of them knew that the other was playing.  I run a respectable game.)

Nathan was also a DC newbie.  I think Russia had perhaps the most up and down game, but it was a fun one to watch.  Hiding out in Scandinavia was a pretty clever move at the end, too.  If you'd stayed home to fight, I think an elimination was a certainty.

Special congrats also go out to our Sultan, Jeff Clay, who stuck with his position for years on 1 dot until he was finally eliminated -- our one and only! -- in 1915.  Somehow I think that the arrival of a new daughter at Jeff's house during the game more than made up for the pain of losing.

GM's End
of Game Comments

Those of you who were here from the beginning may have a hard time remembering, but this game was started as a Fleet Rome variant, meaning that Italy started with a fleet in
Rome instead of an army.  The whole point of this arrangement is to make it easier for Austria and Italy to cooperate.  I guess that worked as advertised, didn't it!

My gunboat experience is reasonably extensive, and what that experience has taught me is that Austria typically does not last long.  Even worse than in regular Dip, where it is hard enough to survive playing the red.  No matter which direction the easterners start off, after a couple of years, when the neutrals have been snagged and there is a big logjam in the Balkans, it seems that inevitably R/T/I become frustrated and,  unable to communicate, take the easy way out and carve up Austria.  On those occasions where Austria and Italy do seem to cooperate at the beginning, as soon as one or the other gets a couple of builds, the stab soon follows.

I thought we might have the same thing here, when Austria "accidentally" took Venice early on.  In
theory,  he was protecting it from Russian aggression (ah, the mad Russian and his army in Piedmont... remember that?) but once he was there, I was
surprised that (a) he never left and (b) he never went any further and (c) Italy never tried to reclaim it.  As it turned out, it seemed that turning over Venice to Austria, worked to solidify the A/I alliance in a number of ways:

1. It gave Austria a place to park his fleet.  He would never build another.
2. It eliminated the possibility of the quick stab from Italy.
3. It allowed Italy to focus 100% on the Med, since he didn't need to hang back to protect Venice or Rome.

Of course, none of that was inevitable in the beginning.  How much of this was influenced by the Fleet Rome starting position as opposed to just having two players who were willing and able to pull of the game-long alliance?  I'd welcome your comments on this question.

As solid as the A/I alliance was, it certainly didn't look like a world beater from the beginning.  Germany, in particular, had multiple chances to seize the reins,
but a combination of oddly cautious play and untimely NMR's, he consistently shot himself in the foot.  England likewise started strong only to be done in by NMR's even more than the Russians.

My overall impression of this game, especially in the early to middle years, was that it was very conservatively played.  Beside Germany, I thought France and Austria also had their chances to bust out and make a solo bid, but it never happened.  I'm not going to go back and compile statistics, but I have distinct memories of a couple of turns where multiple players just sat tight and supported themselves from imagined attacks that never occurred.  Hey, easy for me to talk, isn't it?  Smile

I've attached the final Realpolitik file for your perusal.  The final map you already have from last turn.

End of game statements from players are welcome.  You now have everyone's address, and you should also copy the game
forum as I've done.

Thanks very much to everyone for playing.  Good luck in the Blitz, if you're playing, and whatever future Diplomatic adventures you may embark upon.  It has been my pleasure to GM for you, and I hope you enjoyed the experience and will come back for more.

Cheers,
Chris

(DC 326) Gumball - Spring 1918 Retreats - Corrino   (Jan 06, 2011, 8:00 pm)
Hi Players,

French F Mid-Atlantic Ocean retreats to Irish Sea.  Map attached.

END OF GAME PROPOSALS:

1.  2-way draw with Austria and Italy
2.  Draw including all survivors (DIAS)

NEXT DEADLINE:  Fall 1918 orders are due Wednesday, January 12, at 8:00 p.m. EST.  Please include your EGP votes with your orders.

By the way, remember a couple of weeks ago when I was lobbying for shorter game turns?  Well, now I'm no longer thinking it's such a good idea.  The Winter Blitz has started, in which I'm GM'ing and some of you are playing.  As it happens, Wednesday is the only weekday that there isn't an adjudication to be done for the Blitz.  That makes me think that leaving our game turns to fall on Wednesday is a good
idea.

Cheers,
Chris

(DC 326) Gumball - Spring 1918 Results - Corrino   (Jan 05, 2011, 9:21 pm)
Hi Players,

It's Spring 1918.  The Great War is winding down "Over There".  Back home in Boston, the Red Sox are beginning another championship season.  Led by their star southpaw, George Herman Ruth, this team will soon bring yet another World Series title to Beantown.  The national press speaks of a "dynasty" and the home town fans take every opportunity to lord it over their poor cousins in New York.  Hop the trolley to Kenmore Square, one block south to Lansdowne Street and into the jewel of the Fenway.  Play ball!

Meanwhile, in our own little slice of alternate reality, the war in Europe is still going hot and heavy.  Austria and Italy push hard against France and Germany.  The A-I duo already control half the continent between
them.  Nonetheless, a proposal to concede the war to them has failed, with three votes FOR and three votes AGAINST (or ABSTAINING).

Highlights of the season are slim, unless you're wearing the red or the green:

. Austria pushes forward on the German front and has the Kaiser's armies at a clear disadvantage going into the Fall.

. In Scandinavia, the Russian court in-exile holds fast, thanks to the support of the Austrian forces now occupying St. Pete.

. Italian forces walk into the undefended French capital while also taking control of the Mid-Atlantic Ocean.

RETREATS:  French fleet Mid-Atlantic Ocean can retreat to North Atlantic Ocean or Irish Sea or Brest or Gascony or OTB.  Retreat is due by 8:00 p.m. EST tomorrow, Thursday, January 6.

Cheers,
Chris

(DC 326) Gumball - Fall 1917 results - Corrino   (Dec 30, 2010, 8:56 am)
Hi Players,

Hope you're enjoying this last week of 2010.  I know it hasn't been the best week for everyone, but here's wishing all of you a healthy and happy new year in 2011.

As you'll recall, we had three end-of-game proposals on the table:

1.  France/Germany/Austria
2.  France/Germany/Austria/Italy
3.  Austria/Italy

None of the proposals passed, though ALL of them had a majority in favor.  I'm not going to break it down further than that, except to say that every player did submit votes.  There were no abstentions.  You may submit new proposals (or resubmit a previous one) at any time.  Now on to the results for Fall 1917.

Headline:  "Austria-Hungary Rolls over Russia
as Kaiser's Scandinavian Buns are Buttered by Fleeing White Army"

In other words:

. Austria captures both Moscow and St. Pete, as the Tsar chooses to abandon the last defense of his homeland.  A difficult choice, I'm sure, but St. Pete would have fallen next year anyway if he had chosen to defend it this year at the cost of one of his remaining armies.

. Germany pays the price for not making amends for earlier transgressions on the Eastern front.  It looks like he was counting on goodwill that simply does not exist.  Now he must decide whether to shift forces away from England in order to recapture Scandinavia.  And what about his armies in the East and in Piedmont?  Somewhere, somehow, two German units need to be disbanded.  Which will go and which will stay?

. Fortunately for Germany's friend, France, the (soon-to-be-gone?) army in Piedmont did prove to be the key in his recapture of
Marseilles.  Sunbathers up and down the coast look up from their novels and order another glass of Beaujolais.

. Observers on both sides of the Atlantic (and on the moon, too, for that matter) are wondering why Italy chose to use his fleet in Western Med to signal the Germans in Norwegian Sea, rather than cut the French support from Spain.  Crazy, or genius?  It seems that in losing Marseilles the wily Italians have gained Burgundy.  Now THERE is a nightmare for France and Germany.

. And we can't leave without remarking that the plucky British forces are still sitting pretty at home, having successfully blocked yet another attempt to take away Edinburgh.  I think it is safe to say that no one is enjoying the current German and French predicaments more than they.

RETREATS:
. Italian army Marseilles has been auto-retreated to Burgundy.  Let me know if you want to remove the unit instead,
Monseignor.
. Austrian army Silesia has been dislodged and may retreat to Prussia, Warsaw or OTB.

ADJUSTMENTS:  Austria builds 2 new units.  Germany must remove 2.

DEADLINES:  Since only two players are involved in the Winter season, I'd like to do both retreats and adjustments together.  This assumes, of course, that the Kaiser can make his choices without knowing the Austrian retreats.  Let me know, Herr Kaiser.

Officially:  The Austrian retreat is due ASAP, and Winter adjustments are due within 24 hours after I post the Austria retreat.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Players,

Feliz Navidad, Joyeux Noel, Kurisumasu Omedetoo Gozaimasu, and Merry Christmas!

Before we get to the results, I have wondrous news that I'm heralding far and wide this Christmas Eve Eve Eve.  I'm done with my wrapping!  It's a true Christmas miracle!  Usually I'm still wrapping when Santa is coming down the chimney.  But this year, it was early to shop (Amazon, I love you!), early to wrap, and now I'm just cruisin' into the holiday.  No last minute shopping.  Nothing to put together.  Man, it's all egg nog and cookies for me now!

And who will have a Happy Holiday season in Gumball Land?  Let's see:

. The Archduke has just accomplished what Napoleon
never could.  They're now singing Edelweiss in Moscow.  (Well, maybe not, but they're definitely looking oh-so wholesomely cheerful.)

. The Russians, no dummies they, quit the capital just before the Austrians arrived.  Forget this!  Let's enjoy beach season in the Gulf of Bothnia.  Mmmm, baby.  Refreshing!

. Germany (east) runs towards/away from Austria.  Berlin is safe, and the rubber tanks rebound from Galicia.

. Germany (northwest) reestablishes their very threatening posture towards Scotland, but they had better watch their backs now that the Russians are in Scandinavia.

. Germany (low countries) sits there.  Again.  I think those guys are too drunk to move.

. England keeps hold of Scotland for one more season, and keeps her hopes up thanks to the rambunctious Russians.  Still a tough spot, but who knows what will happen with F/G trying to coordinate.  We've
seen that less-than-efficient pairing before,  haven't we?

. France takes Wales (Yea, victory!) but then has to wonder whether leaving London empty was a good idea.

. Things are looking a little dicier in bouillabaisse territory, as the French army in Marseilles is unceremoniously booted out by the eager Italian forces from Piedmont.  This could be tres important, n'est pas, but all is not lost.  Could that new black army in Piedmont be the white knight come to save the day?

Tune in again next week, folks, when we'll learn the answer to that question and many more. Here... on your 24-hour Gumball Gunboat Diplomacy Channel!

RETREATS:  English army Wales only has one retreat -- to Yorkshire.  If the king would rather disband the army, he has only to tell me so and it will happen.  France, on the other hand, has a choice.  A Marseilles may retreat to Burgundy, Gascony or OTB.
Pick one and let me know, Monsieur.

NEXT DEADLINE:  The French retreat is due ASAP.  If I don't get it by 8:00 p.m. tomorrow, the army comes off the board!  After that, it seems that everyone was okay with our usual Wednesday deadline.  That means Fall 1917 is due Wednesday, December 29, at 8:00 p.m. EST.

I'll be on vacation next week, hanging around the house, so if everyone gets in early I'll adjudicate early.  Remember, you don't HAVE to wait until the day before.  A couple of you in particular don't have all that much thinking to do (no offense).

(DC 326) Gumball - Spring 1917 Results - Corrino   (Dec 22, 2010, 9:02 pm)

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

(DC 326) Gumball - Winter 1916 Results - Corrino   (Dec 18, 2010, 5:14 pm)
Hi Players,

Sorry this is coming out a little later than I expected.  Christmas concert at school last night, and my "baby" girl is having her 15th birthday party upstairs as I write this.  You can appreciate that I had a few other things on my mind the last couple of days.

Anyway, here I am repeating the adjustments I sent out Thursday night, and this time they come with a map.  Oh, boy!

Austria:
Build A Trieste

Germany:
Build A Munich

The feedback I've gotten so far seems to say that there won't be a problem having our usual turn during the Christmas-New Year's week.  I've also gotten mostly positive response on speeding things up a little AFTER the holidays.  I know some of you are going to be playing in the Blitz.
Shouldn't we try to get this one over with?

NEXT DEADLINE:  Spring 1917 is due Wednesday, December 22, at 8:00 p.m. EST.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Players,

I have the builds from Austria and Germany, but I forgot that I'm going out tonight and won't be able to do the Realpolitik work and post the official results to the game page on the web site.

BUT... that's no reason not to tell you what's going on.  I'll catch up with the map and such tomorrow night or Saturday morning.

Austria:    Build A Trieste

Germany:    Build A Munich

Do remember that I'm waiting to hear from you what you think of playing in the Christmas/New Years week, and whether you would be interested in speeding up the deadlines.

Cheers,

Chris

(DC 326) Gumball - Fall 1916 Results - Corrino   (Dec 15, 2010, 9:09 pm)
Welcome, Players!

Welcome back to The Gumball Lounge for our weekly Wednesday rendezvous!  It's good to see you all in your places once again, ready for a little good cheer and confrontation.  As 1916 draws to a close, it looks as though we can score this as another Hapsburg triumph.  To wit:

. Having destroyed the Russian army in Sevastopol last Spring, the mighty red army does the same to the Germans in Warsaw this turn.  Add those two moves together and Austria gains one SC, giving us a three-way tie at the top of the standings.

. Is our new Kaiser starting to realize that nothing comes easy in Gumball?  Attacks on Austria, Russia and England are all unsuccessful,
not that any of them were supported.  One wonders if he is really treating this campaign with the proper degree of... seriousness.

. If you haven't already, check out the crazy border between our two central powers.  Remember just a few turns ago when it looked like we had a nice stable stalemate line forming?  Hurrah for chaos!

. Russia tries to sit tight and support himself, only to find both supports cut.  But no matter, no one bothered to attack in force... this time... so he's solid on two SC for this year.

. Italy and France perform their usual headbutt ballet, but with even more complex choreography than usual.  Bangity-bang-bang go the big ship's guns, but in the end, the move that matters might be that little green army slipping into Piedmont.

. England saves Edinburgh and stays on 2 SC.  The race with Russia for 5th place is still going hot and heavy!

. And lastly, more amusing
shenanigans from the German army in Belgium.  Wonder if we'll see any more of that in the future, now that there are Austrians knocking on the door of Berlin and Munich.  Nero fiddled.  Kaiser cavorts?

Side note:  I'm all in favor of lightening the mood.  This isn't exactly life or death now, is it?  However, we do have some basic rules.  You can submit a silly order, but it has to be for a REAL unit.  I can't publish orders for units that aren't yours or that don't exist.  Sorry.  Think about it for a minute, and you'll see why.  Communication is supposed to be difficult in gunboat.  If you're willing to forgo moving a real unit for a turn to communicate, that's fine, but there are no freebies.

RETREATS:  None.  German army Warsaw is disbanded.

ADJUSTMENTS:  Germany didn't lose
any owned dots, so he gets to rebuild a unit at home.  Austria is plus one thanks to Sevastopol.  Russia is down one, but the unit already went "Poof!" so he has no adjustments to make.  See below for full EOY status.

DEADLINE:  Winter adjustments are due Friday, December 17, at 8:00 p.m. EST.  If I get them tomorrow, I will post the results Thursday night.

LOOKING AHEAD:  I'm not going anywhere over the holidays, but perhaps some of you are?  I'd like to get in the turn before Christmas, even if we have to move it up a little.  Let me know what you want to do for the turn between Christmas and New Years.  Keep it or skip that week?

LOOKING FURTHER AHEAD:  Any interest in speeding things up a little bit?  We can go to two turns a week, or variable deadlines every 3-4 days.  What do you think?

Cheers,
Chris

Hey, hey, Gumballers!

You know when you see that greeting that the GM is excited.  And what excites your GM?  Action... destruction... pain and misery on a continent-wide scale!  Leg-pullers and head-scratchers!  We've got it all this round, folks.  Check it out!  We've got

1.  Convoys -- That's a big 10-4.  France lands an army in Angleterre.
2.  Disbandments -- The Russian army in Sevastopol goes "Poof!"
3.  Double Dislodgements -- Germans push the Austrians out of Warsaw and Tyrolia... which leads to
4.  Fall Backs -- Two Austrian armies looking for new lodging.

5.  Glowering Gauls -- The Italians and French are still staring at each other in Iberia.
6.  A Smattering of Silliness -- Don't miss the Belgian orders.
7.  Roman Legions on the March -- Here comes the Italian army.
8.  Dead Ends in the Desert (?) -- Army Armenia alliterates almost all alone.
9.  Summer Sailing -- Where are the German fleets going?
10.  Exciting Elections -- The AFI challenger was going strong for a while, but ran out of gas in the end.  4 YEA, 1 NAY, 1 Abstention.
11.  Odd Endings -- Because 11 is one more than 10.  (Smell the Glove!  Spinal Tap rules!)

RETREATS:  Austria (x2).  A Warsaw is auto-retreated to Livonia.  This may be changed to OTB if desired.  A Tyrolia has his choice of Vienna or Trieste or Piedmont or OTB.  Please submit retreat orders by 8:00 p.m. tomorrow,
EST.

Cheers,
Chris

Good morning, all.

Italy builds a new army in Rome.

NEXT DEADLINE:  Spring 1916 is due Wednesday, December 8, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern US time.  Remember that we also have a end-of-game proposal on the table for an AFI draw.

(DC 326) Gumball - Fall 1915 Results - Corrino   (Dec 03, 2010, 9:35 pm)
Day is done, gone the sun,

From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;

All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

And so, after 15 years, we bid adieu to our very first eliminated player.  Ankara falls to Italy and the Sultan is left homeless.  Many thanks to our noble emir.  You don't know him (yet) but I will say that I very much appreciated his consistent good humor, even in the face of the unshakable A/I onslaught that was his downfall.

What else happened in Europe this year?  Not much, actually.  There was a vote, if you'll recall, on a draw for Austria, France and Germany.  It didn't succeed.  Final vote count was 3 YEA, 1 NAY, and two abstentions, which are equivalent to NAYS.  We have a couple of new proposals, which we will get to shortly.

Meanwhile, our modest highlights:

. Our new Kaiser is still warming up, apparently.  Embarrassed by my glowing
introduction, he betrayed opening jitters by attempting to jump his fleet from NAO to Edinburgh.  Sorry, mein Herr.  It's one space at a time in this game.

. France and Italy switch roles, kinda sorta.  This time it was the Frenchman's turn to attack.  Don't worry, though, the end result was the same, and our stand-off in the Western Med region remains intact.

. In the east, Austria, Germany and Russia play defense.  Successfully.

And that's that.

RETREATS:  None.

END OF GAME PROPOSALS:  Two of them.

1.  Turkish solo!  Okay, this one represents a last favor to our departing Sultan.  You can smile and proceed to option 2.
2.  AFI draw.  No, that's not the American Film Institute.  Rather, a proposal that Austria, France and Italy should be awarded a draw.

NEXT DEADLINE:  See below for the full status
table.  The nutshell version is that Italy needs to submit a build order.  I'll take that whenever you're ready, but no later than Monday, December 6,, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern US time.

Cheers,
Chris

We have a new Kaiser and I have his orders in my mailbox.  If you've been feeling a bit drowsy in this game lately I'd advise you to wake up fast.  This guy is a shark!  Smile

Adjudication in about 12 hours.  Revisions will be accepted up until that point.

(DC 326) Gumball - Adjudication delayed - Corrino   (Dec 02, 2010, 9:29 pm)
Hi Gang,

Good news is that I have six sets of orders in hand.  Bad news is that the missing set belongs to Germany.  This is his third strike.  He's out.  Too bad, because he's a great guy when he's involved, not to mention he's played a pretty good game.  On the other hand, without the NMR's, we might be much closer to a conclusion.

I will not put the board leader into civil disorder.  That would ruin the whole game.  Accordingly, I've begun looking for a replacement.  I will recruit privately for a day or two first.  If that's not successful, I'll post the opening to the DC board.  I will allow the replacement to submit orders for Fall 1915.  No sense penalizing the person doing us a favor -- that's my
feeling.

You may change your orders or your votes up until the time I have a new set of German orders submitted.  That could be an hour or a few days.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Players,

(DC 326) Gumball - Fall 1914 Results - Corrino   (Nov 18, 2010, 9:09 pm)
Hi Gumballers,

It's a fun time in the old town tonight!  Plenty of interesting maneuvers, a gamble or two, and a mighty naval conflict with a surprisingly benign result.  Let's go straight to the highlights.

. The Black Sea has turned green.  "Look at the pretty dots I can see from here!" wired back the Italian Commodore as they cruised uncontested into the warm waters.

. On the other side of Europe, the naval action was much more heated.  The German fleet in MAO tried to make for northern waters, but was bounced back by the Italians in Clyde.  With Italy attacking that MAO fleet from the rear, I thought for a moment that he would be dislodged into the French port of Brest.  But then, at the last minute, French fleets in Portugal and
English Channel teamed up to attack MAO, too.  That made it two-against-two, a bounce!  And because of that bounce, the single German fleet is allowed to remain.  It's called a "beleaguered unit" in the rules.  You can look it up!

Meanwhile, there was plenty of action in the continent's interior, as well.

. Austrian forces outguessed the White Army and captured Warsaw, BUT
. The German forces succeeded in breaking through the Austrian lines into Galicia, BUT
. The Russians occupied St. Pete, MEANING
. A net movement of one dot from Germany to Austria.  Good thing for the Archduke.  He's going to have his hands full now that his line has been split in twain.

Finally, a tip of the old shako to the merry prankster in Berlin who swapped out the Kaiser's maps for the Western front.  We don't know his name but we recognize his work.  Why else would German units in Belgium, Munich and
Irish Sea go completely unordered, while phantom units in Burgundy and Liverpool are sent on phantom missions?  Very funny, Herr Jokemeister.  Now I think you better run and hide before the Kaiser catches up with you.

RETREATS:  Russian army Warsaw is auto-retreated to Livonia, its only legal move due to the bounce in Moscow.  However, Russia may choose to retreat off the board instead.  Should he so choose, he would then be eligible to build a new unit in Moscow during the Winter.

ADJUSTMENTS:  Austria Builds 1.  France Builds 1.  Italy Removes 1.  Russia Builds 1 only if A Warsaw is retreated OTB.  Germany is down 1 SC, but does not need to remove because of the fleet in Clyde being destroyed in the Spring.  (Full details of SC ownership can be found below.)

DEADLINE:  Adjustments are due Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. EST.  That's 35 hours from now.  If everyone
submits early, I'll post results tomorrow night.

*** NOTE:  I don't want to post separate retreat/build phases.  If it matters to you whether or not Russia chooses to disband instead of retreating, please submit conditional adjustment orders.  e.g.  If Russia retreats OTB, build F Iceland.  Else, Build A Sicily.

You guys are doing great, by the way.  This has been a very interesting game for the last 7 or 8 years.  Just when it looked like Germany was going to run away with it, you've pulled him back to the pack.  Keep up the good work!

Cheers,
Chris
