DC330: End of Game Statement from Italy - raistlin   (Dec 14, 2010, 6:22 pm)
End of Game Statement from Italy
Early game
From my first look at the board, I wanted to play the Italians, simply because I wanted very much to have a stake in the battle for Spain. Further, I felt that if I could win the battle for Spain, I would in effect have won the battle for the Mediterranean.
However, things went a little differently than I hoped.
My strategic decision was to attack France at the outset, with the hope that my decisive action would bring my allies, and specifically the alliance of Germany. This was nothing against Nick???it was just that on examination of the board it seemed that France was the best target from a tactical perspective. And my tactical position increasingly dictated by strategic decision making. Was that good or bad? I am not sure, but, given that I ended up on 13 centres, it worked out pretty well for me.
While my initial attack on France failed, with Nick defending hard and me unable to gain the diplomacy points that I needed for success in Spain or North Africa, my diplomacy and my actions gave me two neutral partners at the very least, Turkey and Poland. And I got a build in the Balkans. Britain also did not seem overly hostile. However, without Germany as an ally, I was feeling vulnerable.
However, I continued my attack on France. Foolishly, I also continued with my attempt to take Spain. In hindsight, I should have done a lot earlier what I did later: sacrifice the Nationalists for an ally in the Republicans. If I had done that, I think that France would have fallen much earlier and other opportunities would have opened up for me.
Middle game
Succeeding in getting the help of Britain in North Africa, picking up another centre in the Balkan regions and then creating an alliance with Republican Spain, enabling me to take Marseilles quickly made Italy a nation to be reckoned with.
But in the east, the combined might of Poland and Turkey was smashing the Soviets far more rapidly than I wished. And, with me at war with both France and Germany and soon to clash with Britain over North Africa and the Spanish question, my forces were spread thinly. It was at this juncture that the ???Serbian decision point??? came upon me: which major Eastern power was I to ally with, the Polish or the Turkish?
It was nice to be in the position of desired ally???especially given the alternative was to be that combination???s next victim!
Robert made a cogent argument: if Turkey got out of the box, he was going to be pretty much impregnable, with the only option available in the future containment???if possible. Further, the Polish build centres in the north were crucial to breaching British lines if my push out of the Mediterranean was to succeed.
However, my tactical position left me needing armies to deal with Germany, with my too few fleets required to support my beachhead in the fleshpots of the South of France and to prop up the shaky Republican government. If I was to fight Turkey, I would pretty much have to abandon the West, with Marseilles and the whole of Spain the likely costs.
So I felt that I had not much choice but to side with Turkey.
That is not to downplay Wladimir???s diplomacy, though: his clear demarcation of areas of influence, along with his expressed desire to not have the standard naval clash in the Mediterranean between Italy and Turkey, were strong influences on my decision.
And so Serbia fell under the Moslem yoke with Italian support.
After this, my game was not brilliantly played. Lots of misorders???and I mean lots???a failure to press home my advantage against Germany, a failure to convince Britain to seize centres on the continent until too late to help me, a failure to move decisively to position myself for a victory push ...
At one point, I was so depressed I was simply going to sit and put in draw proposals, but then I had two ideas, one tactical and one diplomatic. Both were designed to break the impasse over Munich and Czechia. The first involved giving Germany Austria; the second involved a fake war with my ally Spain???a fake war that I did not inform him of in advance, as I wanted the option of turning it into a real one if that suited me.
However, I did not???Karsten was a good ally and I was worried about fighting Turkey at this point. And given that Britain had moved on Germany and Munich had fallen to me, things were going well.
Endgame
The stab by Turkey was expected???not this one specifically, but in general: the two-way or three-way proposals that you kept putting to me, Wladimir, were not realistic in my opinion and kept me suspicious for a long time???but I do think that he moved a year or possibly two years too soon. A breakthrough was about to occur in the assault on Poland, and if that had happened and then he had made gains against me 18 centres would have been much closer. I have to congratulate Sun on his contribution to getting Wladimir to move at this point, though???Sun???s position was a very difficult one in the latter period of the game, and this diplomatic success probably ensured his survival.
Wladimir???s stab gave me some freedom of action, as I no longer felt morally bound to the Turkish cause. And so I determined to have a victory shot of my own. I doubt, however, that anyone noticed, as due to a monumental stuff up in fleet orders it was over before it began. I am not certain whether Karsten would have kept to the notion of helping me to victory if he could not be part of the draw???I do not think so???but thanks for the offer in any case.
While I know that others hate the five-way draw, I felt that it was reasonable. A small power should be rewarded, in my opinion, for hanging on and being able to use the tensions between the larger powers as potential solo bids loom to get included. It is what I play for when I have been reduced in size, so I have no real problems with other players benefiting from that.

To Charles, I did seriously wish to ally with you, and I think that the German/Italian alliance on this board has great potential. It is a shame that other things intervened???I certainly understand the relative importance of a game in the scheme of things.
To Nick, sorry about the eternal enmity. I do make friends of foes in Diplomacy on a regular basis, but the right set of circumstances never arose in this case (at least in my perception). You fought hard until the end.
To Sun, while we were enemies and while I lied to you much, much too often, I enjoyed our conversations. You played well???your only error from my perspective was to not seize the continental centres at your mercy much earlier. While I was plotting to eliminate you with Spanish help, I do not think that it would have been easy.
To Robert, you and I obviously had the most difficult of relationships. My decision not to communicate with you after the stab was mainly because I did not quite know what to say other than, ???I???m your enemy,??? without continuing to lie. So, while you suggested that I was the least trustworthy player on the board, I did only lie to you twice???poor Sun copped it at least a dozen times, and probably much more than that. I am amazed that you managed to reach 13 centres despite the long-lasting war between us. Excellent play.
To Karsten, thank you for your alliance. I believe that it was the key to me gaining the position that I held at the end of the game, and I think that it was your best option to progress. I wonder how often such an alliance will be formed between Italy and the Republicans, given the initial starting circumstances. If I had realised its potential sooner, I would have pushed it from the start. But we did well in any case.
And to my excellent ally, Wladimir, thanks. We forged a strong partnership very early and this partnership lasted even during the period of the stab and my aborted victory march. The lack of a naval clash probably in the Mediterranean is certainly not historical for pretty much any period of European warfare, but it worked very well for both of us.
Thanks for everyone for playing, thanks to Charles for designing the variant, and thanks very much to Dirk for GMing???and especially for putting up with what must have at times been very annoying misorders from me, which did not make your job of adjudication any easier. If you are running any more games, I would very much like to play. I will try to read the board a little better, though!

DC330: German EOG Statement & Designer Comments - charlesf   (Dec 07, 2010, 4:16 am)
Hi guys,

I'm afraid the game caught me at a bad time and I wasn't able to do
its negotiations justice. Not my proudest moment as a dipper and I
apologise for having made Germany far less of a factor than it ought
to have been.

Early on discussions over DMZs with Robert's Poland proved fairly
contentious. Similarly my fleet build proved unpopular in Downing
Street. So getting a fleet into BAL in an effort to take Sweden
proved a diplomatic liability in my relations to my neighbours, who
feared I was pursuing a course beyond the mere seizure of Sweden's
iron ore resources. Such troubles contributed to me lacking
third-party support in warding off later Italian aggression. I was
unable to persuade David to cease his anti-German drive and that
forced me to concentrate my diminishing forces in a losing battle
against the Italian hordes. A more engaged player might have found
some game-changer and also prevented the following British
onslaught. Caught in an Anglo-Italian meatgrinder, I was going down
fast. In a late last-ditch effort I asked Poland to support my moves
in the Fall of 1942 that would have kept me even at two SCs. I put
myself in this reliance on Robert's goodwill fully into his hands
and hoped he'd follow through on his promise to support said German
moves. Perhaps hoping that Poland would reverse its course was a
vain hope and a sucker play. But at that stage, owing to the
preceding indifferent play of mine, I was out of options.

So it just so happens that my worst showing in a Diplomacy game came
in the very first game playing my own variant. I wish I'd be able to
wind back the clock and have a real go at it. I'd like to thank Dirk
for doing such a good job running the game and the other players for
their commitment to the game. Wish I'd have been able to match it.

As for the variant, this was the only v1.3 playtest. Already the
later 1936 game I started (DC344) used the current v1.5 map, which
has Algiers and Suez serve as HSCs to their respective masters. To
diminish Franco-Italian tensions in the Alps, Tuscany was inserted
as an additional buffer province (shielding Rome), much as the
adjacent sea areas were adjusted to put more space between
Marseilles and Rome. My view is that these changes present a
significant boost to French fortunes. I'm confident that v1.5 France
is fully equipped to meet the challenges of a continental struggle.

Looking back at this game, I'm rather surprised that this game also
had Beirut fall early to Turkey and France fail to keep A Tripoli at
a distance. When are we going to see the first Franco-Italian bounce
over Tunis? I believe that to be the standard Spring '36 play, but
no French player has yet made that move. One reason why France has
underperformed to date. Similarly, I'm quite surprised Turks have
rapidly taken over Beirut. In my view, Turkey would do well to
enlist French support in the Near-East and not contribute to
weakening a power that is key in reigning in Italy, a major rival
Turkey has to fear. I'm anxious to see future games having both
France and Turkey fully explore the great potential of a
Franco-Turkish alliance.

Having Suez as a British HSC (as of v1.5) also transforms the
Near-Eastern picture. It amps up Britain's interest and involvement
in the region. I wanted to both reign in Turkey a bit with this
measure (which I considered a tad too strong), while also making
major British investment in the region more of a frequent
occurrence. For Turkey, sowing up her Near-East backyard becomes a
lot more challenging.

As DC344 has also recently concluded, I'm now recruiting for another
1936 v1.5 contest and might possibly organise a 1936 tournament,
provided enough GMing volunteers come forward and are willing to
help. I feel that with v1.5 the variant's in a good place and ready
for such a step.

In any case, I'm eager to hear any feedback regarding the variant,
especially in your take how you believe the v1.5 changes alter the
dynamics present in v1.3. As a point of reference, I've attached the
more recent map.

Cheers,

Charles

[Reply]

dc330 Turkish EOG - Wladimir7   (Dec 04, 2010, 10:14 am)
In the beginning, I was shocked at how unpopular Turkey was in the
bidding process. The Kemalist Republic seemed to be the best positioned
for defense in the corner as well as for growth via the Balkans. The
Middle East could easily be claimed and then attention could be sent
north and west. Seemed easy enough to me. When the bids came out and I
saw that it was the lowest ranked in the bids, my one goal was then to
show everyone how wrong they were.

Poland seemed like a logical ally and the PT alliance was huge for
me in the last playtest of this variant (except I was Poland). We both
have common enemies but different levels of conflict. If my dominance of
the Middle East was to be complete, I would have to keep the Soviets
out of Iran, annex Beirut from France and lock down the Suez from
outsiders. While Poland and I began working together against the USSR, I
felt comfortable being aggressive in the south. Nick was actually
really fun to communicate with and I felt bad having to move against the
Lebanon but it had to be done. The Soviets made a strong push into my
hinterlands while Poland advanced in the north.

Year 2 saw serious changes. The Soviets invaded Anatolia declaring
war while my ally in Poland left the Ukraine wide open. Instead he
strengthened his position in the Balkans while taking Romania. I could
no longer view my Polish ally as being on my side completely so I made a
plan with Papa Joe. Meanwhile I was communicating well with Britain and
France and trying to work something out with the two of them that would
ensure that France retreat his forces out of my hair. I think that was a
win-win-win (albeit a short-lived one for France). I was able to keep
good relations on my south as my northern front was beginning to take
shape.

Year 3 saw Poland finally move against our common enemy in Moscow
but it was after I had grown too concerned about my successful ally. He
was in a very dominant position since Germany was virtually
non-existent. I also took my favorite spot of the map, the Black Sea.
From here I would begin to aid the Soviets in their war against Poland
that occupied way too much time and resources for all powers involved.
The USSR gladly offered us Iran as a peace treaty which I found to be
fair. In my eyes. a mediocre corner Soviet was better for me than a
strong Poland possessing a corner position. I should also mention here
that Italy and I had excellent relations throughout this game which
enabled us both to build huge armies instead of clashing in the seas
like Italy and Turkey typically encounter. This coincided with slip-up
of Britain of leaving Suez without support. This is a good time to share
another of my interests in playing Turkey. It acts like a poor man's
Britain in that it can project power from the Atlantic to the Black.
There was one point in this game when I had a unit in Moscow and Morocco
at the same time. Crazy!

Alas, that was the apex of Turkish power. I made a pathetic attempt
at a stab of my Italian ally in the Med. On the one hand, I wanted to
take control of the Med while not completely stabbing him in the Balkans
where I still needed his help against a dug-in and well-defended
Poland. Shockingly, Italy did not like my attempt and built up quite an
arsenal aimed at thwarting any more Turkish attempts. He also supported
Poland against me leaving me at a real loss.

The last few years were tough on me in that I had to be pinned in by
the two other strong powers in my corner while knowing that I could
nothing against anyone any longer. It was like being an old bulldog. You
still want to be aggressive but you just don't have the energy or
ability to do so anymore.

In a game with 8 players, you hope for a better resolution than a
5-way draw. When the IPT draw didn't pass, I tried to get Poland and
Italy to work with me towards convincing Spain and Britain to accept the
more satisfying 3-way but that would have enabled one of us to become
quite a bit stronger than the others. When I thought more about it,
Turkey would probably not have received any of the spoils in a war
against Britain and Spain anyway so I went along with it. Sun and
Karsten should be happy to know that our dialogues helped in my
accepting a draw with you. 13 SC powers do not usually draw with 5 SC
powers but you both played strong the entire game. Even when things
looked dire for Karsten, he survived and eventually drew with the rest
of us. Sun was cagey the entire time as well and deserved to share in
this.

The game was designed well and I do believe the powers are fairly
equal. I still don't like the PU hostility that seems forced as well as
the French weakness but they can be overcome.

Thanks everybody for playing and I hope to come across you all again.

Wladimir

Diplomats,

Fight on. We've officially outlived historical WW2...

Sadly, unlike last year, Stalin will not be able to outlive a presumptuous adjudication. The Turkish irregulars finally turned on their erstwhile ally, conquering Stalingrad without possible retreat into a supply center. Farewell, Stalin!

Of course, Karsten lives on with his healthy 5 center Republican Spain.

There are two retreats:

Italian A Serbia can retreat to Albania, Croatia, Bosnia or OTB.

Polish A Saxony can retreat to Berlin, Greater Poland or OTB.

Owing to the late adjudication, retreats and builds/disbands (which may be contingent on retreats) are due on Friday by our usual time. Sun, please make sure to submit a conditional disband in the event Robert retreats into Berlin.

Finally, we have two bits of player press! Thanks so much for making this such a lively press game.

Turkish Press:

After many years of supporting the Soviet experiment, the Turkish government failed to renew the defense budget that supported the Soviet cause. There are many Islamists in the secular Ataturk state that are uneasy using Turkish blood to defend godless Communists. Because of this potential vulnerability that the good people of Stalingrad might have experienced, the Kemalist state has notified the Politburo that it will be annexing the area to defend them against any intra-Slavic revenge.

Also, the good people of Belgrade booted out their fascist rulers and re-invited their Turkish brothers. The Balkans yearn for the peace that the not-so-distant past brought them when they were all under the Crescent flag.

The Turkish government has also signed on the peace proposal that will finally cease the senseless blood-letting that has ripped this continent apart. Peace is in the air.

Red is the flag of the Soviet revolution, white is the color of the endless snow.
Today, we will ride one last time! The blazing guns of the Polish-Baltic Alliance will tear apart the frozen silence, but the beating of our hearts will be louder. The enemies numbers are sheer endless, but the stories told about our last ride will be without number. They will shatter our bones, they will tear away flesh, they will crush our last assault. Yet they cannot destroy the spirit, that we hold true in our hearts
White will be the last flag of the Soviet Revolution, red will be the color of the endless snow...

Also: don't forget to include with your order yay or nay votes on both proposed draws:

dc330: Draw proposals - dknemeyer   (Nov 17, 2010, 7:43 am)
Hi Everyone,
We have two draw proposals to consider, votes due with your Fall 1945 orders:
3-way IPT
5-way BIPST (DIAS)
Thanks,
Dirk

dc330: Sp45 Results! - dknemeyer   (Nov 16, 2010, 5:13 pm)
Diplomats,

Play on!

All three draw proposals burn like the villages of Europe. And with no new draw proposals to consider so far it appears we will see the end of 1945...

A schedule reminder: I am NOT planning to delay the game for the U.S. holiday Thanksgiving. If any of our players need a break on its account - or if people from other countries have similarly time-sucking holidays, please make sure there is at least one week's notice before a requested break.

Just one retreat: Italian A Slovakia can retreat to Czechia or OTB. I've taken the liberty of retreating it to Cze. Let me know, David, if you prefer OTB.

Italian Press:

"One day, however-- sad and melancholy day!-- peace was signed between the survivors of the war; the thunder of the guns gradually ceased, the mortars were silent, the howitzers were muzzled for an indefinite period, the cannon, with muzzles depressed, were returned into the arsenal, the shot were repiled, all bloody reminiscences were effaced; the tomatos and grain grew luxuriantly in the well-manured fields, all mourning garments were laid aside, together with grief; and the Italian military was relegated to profound inactivity." (Jules Verne)

Sad and melancholy day indeed. However, shall the guns rest silent forever? Shall no more once-human remants lie scattered across a wasteland of craters as the chatter of machinegun fire turns hopes and dreams to shattered bone and splattered blood? Nay. We shall not let that dreadful dawning come to pass. As a famous fighter once said, 'Peace.  I hate the word, as I hate hell, all Diplomats and thee, my fine opponents.' And one day I would make war on you again.

Hi Everyone,

Actually the Soviets DO have a retreat that keeps them in the game, into vacant Stalingrad! Duh.

So an additional retreat is for the not-yet-eliminated Soviets: can retreat to Stalingrad or Kazakhstan or OTB.

This obviously has implications on Turkey: a retreat to Stalingrad will require a Turkish disband. While we must assume Karsten will elect to remain alive, Wladimir please do submit two sets of orders: one for your losing Stalingrad and having a disband, and one for your retaining it.

Thanks,

Dirk

While Karsten will fight on with the Republicans, we bid adieu to Nick. A great sport, Nick was knocked down early yet continued playing with elan and keeping the game moving. dc330: Fa44 Results! - dknemeyer   (Nov 11, 2010, 6:35 pm)
Friends,

As the war closes in on its tenth year, will the belligerents reach an accord and find peace?

Of course not!

Another season of bloodshed is upon us...and unfortunately that marks the death of two powers and one player. France and the Soviets both are eliminated. While Karsten will fight on with the Republicans, we bid adieu to Nick. A great sport, Nick was knocked down early yet continued playing with elan and keeping the game moving. An excellent player to have in the game. Thanks Nick.

BUT, there is another opportunity to make love not war: a 3-way Italy-Poland-Turkey draw has been proposed. Be sure to vote yea or nay with your SPRING orders!

A schedule reminder: I am NOT planning to delay the game for the U.S. holiday Thanksgiving. If any of our players need a break on its account - or if people from other countries have similarly time-sucking holidays, please make sure there is at least one week's notice before a requested break.

There are only two retreats this season, both Turkish: A Rumania can retreat to Dobruja, Bulgaria or OTB. A Serbia can retreat to Bosnia, Bulgaria, Thrace or OTB. If Turkey takes both retreats he will have zero builds and disbands, whereas he will receive a build for each unit he chooses to disband instead. I took the liberty of disbanding Soviet A Moscow as its retreat will have no bearing on the situation.

Retreats and builds (which may be contingent on Turkish retreats) are due in just under 24 hours!

Italian Press:

In a concilatory gesture towards all his foes, Mussolini has put all Polish invaders of Czechia to the sword and massacred the peace-loving Turks of Serbia.

It is hoped by the world that these peaceful moves will at last end this conflict, which has torn Europe asunder and cast its shadow as far as China, Australia and South America.

The massacres were filmed and are available in NewsReel format. All proceeds from their sale will go to the Returned Services League of Italy or to Mussolini's monuments-to-himself building program - his choice, of course

Gents,
I'm adjudicating summer normally thanks to having all orders. Updated deadlines for the fall and subsequent seasons are at the bottom of this email.
British fleet SWA retreats to IRI while Turkish fleet Morocco disbands. Also please note I adjudicated an Italian order incorrectly and the map now reflects correctly the Italian order Par - Pic.
When you do get in your fall orders remember we have TWO votes up for consideration:
