DC 373: Reminder - AceRimmer   (May 24, 2011, 11:04 am)
Deadline tomorrow. Get them orders in!

[Reply]

DC 373: Reminder (dc373) AceRimmer Jul 12, 01:14 pm
It's Julius Caesar's birthday! Or, tomorrow is...
But tomorrow most definitely is the Fall 1908 deadline. Submit orders.
DC 373: Reminder (dc373) AceRimmer Aug 18, 08:49 am
Deadline in about an hour. I am still missing one set of orders. I have confirmed all orders received.
Also, there's two end-game proposals that need votes. EFG draw. English solo.
(Sorry about the lack of reminder yesterday, but I've just moved to a new home, and phone/internet service has not yet been established).
DC 373: Reminder (dc373) AceRimmer Oct 06, 08:27 am
Spring 1913 is due in 30 hours.
DC 373: Reminder (dc373) AceRimmer Oct 20, 02:39 pm
I believe I sent out a reminder yesterday, but the deadline is not actually until tomorrow. Good thing I figured that out now. Anyway, thanks to those who submitted orders. And for those who didn't... please do so.
Don't forget to vote EF, EFG, EFGR.
DC 373: Reminder (dc373) AceRimmer Nov 16, 10:11 am
Votes and orders due tomorrow. I have two sets in... meaning that two sets are still absent.
DC 373: Fall 1905 Adjudication - AceRimmer   (May 19, 2011, 11:46 am)
???O mighty Caesar! dost thou lie so low?
Are all thy conquests, glories, triumphs, spoils,
Shrunk to this little measure????
- Act III, Scene i, lines 148-150

Turkey is a nation without a unit! Like great Caesar???s ghost, he remains a figment of our memories (as exhibited by the yellow markings in Sevastopol) even after his corporeal existence has ceased.

Elsewhere, the narrative of this game continues with motion on the flanks but silence in the middle. In the south, France misses an opportunity to seize TyS (not an easy guess to make). Italy must now ask the question: is Austria???s fleet in Naples friend or foe?

In the North, the relations between England and Germany are definitely a puzzle. England???s western units act as though ready to launch against the Kaiser. His eastern units vacate Scandinavia as though they have complete trust in Germany. Dirk, if this were a Constantine-themed game, I???d say, ???Sure, go ahead! Divide thine empire east and west!??? But this is a Julius Caesar-themed game, and you appear to be more like unto ???poor Brutus, with himself at war???.

There are no retreats. The only dislodged unit (Turkish A Sevastopol) has nowhere to go. Jack, I fear your active role in this game is done, though your elimination will not be final until the Winter.

So, we advance to Fall 1905, due next Wednesday, May 25th, at 10:00 a.m. CST.

DC 373: Fall 1905 Adjudication (dc373) AceRimmer May 25, 11:10 am
I am thinking that Matt's armies may want an inspirational speech (delivered by Caesar to his soldiers, albeit in third-person -- Volume 3 of Caesar's "Civil Wars"Wink:
"if all their attempts were not crowned with success, the defects of Fortune must be supplied by industry; and whatever loss had been sustained, ought to be attributed rather to her caprices than to any faults in [Caesar]... but whether their own terror or some mistake, or whether Fortune herself had interrupted a victory almost secured and certain, they ought all now to use their utmost efforts to repair by their valor the loss which had been incurred; if they did so, their misfortunes would turn to their advantage, as it happened at Gergovia, and those who feared to face the enemy would be the first to offer themselves to battle.
Once again, all of the activity is on the flanks. More precisely, all of the significantly failed action is on the flanks. [Germany is the king of failed actions: void, cut, cut, bounce, bounce]. Only five units actually move anywhere, and most of those are behind-the-lines mobilizations:
French F Mid-Atlantic Ocean -> North Africa
Austrian A Rumania -> Galicia
Russian A Ukraine -> Moscow
Russian A Moscow -> Warsaw
English A Yorkshire -> Denmark
Ah, yes. Yorkshire. Denmark. Maybe it's part of a bold E-G plan to advance an English army quickly toward Russia. And maybe it's a stab. Actually, I'm going to venture a guess (with my usual no promises and no refunds guarantee) that it is a stab. Fortune has interrupted German victory. But Matt, remember Gergovia! And now industry and valor must repair your losses and turn misfortune to advantage.
But lest we forget... chief among the aforementioned failed actions: F Naples -> Tyrrhenian Sea (*Fails*). Don't think that went unnoticed. Austria builds and Italy disbands.
There are no retreats, so Winter 1905 orders will be due from all survivors except France and Russia tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. CST. Turkey is officially eliminated. But Russia is unable to use the build, as all his home centers are occupied (doh!). Also, as mentioned above, England wrests a build from Germany, and Austria takes a unit from Italy.
Austria: Supp 8 Unit 7 Build 1
England: Supp 7 Unit 6 Build 1
France: Supp 6 Unit 6 Build 0

DC 373: Fall 1904 - AceRimmer   (May 12, 2011, 9:36 am)
Once again, I had late orders yesterday. And when I did receive them, I was not at liberty to adjudicate. So, with my apologies, your Fall 1904 adjudication is a day late.

Now that I am GM???ing this game, I suddenly find myself reading Shakespeare???s Julius Caesar in full. There are some excellent Diplomacy references. If you should recognize the following players, be careful. Be very, very careful.

???[Cassius] reads much;
He is a great observer, and he looks
Quite through the deeds of men???
Seldom he smiles, and smiles in such a sort,
As if he mock???d himself, and scorn???d his spirit
That could be mov???d to smile at anything.
Such men as he be never at heart???s ease,
Whiles they behold a greater than themselves???

Or,

???And why should Caesar be a tyrant, then?
Poor man! I know, he would not be a wolf,
But that he sees the Romans are but sheep;
He were no lion were not Romans hinds.???

Even after all these years, I am still startled by the accuracy of this second sentiment. Ah, it takes me back to my first game of Diplomacy when a seemingly friendly Italian persuaded me (Austria) that Greece is rightfully Italian. The rest of that game was all too brief.

Fall 1904 is a season of patience and minor adjustments. Lots of holds and supports (especially from a certain Kaiser). Eight units move successfully. But not a single one of them enters a supply center. Six of the moves are south of the stalemate line. And only one move meets any sort of resistance (the Russian seizure of Armenia).

Austria hasn???t cleared up his communication problems yet ??? he has yet another void support.

France releases doves as a peace gesture to Italy. At least, I think that???s what he means.

And there are no retreats. The Turkish fleet in Armenia is no more. And therefore we build. Or, put more properly, Austria, England, and France build. Russia must disband. Let us have these orders by tomorrow (Friday) at the usual time of 10:00 a.m. CST.

Austria: Supp 7 Unit 6 Build 1
England: Supp 6 Unit 5 Build 1
France: Supp 6 Unit 5 Build 1
Germany: Supp 6 Unit 6 Build 0
Italy: Supp 4 Unit 4 Build 0

Hi Folks,

Glad to be joining you. I am coming as a member of the DC
"Light Brigade", which exists to help games complete
efficiently once players have dropped out. I hope to help
uphold that standard!

Adam, with that in mind, I would be comfortable keeping the
existing deadline if that also works for the other players.

DC 373: S1904 Adjudication - AceRimmer   (May 06, 2011, 8:57 am)
I could be well moved, if I were as you;
If I could pray to move, prayers would move me;
But I am constant as the northern star,
Of whose true-fix'd and resting quality
There is no fellow in the firmament.
The skies are painted with unnumber'd sparks;
They are all fire and every one doth shine;
But there's but one in all doth hold his place.
So in the world, 'tis furnish'd well with men,
And men are flesh and blood, and apprehensive;
Yet in the number I do know but one
That unassailable holds on his rank,
Unshaked of motion; and that I am he,
- Julius C??sar. ACT III Scene 1

This western triple alliance holds together with earnestly sworn oaths of loyalty. Well, the juicy centers of St. Petersburg and Tunis don???t hurt. Both fall, as the English advance into Russia, the French seize Tunis, and the Germans have their own gain in Prussia.

Elsewhere, Austria may (or may not) have some communications problems. We have not one but two voided supports ??? one by Austria; one offered to Austria. And is the end near for Turkey? His two units hold lamblike, ready for the pending slaughter.

There are two dislodgements. The Turkish fleet in Ankara retreats to Armenia (let me know within 24 hours if you prefer to disband, Jack). The Italian army in Tunis has no retreat options and thus disbands.

Fall 1904 will be due on Wednesday, May 11 at 10:00 a.m. CST.

Please, please, please, please, please??? send me your prelims.

"I wanted to give an update on the service outage some of our users have experienced today. The issue started at 7:30AM and at it???s worst, around 11AM, about one million users were unable to access their email. We have isolated the root causes of the problem and have restored service. No email data was lost or at risk.

We understand that being denied access to your email is extremely frustrating. We are taking steps to prevent this kind of outage in the future."

Your GM was without mail from mid-morning through evening yesterday. Which means that the already overdue adjudication (which will lead to a couple of NMRs) is only happening now.

So, I forgot that there was an adjudication yesterday. No wonder I forgot -- nobody sent me any orders.
To reiterate:
Turkey has two retreats (one is an auto-retreat):
F Constantinople retreats to Ankara (unless ordered off the board)
A Smyrna can retreat to Ankara, Armenia, Syria, or off the board.
Italy gets a build. Turkey has a disband.
The retreats and builds will be adjudicated simultaneously.
Let's get those orders in!

Fierce fiery warriors fought upon the clouds,
In ranks and squadrons and right form of war,
Which drizzled blood upon the Capitol.
- Julius Caesar. ACT II Scene 2.

It is a Fall of standoff in the center plus movement in the periphery. In 1904, opportunities will abound. Treachery can only multiply those opportunities.

Turkey is invaded. Two-fold. Yet Russia sees no gains. The Crimea falls. All the while, England advances rapidly in the north. Germany is in the Baltic Sea. And Italy earns a build ??? just in time to welcome French visitors from the West.

There are two retreats. Both Turkish:
F Constantinople retreats to Ankara (unless ordered off the board)
A Smyrna can retreat to Ankara, Armenia, Syria, or off the board.

Assuming no OTB retreats, Winter adjustments will be just the Italian build an Turkish disband:
Austria: Supp 6 Unit 6 Build 0

France: Supp 5 Unit 5 Build 0
Germany: Supp 6 Unit 6 Build 0
Italy: Supp 5 Unit 4 Build 1

So, as you may all know, there is a stalemate line that runs with variations from StP to NAf. It is thither that we turn our attention, as Austrian, French, German, and Russian units all fly thence! The French convoy is particularly cool. And unexpected.

Lest it be forgotten, the siege of Turkey continues. If at first you don???t succeed, try, try again... or, is it: if you always do what you???ve always done, you???ll always get what you???ve always gotten? Anyway, Italy convoys to Smyrna. I???ll let you see for yourself how it turned out.

There are no retreats. So, Fall 1903 will be due on Thursday, April 21 at the usual time (10:00 a.m. CST).

DC 373: F1902 - AceRimmer   (Apr 07, 2011, 11:10 am)
Continuing on the theme of negotiations, plans, and early diplomacy:

???Fere libenter homines id quod volunt credunt???
- Julius Caesar

Also, one of our players has contributed:

"Be civil to all; sociable to many; familiar with few; friend to one; enemy to none"
- Benjamin Franklin. (who obviously never played a game of Diplomacy in his life)

And finally, I would like to remind you that your plans are fruitless ??? in the US, it has been popular in recent years to paraphrase Napoleon that no plan survives its first contact with the enemy ??? your plans are fruitless except in how well you can carry them through. And in Diplomacy, that absolutely requires good, strong communication. I get the impression that some of you are letting the communication slip. Of course, you are free to do so, but I wouldn???t advise it.

There are no retreats, which is not to say there are no dislodgements. The Russian army in Denmark is obliterated. And Sweden falls to the Brits (who nonetheless support the Russian army in Denmark???). All in all, events in the north are not too friendly to Russia.
The EFG triangle gets spicier, too. Belgium has a master. Wales has visitors, but will they stay for long?
Turkey fends off invaders. Kind of a bummer, eh, Tom? And Austria??? Austria! Seems to think he belongs in Germany, ???cuz that???s where half his units are headed.
Folks, 1903 looks full of promise. But first, let???s have adjustments. Builds are due *tomorrow* at 10:00 a.m. from Austria, England, and Germany:

DC 373: Deadline Reminder (dc373) AceRimmer Oct 31, 04:22 pm
I'm just reviewing my last email. The next deadline is Tuesday. November 2nd. Now, if you're smarter than me, you'll realize that Tuesday is November 1st. But my point was: get orders in by Tuesday! Well, poop. Okay, so the GM asks politely if you can get orders in by Tuesday, but he'll "deal with it" if orders are not in until Wednesday.
DC 373: Your enemies hate you; you are surrounded... - AceRimmer   (Apr 01, 2011, 9:55 am)
???Between the acting of a dreadful thing
And the first motion, all the interim is
Like a phantasma or a hideous dream;
The genius and the mortal instruments
Are then in council, and the state of man,
Like to a little kingdom, suffers then
The nature of an insurrection.???
- The Tragedy of Julius Caesar

To me, Spring 1902 is always a tense, fraught moment. Oftentimes, it is the first season when players take overt action (though some remain covert). I spend days in negotiations and cross-negotiations??? with the upshot that, ultimately, I am lying to somebody ??? and not just to myself. Then, when my orders are in, I sit on my hands (so as not to chew my fingernails) and nervously await the adjudication.

Well, this is the adjudication.

I should note now that I have seen many players get shafted in 1902, only to see them rise like a Phoenix later. (Indeed, in the last game I GM???d, the Russian was attacked by the Austrian ??? there was even an Austrian army in Ukraine after 1902 ??? but in the end, the Austrian was eliminated, and the Russian soloed. Then again, the Brit got tricked by a German-Russian plot, and he never recovered, eking out a mere survival at the end).

Two units get dislodged. But I don???t need any retreat orders. The German army dislodged from Denmark has but one retreat option and thus auto-retreats to Kiel (per my house rules). Matt, if you would prefer to disband, let me know within 24 hours. Meanwhile, the Turkish army in Bulgaria has nowhere to run. For that matter, it has nowhere to hide. It disbands.

Fall 1902 orders will be due next Thursday, April 7, at 10:00 a.m. CST (15:00 GMT).
