DC 373: W1907 Maps - AceRimmer   (Jun 30, 2011, 9:41 am)
Since Monday is Independence Day here in the former British colony, I'm going to set Wednesday, July 6 at 10:00 a.m. as the Spring 1908 deadline.
Austria:
Build F Trieste
England:
Build A Edinburgh

DC 373: W1907 - AceRimmer   (Jun 29, 2011, 10:54 pm)
I seem to have forgotten this morning's adjudication.
Well, it was English army Edinburgh and Austrian fleet Trieste. I'll get out maps tomorrow.

DC 373: Shameless Plug and F1907 Retreats - AceRimmer   (Jun 28, 2011, 10:32 am)
This morning, I was reading Dirk Knemeyer's blog (he has one, y'know), and I learned of his latest venture -- one, I think, which is likely to be near-ish and dear-ish to Dippers' hearts. In partnership with some friends, Dirk is channeling his obsessive strategy game design skills along with a lifetime of frivolous gaming pursuits, not to mention a fair supply of entrepreneurial experience...
And the brainchild has been christened Conquistador Games (http://www.conquistadorgames.com/). To my way of thinking, the hands-down eye candy is "Road to Enlightenment". But I'm weird that way. Regardless, unless you're really upset about the English army in Moscow, you may turn a favor for your worthy foe and visit the site. Share it with your friends.
Elsewhere...
The Russian army in Moscow retreats to Sevastopol.
The French fleet in Ionian Sea steers for the open waters of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.
Austrian and English builds are due tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. CST!

DC 373: F1907 Adjudication - AceRimmer   (Jun 27, 2011, 11:38 am)
???But this Caesar does not pit man against man: he throws a legion at you where you are weakest as he throws a stone from a catapult; and that legion is as a man with one head, a thousand arms, and no religion.???

- ???Caesar and Cleopatra??? by George Bernard Shaw

Today, in the role of Caesar, we have Dirk. For a third straight season, his orders will permit no obstruction. He hurls a legion at Moscow. A catapult???s stone lands in Belgium. He lends support to the seizing of Silesia. The godless English march forward.

EFG stand in a circle and trade centers to the left. England takes Belgium. France takes Holland. Germany takes Denmark. I???m getting dizzy.

Meanwhile, Austria kind of claims a victory, if dislodging the French forward can be thought of as victory.

Three units are dislodged. The Austrian army in Silesia has no retreat and is disbanded.
The Russian army in Moscow auto-retreats to Sevastopol.
The French fleet in Ionian Sea may retreat to Albania, Apulia, Eastern Mediterranean, or OTB.

That retreat is due tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. CST, Mark.

Looking ahead to the Winter, we have two builds. Austria gets to rebuild his army. England gets a build from Moscow (but Russia does not disband, as he was already a unit short). That order will be due on Wednesday.

Austria: Supp 8 Unit 7 Build 1
England: Supp 8 Unit 7 Build 1
France: Supp 7 Unit 7 Build 0
Germany: Supp 4 Unit 4 Build 0
Italy: Supp 3 Unit 3 Build 0

DC 373: Adjudication with Flags - AceRimmer   (Jun 21, 2011, 10:34 am)
It occurs to me that I sent the adjudication without the 'flags': *Cut*, *Fails*, *Dislodged*, etc... If I had remembered to do so, I surely would've commented on the profusion of *Fails* in the Austrian adjudication. Truly, eight units -- six *Fails* and a *Dislodged*. That is a prodigious accomplishment in frustrated ambition. Conversely, England ordered seven units without a hitch.

The deadline is still next Monday.

"Forbear, then, to speak any more about an accommodation, for we can have no peace unless we carry Caesar's head back with us."
- Labienus, ???The Civil Wars??? by Julius Caesar

The vote on the French solo is resounding. There will be more blood. And what exquisite blood! So, let???s break this down???

The English and Germans participate in a long chain of orders: Lon-Nth-Nwg-Bar-StP-Lvn-Pru. The net effect is as though to pluck the English army from London and drop it into Prussia.

The French army in Belgium relocates to German-owned Holland.

The Italian fleet in Rome needs a map. (You will find one attached).

Austria seems ready to betray Italy, but it???s hard to convoy to Apulia when there is no fleet with which to convoy. The French pierce into the Ionian Sea.

This leads to the season???s one retreat order:
The Austrian fleet in Ionian Sea can retreat to Adriatic Sea, Albania, Apulia, Eastern Mediterranean, or OTB

This is due tomorrow by 10:00 a.m. CST, Jack.

Fall 1907 will be due next Monday, June 27th.

Lastly, my House Rules explicitly state that I will not publish press submitted to me by players. In the years since I first wrote those Rules, I have changed my mind on this topic. Beginning in the Fall, I will forward press. Please declare whether the press is anonymous or not.

DC 373: F1906 Adjudication - AceRimmer   (Jun 09, 2011, 11:28 am)
There is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer???s day than a nice refreshing adjudication. Served up, perhaps, over a bed of romaine lettuce with a fine garlicky, creamy parmesan sauce? Anchovies optional.

2-3 garlic cloves
1/2 c. oil
3/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1 egg
1 tsp. dry mustard
1/4 c. Parmesan cheese
1/4 tsp. black pepper
Croutons
Blend garlic and oil in blender. Add remaining ingredients, blend well. Pour over lettuce and add croutons just prior to serving.

France is bringing the mustard! England has the Worcestershire sauce. Germany provides olive oil to smooth the works. The sour, sharp sting of lemon juice belongs to Italy. The crunch of croutons comes from Russia. And Austria gets stuck with the egg.

Recipes aside??? there are Frenchmen in Belgium. And not just of the tourist variety. They arrive at the head of a train of salad-eating French armies stretching all the way from Spain.

England continues to not know what to do with his fleets.

And rather predictably, the Swedish regiment of the English army lands in Livonia while the French navy steams inexorably into Tyrrhenian Sea, where the defense seems oddly confused.

There is one auto-retreat: Italian F Tyrrhenian Sea ??? Rome

This sets up???

An end of game proposal. The proposal is: French solo.

Please vote on this proposal with your *Spring* orders (or vote sooner, but I???ll count votes in the Spring). If every player submits a ???Yes??? vote, then the game ends and Spring never happens. If a single player votes ???No??? or fails to vote, then I will adjudicate Spring as usual.

Meanwhile, we have adjustments from England, France, Italy, and Russia. They are due tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. CST.

Quoth Julius Caesar (from Plutarch???s Lives):

"Do you not think," said he, "it is matter for sorrow that while Alexander, at my age, was already king of so many peoples, I have as yet achieved no brilliant success?"

The game enters a sixth year, and still the contest proceeds slowly. By now, Alexander would be at 29 SCs. Caesar himself would own all of Gaul, Germany, and Spain (but no brilliant success). Meanwhile, the best of you is idling along at eight measly centers. Once again, the center is all locked up while interesting advances are made on the flanks. Here???s the abbreviated adjudication (i.e. all the units that move) ???

Austria: F Tri-Adr
England: A Den-Swe
England: F Fin-Bot
England: F Hel-Den
England: F Nth-Ska
France: F NAf-Tun
France: A Tun-Spa
Russia: F Sev-Bla

Lots of English units moving, but access to Livonia is denied. Germany and Italy hold still. Austria *Fails*. France nicely rotates a fleet into Tunis. The only dislodged unit ??? Russia???s F Bot ??? has no retreat and thus disbands. So, once again, there are no retreats (I cannot recollect such a retreatless game).

Fall 1906 is due next Thursday, June 9, at the inconspicuous hour of 10:00 a.m. CST.

DC 373: Adjudication in the Morning - AceRimmer   (Jun 02, 2011, 8:13 pm)
I had to leave work early today (bathroom tile DIY job at home), and I didn't receive one set of orders until after that. So, I'll adjudicate in the morning. Feel free to second-guess your orders up until the very last minute!

What? Is today already May 32nd?!? Well, then tomorrow must be Spring 1906.

DC 373: Winter 1905 - AceRimmer   (May 27, 2011, 12:39 pm)
I give up on trying to figure out the Brits. They build nothing. And Germany disbands its fleet in Skagerrak. And Austria builds a fleet. And Italy disbands F Ionian Sea -- a place where Italians don't like to disband fleets. So, all in all... none of you make any sense.
Austria:
Build F Trieste
England:
Build waived
Germany:
Remove F Skagerrak
Italy:
Remove F Ionian Sea
Spring 1906 will be due on Thursday, May 33rd (June 2nd?) at 10:00 a.m. CST.

DC 373: Fall 1905 Adjudication - AceRimmer   (May 25, 2011, 11:10 am)
I am thinking that Matt's armies may want an inspirational speech (delivered by Caesar to his soldiers, albeit in third-person -- Volume 3 of Caesar's "Civil Wars"Wink:
"if all their attempts were not crowned with success, the defects of Fortune must be supplied by industry; and whatever loss had been sustained, ought to be attributed rather to her caprices than to any faults in [Caesar]... but whether their own terror or some mistake, or whether Fortune herself had interrupted a victory almost secured and certain, they ought all now to use their utmost efforts to repair by their valor the loss which had been incurred; if they did so, their misfortunes would turn to their advantage, as it happened at Gergovia, and those who feared to face the enemy would be the first to offer themselves to battle.
Once again, all of the activity is on the flanks. More precisely, all of the significantly failed action is on the flanks. [Germany is the king of failed actions: void, cut, cut, bounce, bounce]. Only five units actually move anywhere, and most of those are behind-the-lines mobilizations:
French F Mid-Atlantic Ocean -> North Africa
Austrian A Rumania -> Galicia
Russian A Ukraine -> Moscow
Russian A Moscow -> Warsaw
English A Yorkshire -> Denmark
Ah, yes. Yorkshire. Denmark. Maybe it's part of a bold E-G plan to advance an English army quickly toward Russia. And maybe it's a stab. Actually, I'm going to venture a guess (with my usual no promises and no refunds guarantee) that it is a stab. Fortune has interrupted German victory. But Matt, remember Gergovia! And now industry and valor must repair your losses and turn misfortune to advantage.
But lest we forget... chief among the aforementioned failed actions: F Naples -> Tyrrhenian Sea (*Fails*). Don't think that went unnoticed. Austria builds and Italy disbands.
There are no retreats, so Winter 1905 orders will be due from all survivors except France and Russia tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. CST. Turkey is officially eliminated. But Russia is unable to use the build, as all his home centers are occupied (doh!). Also, as mentioned above, England wrests a build from Germany, and Austria takes a unit from Italy.
Austria: Supp 8 Unit 7 Build 1
England: Supp 7 Unit 6 Build 1
France: Supp 6 Unit 6 Build 0
Germany: Supp 5 Unit 6 Remove 1
Italy: Supp 3 Unit 4 Remove 1
