DC327 - Spring 19 adjudication - ConradW   (Mar 31, 2011, 12:13 pm)
I am really not a stabber by nature, but won't waste time trying to overcome appearances Wink

Seriously though I somehow managed to reach agreement with both Boeotia and Argos (whatever it's called) and then thought heck where do I go? Then Arcolia offers the alliance against Boeotia so ... the good Sarge was not happy, which was OK, but I didn't realize that the MVP deal was somehow contingent upon Boeotia. That leads me to think that perhaps they were planning to divvy me up in the long run anyway.

Then there is Laconia who had the arrangement with his neighbor and didn't really budge on it as he seemed singlarly focused on destroying Arcolia. That said and this relates to Mike's point about home centers there came the point when I was about to lose my last one, Athens, and Greg didn't view that as a problem, but I did. So Laconia is a persuasive guy and never stops which no doubt is a major factor in his success. Hence I cut the deal to switch sides again. That worked pretty well actually.

Finally Boeotia came back to his home and gained a center from me -- notice there was no attempt to take him out at then end. It seemed only just.

Hey everyone, good game.  Nice thing I guess about having been out of this one for so long is that the bitterness of the stabs has passed, and I can look back on it from a fairly disconnected perspective.  Others have already commented on the rise and fall of Aetolia.  More on that later.

For me, the game largely hinged on a different theater.  As Penner said in his EGS, he wanted me (Elia) to head north toward Aetolia... (I remember these talks) however my bigger threat was not going to come from Greg, rather, from the south.  Scott, with his awesome solo record was the player to beat.  So naturally I try to ally w him first and foremost.  It wasn't working tho, cuz we had this newbie named Matt in between us.  We couldn't figure out what to do among the three... the natural tendencies like for me to want Matt to go east and for Scott to want Matt to go north made us awkwardly incompatible.

This really set the game, and Scott certainly lived up to his record here by successfully campaigning, over and over, for Matt to go my way.  Just when I'd think I'd established an "ok that's water under the bridge but let's work together now so we don't end up both screwed" level with Matt, bam, he turns on me again.  And again.  And... again.  I really have to tip my hat to Scott for all this work he put into that angle of the game.  All the promises to Matt about how he wouldn't stab him, how I was the bigger threat.

Then, Scott stabbed Matt, and so lethally done there was no way to save him.  Tho I think we tried for a year, unsuccessfully.

Then the game progressed into the Aetolia years, when Greg was expanding.  Here I was badly positioned between two large powers in the east and one larger in the west.  Neither side really needed me, but I think Greg needed me more.  This was cuz Penner and Scott could stalemate Greg w/o me in the picture, but Greg couldn't advance w/o me to help him round the southern tip.  I had dreams of a 6-way draw by getting Greg to perhaps 19 of the 20 centers needed, and with me and Charles (Attica) right on the fulcrum, at which point Scott and Penner would have to work w us to stop the solo and all call it a draw.

This failed tho, when Charles gave in to Scott's (Penner's? Combined pressure?) jedi mind powers, and stabbed me.

Now back to the Aetolian regime, at one point here Greg stabbed me for a few centers, taking away my ability to build.  I think this was the beginning of the fall of Aetolia.  I'm not sure Greg knew just how firmly I was in his camp and willing to help him expand... and by sacking me, he stopped the momentum we had going and reduced me to a minimal survival role.  This cost him (us) the ability to build on the peloponnesus.  I would really liked to have seen where the game would have gone if this had not happened.  Either we got the draw that I'd set out for, or a better-timed stab by Greg might have snuck him the solo.  As it stood tho w me having to colllapse into Italy, it gave the lower left corner to the evil cronies, and then it was just a long slog of slowly retreating toward the furthest corner of the map I could find.

I'm glad the draw passed finally, and on this turn and not in a year.  Smile  So thanks for passing that!  The two victims - Matt and Greg - Matt, it's been so long since you were in the game.  Looking back you were out in year 7, and we went almost 18 years.  It's amazing that most of the meat of this game occurred around years 3-5 and then there was so much time afterwards.  And Greg, you know I'm disappointed you didn't survive.  Certainly not befitting.  But, it happens.  I barely lucked into survival myself.

Frank, a tireless effort as GM and marathon (heh) game.  Nicely done...

DC327 - Arcolia EOG - Viper   (Mar 30, 2011, 8:49 pm)
Oh man.  I've been ready to write this for a while, so here goes:

Beginning of the game:
I had the whole thing figured out... I was going to ally with Attica and Messenia against Laconia to wipe him out quickly.  Meanwhile, I was going to do my best to convince Elia and Boeotia to attack Aetolia.  Clearly it didn't go as planned.  Attica attacked Boeotia and Messenia attacked Elia and I was left almost alone against Laconia.  So, I did my best to mend that relationship and turned against Attica.

Mid-game:
I quickly realized that the only way to attack Attica effectively was a massive convoy.  But, with the too-quick growth of Aetolia, I couldn't afford to send one of my armies over there.  So, I offered the job to Boeotia.  Since he was down to his last unit, he took it.  That left me able to
defend the main peninsula as well as I could.  As Aetolia got close to the solo, conversations abounded about what it would take to get Attica on-board.  So much of the discussion was about who was the actual person letting Aetolia win, and I was pretty sure it wasn't me, since I had never worked with him once.  I don't remember the details, but I know the solution included another big convoy of Boeotia's unit back to the mainland.

Late-game:
Once the tide had turned, it was just a question of how far it would go.  I trusted Laconia (though the line at the end made me nervous) and I think he trusted me.  I was a little disappointed that Attica didn't devote himself more to the attack, but I suppose the early game gave him reason to suspect us.  I'm happy with the result (it's my best result yet) and I look forward to playing you all again.

Another bright star in my constellation of successes. Wink
Thought I was gonna have a go at a solo there for a couple of turns, but I guess it wasn't meant to be.

2011/3/2, DipCorp Master :
EGP: none of the 4 proposals made it. Once more it was a very close call.

Arcolia and Laconia probe at eachother's borders but without much luck.
Laconia is increasing its presence in the southwest while Arcolia is doing
something similar in the north.
Boeotia and Attica hold their place while Elia is on the move again.

Next is Fall 18. Deadline is Friday Mar 4 at 19:00 GMT.
Only one EGP for Fall 18: Arcolian-Laconian draw. Submit your vote with
your
Fall orders.
Any other EGP is welcome but will come up for voting with the Spring 19
orders.

NOTE: I made an error in the Winter 17 adjustments and had built the
Laconian Army in SPA instead of PRA.
When I found out about it while doing Spring 18 adjudication I corrected
the
mistake. Don't think it had any impact considering that both SPA and PRA
are
nowhere near any other powers. Was anyone even aware?
For the completeness however I have also attached the corrected W17 map
(S18.gif).

Ai ai. What a mixup.
I thanked Scott for playing but obviously that should have read Greg.
Hope this isn't a bad omen.

Autumn 17: Laconian F UTA retreats to SIC.

And that brings us to Winter 17.
Oh no. The Aetolians have lost their last 2 SCs and have gone underground. The last 2 units in EPC and UTA are destined for afterlife.

Now we all wonder whether it will be with the gods of the Olympos? Or enduring endless suffering with Hades for failing to solo?

What a sad ending for a Power that once ruled with 16 SCs and seemed to be set for a sounding victory.

Let that be a warning to those that have started to feel comfortable with a position in the lead.

Thanks for playing Scott. And for hanging on until the end.
When we've finished the game I would appreciate if you could give us your endgame comments.

EGPs: never been so close to an agreement between all remaining powers.
If it hadn't been for a last-minute vote change by 2 of them it would have ended here.
Guess it must be hard to say goodbye after such a long campaign in such good company.

Once more none of the EGPs received an Aye from all powers. So the war continues...

Fall 16: Aetolia stands it ground and seems to send a fleet south to support the Elian fleet.
But the Elian fleet is already overpowered. Will they be able to regroup elsewhere? And will Aetolia be there for support. or for the kill?

Retreat required for Elian fleet in Italus Sinus; it can retreat to Rhegium or Sicily or Elea or Cumae. Or OTB.
Deadline for retreats is Monday Jan 31 at 7pm GMT. Will try ot run it as soon as received.
