Down to our fittest four.
Austria builds A Budapest, F Trieste
England builds A Edinburgh
Spring 1915 will come due next Thursday, November 11 on the oddly appropriate Veteran's Day... well, it would be appropriate if there were a draw proposal, but the truth is: I don't foresee a peace just yet.

DC 373: Fall 1914 Adjudication - AceRimmer   (Nov 03, 2011, 10:53 am)
Historical note: we have now reached Fall 1914. On July 28, 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war against Serbia, thus officially beginning the First World War. By Winter 1914 (our upcoming season), the war was in full swing, and the lives of otherwise decent men ended before they had a chance to develop into full manhood. Now, back to DC 373...

"Cassius from bondage will deliver Cassius.
Therein, you gods, you make the weak most strong;
Therein, you gods, you tyrants do defeat.
Nor stony tower, nor walls of beaten brass,
Nor airless dungeon, nor strong links of iron,
Can be retentive to the strength of spirit;
But life, being weary of these worldly bars,
Never lacks power to dismiss itself.
If I know this, know all the world besides,
That part of tyranny I do bear
I can shake off at pleasure."

"He that cuts off twenty years of life
Cuts off so many years of fearing death"

In total acquiescence, the Russian Bear lies down to sleep. Perhaps he has sipped of the wisdom of Cassius. Sometimes, it is better this way. Mr. Osellame, please inform me if you???d like to be removed from the email list; otherwise, you can expect to receive updates of the game???s progress.

Elsewhere, there are the usual shifts in the center (Munich to Silesia; Warsaw to Galicia to Ukraine to Moscow). France reclaims his loan of Rome to the Austrians... the Austrians disband. So, we advance straight to Winter 1914. Do not pass Retreats. Do not collect $200.

Due to the Austrian/English seizures of Russian centers plus the Austrian disband, we have the following:

Austria: Supp 12 Unit 10 Build 2
England: Supp 13 Unit 12 Build 1
France: Supp 7 Unit 7 Build 0
Germany: Supp 2 Unit 2 Build 0
Russia: Supp 0 Unit 1 Remove 1

The Russian disband is automatic. Dirk and Jack, you owe me orders by 14:00 CST tomorrow.

DC 373: Deadline Reminder - AceRimmer   (Oct 31, 2011, 4:22 pm)
I'm just reviewing my last email. The next deadline is Tuesday. November 2nd. Now, if you're smarter than me, you'll realize that Tuesday is November 1st. But my point was: get orders in by Tuesday! Well, poop. Okay, so the GM asks politely if you can get orders in by Tuesday, but he'll "deal with it" if orders are not in until Wednesday.

DC 373: Spring 1914 Retreat - AceRimmer   (Oct 26, 2011, 6:58 pm)
My apologies for the delay. Both Austria and Russia -- and me -- forgot about the deadline until yesterday.
Austria retreats his fleet to Venice. Russia disbands his army from StP.
I'm going to put Fall 1914 due next Tuesday, Nov. 2, at 2:00 CST.

Alright. We've got an adjudication. But (as usual, it seems) I'm running short on time at the moment, so I'm just going to give you the goods and wish you well. Events are quiet in most places where there are no Frenchmen. But nearby to the French, there's all sorts of activity.
We have two retreats:

DC 373: Winter 1913 Adjudication - AceRimmer   (Oct 16, 2011, 11:03 pm)
A couple of hitches on the Winter adjudication, but all is well. We have a French fleet in Marseilles, a couple of new Austrian armies (not to mention a decision to abandon Rumania!), and a scuttled English fleet in the Channel.
I think we can achieve Spring 1914 by this Friday. So, let it be done.

DC 373: F1913 Adjudication - AceRimmer   (Oct 13, 2011, 2:38 pm)
I had thought about some whimsical musical lyrics today, but nothing quite fit, and I???m running out of time. So, it???s just a straight-forward adjudication.

Maslow, you haven???t been with us long, but I feel all the same you???ve made an important contribution to our game. Your centers will always be cherished... and for the moment, they remain yours! I know I was wondering whether Dirk would absorb them or not. The answer is ???not???... for now. For his part, Dirk seems well-prepared for a surprise invasion from off-board North Pole Elves.

There are three end-game proposals:
EFGR
EFG
EF

Feel free to vote for more than one proposal. Votes are due with next week???s Spring 1914 deadline.

Meanwhile, there are two retreats ??? both auto-retreats. If Jack or Stephen wishes a change, you???ve got until tomorrow to let me know:

Austrian A Ukraine retreats to Rumania
Russian F Sevastopol retreats to Armenia

This sets up Winter 1913, which is due tomorrow:
Austria: Supp 11 Unit 10 Build 1
England: Supp 12 Unit 13 Remove 1
France: Supp 7 Unit 6 Build 1

DC 373: Spring 1913 Adjudication - AceRimmer   (Oct 07, 2011, 3:21 pm)
For Spring 1913, in anticipation of our new German's first set of orders with his small but centrally located force, I bring you a brief quote straight from the Man himself:
"Fortune, which has a great deal of power in other matters but especially in war, can bring about great changes in a situation through very slight forces."
Slight forces. It's almost like a cue line for Maslow's Germans to enter stage left. This season, there's a lot of reshuffling of English forces plus some perhaps crucial movement in the Carpathian Mountains. But there are no retreats. Not even a retreat/disband. So, Fall 1913... with your tacit permission, I'm going to speed us up by a mere day and set the next deadline for Thursday, October 13 at 2:00 p.m. CST.
Now, for Coming Out Festivities for Mr. Sir Maslow von Bayern.

DC 373: Game On - AceRimmer   (Oct 04, 2011, 11:14 am)
Of Matt "Ariovistus" O'Donnell, the history books (i.e. Caesar's Gallic Wars) inform us:

"[Caesar] then made the same demands which he had commissioned the embassadors to make, that [Ariovistus and his Germans] should not make war either upon [Rome's] allies, that he should restore the hostages; that if he could not send back to their country any part of the Germans, he should at all events suffer none of them any more to cross the Rhine."

Negotiations failed as Ariovistus' cavalry escort provoked a skirmish with Caesar's. Caesar and Ariovistus returned to their camps. After several days of repositioning...

"Thereupon the engagement was renewed, and all the enemy turned their backs, nor did they cease to flee until they arrived at the river Rhine, about fifty miles from that place. There some few, either relying on their strength, endeavored to swim over, or, finding boats, procured their safety. Among the latter was Ariovistus, who meeting with a small vessel tied to the bank, escaped in it."

So, Ariovistus departed the pages of Caesar's histories... and of DC 373... but not so the Germans! Their forces may be depleted, but they remain, and they are well-spoken as always in the arts of Diplomacy:

"[German] embassadors came to him from their state, whose speech was as follows: 'That the Germans neither make war upon the Roman people first, nor do they decline, if they are provoked, to engage with them in arms; for that this was the custom of the Germans handed down to them from their forefathers, - to resist whatsoever people make war upon them and not to avert it by entreaty'."

Enter Alex, better known as Maslow. I have both GM'd and been GM'd by Maslow. He was a participant in the legendary 10-year, entirely NMR-free DC 345. It's good to have you on board. I think you'll recognize a couple of familiar faces.

In case you haven't figure out yet, this is a Julius-Caesar-themed game. You can expect to be tortured with strange, out-of-context Caesar-related commentary.

I am resetting the deadline for Friday at 2:00 p.m. CST (Maslow lives in Alaska, and afternoon deadlines work better for him, if I recall). I can adjudicate sooner if everybody prefers.

Maslow, I'd send you a .dpy, but mine is loaded with everybody's orders, so please download the .dpy if you like from the game site by clicking on the little computer icon to the left and slightly below the game map:
http://diplomaticcorp.com/game_page.php?game_id=dc373

Meanwhile, I am attaching the current map as a GIF.

Here is our updated email roster:
Austria ??? Jack McHugh
England ??? Dirk Knemeyer

France ??? Mark Mizak
Germany ??? Alex Maslow
Russia ??? Stephen Osellame

Gentlemen, the caution flag has been stashed away, you may return to ruling the world.

DC 373: Ich bin kein Berliner - AceRimmer   (Oct 02, 2011, 2:02 pm)
I have no word from Matt. There are many reasons why a player may go incommunicado, but obviously, I can't know the true reason without hearing from the player.
Regardless the cause, for the purposes of game play, we need to move on. So, I will shortly advertise a Light Brigade replacement.

The following is adapted from a translation of Handel's opera "Giulio Cesare in Egitto" (Julius Caesar in Egypt):

"Grief and woe all hope deny me;
Adjudication would free me from my sorrow,
Yet alas, I may not adjudicate.
Though I mourn, though sorrow try me,
Though I weary of complaining,
Welcome adjudication will ne???er draw nigh."

DC 373: Winter 1912 - AceRimmer   (Sep 22, 2011, 8:46 am)
Austria builds armies in Budapest and Trieste
Germany disbands his Swedish barbarians
Spring 1913 is due next Thursday.
Schedule note: I know my own reduced schedule does not help (basically, I'm only available to adjudicate on Tu, Th, F)... but that's been exacerbated by some players asleep at the wheel. Please get orders in on time. [Indeed, if I read the pulse of this game correctly, we might actually speed it up if every player were to mark orders FINAL... remember, all Spring/Fall orders are presumed prelim unless otherwise marked. Then again, given the Russian retreat and the German disband, you may still be cherishing your time for negotiation].
Spring 1913 is due next Thursday, September 29th.
