Fleets clash in the Numidian Sea as the Roman navy gets a little help from the Tribes of Gaul... Germania takes another blow, but has a retreat option to a Roman home center! Meanwhile the Oracle at Delphi has new news for the Romans... "just kidding about Greece, we meant to go to Rome?" Both Greece and Carthage hold on for another season, who will be the honorary first elimination?

…and call me in the morning.”

Is the message to Gaul, as both Boj and Iaz get blasted. One manages an option to retreat, the other is left a tattered spread of blood and guts on the battlefield.

The proposed 4-way draw fails.

2 armies are disbanded… Iaz of Gaul, and Aquelina of Germania.
1 army may retreat… Gaul’s Boj can go to Ali or Bel, by Monday 2pm Pacific

Fall of 211 BC shall then be Friday 12/21, 2pm Pacific - 1 week from today, to squeeze it in before Christmas.

Then we’ll run into the question of Builds… I’m happy to have the builds deadline be 12/24, if nobody objects, and then the next deadline maybe 12/30 or 31?

Let me know if anyone has holiday plans and would like time off during the festivities.

Egypt beats his best with 8/9 fails this round! If not for a darn support order he could have had a perfect score.

I should point out that Gaul has ordered the same twice in a row, and if by chance there are 4 consecutive turns of no substantial change, unless a player can convince me of a path to another result, the game may be declared a DIAS by... "Him".

dc109 (Ancient World) EGS's - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Here's my take on things:

As Rome was the only one of my immediate neighbours not to reply to my opening greetings, I assumed he was hostile and started planning with Carthage and Germania to take him on. However, after I'd secured control of Narbonensis, he acknowledged that and turned out to be quite amenable to dialogue, and Carthage's undefended position in Spain now looked by far the most tempting attacking option - better to fight outwards to a sustainable position on the edge of the map than in towards the centre with exposure on all sides. (no surprise that Rome and Macedon weren't among the powers left standing at the end)

The stab was successful, and the next pressing question was how to deal with Germania, who, having reached an impasse with Scythia in the east, and with a fleet in the water to my north, looked a likely enemy. The idea I settled on with him was that we would take on Rome together and he would send his fleet down and round into the Mediterranean to help out there, but I wasn't at all certain of his true intentions and was very keen to neutralize the threat of his fleet. Fortunately I got a second fleet out to sea before he managed another fleet build and that allowed me to take control of the situation. And once his fleet was eliminated there was no longer any need to defend my Atlantic coastline, so I was free to really go on the offensive.

The rest of the German coast was essentially mine for the taking, as he now had no way of challenging my seapower, but I didn't want to weaken Germany such that Scythia could take advantage and advance further west. So I turned my focus to the Med, where I was keen to prevent Egypt from expanding too far in my direction or from grabbing too large a chunk of the disintegrating Roman empire. I was very pleased when he agreed to pull back and allow me to take Cartenna, while I had finally persuaded Germany to shove Scythia backwards, allowing me to grab the remaining German coastal territories without the knock-on effect of bringing Scythians onto my doorstep.

I'd be very interested to know at what precise stage the 3 eastern powers decided to commit to a dedicated anti-Gaul alliance (and what they had each been planning prior to that moment), but I suspect it was here, with Rome and Germany crumbling and a sudden surge taking me to within striking distance of a solo victory. I had been waiting for a fight to break out between them since they'd polished off Macedon (whose dithering had quickly proved fatal - he really needed to commit to a fight one way or another and make a positive ally out of one of his neighbours, but instead he tried to keep everyone happy and they all took a piece of him) but it never materialized. If it had, then I think the distraction would have made it relatively easy for me to sweep through the Med and take the remaining SCs I needed for a solo.

Even so, I still had a chance, but crucially Rome's NMR put paid to that. He was on the way out anyway, but could nevertheless have booted the lone Egyptian army off the Italian mainland and staved off defeat for a while longer. That would have significantly advanced my own position relative to Egypt's, but as it was, Egypt managed to consolidate his position and, despite losing Carthage, put up a barrier to any further eastwards expansion from me. My last remaining hope was that the erratic German would somehow help me to make a breakthrough on land, but he wasn't about to do me any more favours and his final kamikaze about-turn put the seal on a stalemate draw between the remaining 4 powers.

I think that was a fair result in the end, even if it was a little bit boring watching my 3 adversaries cosying up to each other to such an extent. Poor old Trout, as Persia, didn't have the chance to play a very expansive game. He could have inflicted serious damage on either Egypt or Scythia, but was forced to show restraint so as not to lose the game overall, and I suppose there is some satisfaction to be derived from that.

Thanks to everyone, especially Mike the GM, for the game. I look forward to hearing what other people have to say about it.

I have to say I didn't expect to make it this long. Had Gaul not

dc109 Ancient World - Game End! - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
The DIAS passes with 4 yes votes. Since the draw passes, moves are not adjudicated and the board position remains the same from last year... (heh -- and the year before that, and the year before that... )

Final season: Spring 13 (Spring 208 BC).
25 seasons.
224 days of real-life time, making for an average of about 9 days per season.

That sure was confusing having the years count backwards!

Congratulations to:
Rupert / Gaul (15), Garry / Egypt (9), Steve / Scythia (Cool, and Trout / Persia (Cool for their 4-way draw!

In 5th place is Jerry / Rome, eliminated year 9
In 6th place is Lee / Carthage, eliminated year 6
In 7th place is Josh / Macedonia, eliminated year 5
In 8th place is Tony / Germania, Civil Disorder spring of year 12

I personally thought this map was outstanding, and enjoyed every minute of it! Also copied on this game-end are Tez and Kornel, the map creators in case you guys want to keep stats on it. There was some really great press too, which makes any game more entertaining. This is certainly a variant that I would consider playing in some time.

Looking at how things are now, I might have liked to see some action in the east... Rupert was 6 sc from a solo, surely gaining 6 would take quite a fight. Would that have been far enough off that he couldnt have gotten it? We will never know, at least you all felt it wasn't worth risking.

EGS's are definitely welcome and encouraged! Be sure to copy all.

Enjoy,

Uhm - by building your fleets you reset the clock on the enforced DIAS.

Mike specifically stated in the Fall adjudication that builds would create a board-changing situation. This is why Persia didn't build for the second turn in a row.

When I saw your fleets, I assumed that you no longer wanted a DIAS...

Draw is voted down, nothing moves.
Even the Scythian goats cant be bothered by the efforts of their Persian molestors.

I’m calling this year 2 turns of “no substantial change”. If 2 more seasons pass w no activity, it will be declared DIAS.

I love GM’ing, but really… if you’re not going to pass the draw or do something, my efforts could be better spent bludgeoning my head with a large mallet.

2 builds. Due Wed, 2pm Pacific. If either nation builds, I will consider that a reset of the “no substantial change”.

Scythia:

DIAS is reproposed for spring.

dc109 f216 BC Results! - An Egyptian Comic in Rome... - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
With orders…
-mike

An Egyptian Comic in Rome?
Amon Simbatala Leonida the Fourth [Simba the Great Sphinx] yawned in boredom. Ever since sending Tarsis off to the wilds of the barbarians across the sea to be an Oracle he had been bored and sullen. He missed the wit that that young one had. He knew that it was the lot of the Lion Kings to not get much pleasure out of life but that didn't mean that he had to like it. But today was going to be different - as he read the Mediterranean World News [owned by that foul Gaul Rupert Murdochebury] an article caught his attention. It was about an Egyptian who was captured in a covert raid on Alexandria by Glutius Maximus. Reported to be an Egyptian of exceeding intellect, he apparently had been pressed into service giving performances in front of the mighty Sergeant Jerrius Noncommunicatus.

"Hmm," Simba wondered out loud. "An Egyptian comic? I always thought that we were too busy worshipping this Sun God or that Lord of the Dead to be funny?"

Simba roared out loud, a plan forming in his mind.

Brudha, the young LionTalker who had taken Tarsis' place and was sure to become a great prophet one day, came running when he heard the great Simba roar.

"Oh Great Simba, what is wrong? What ails you?"

Simba grumbled, "We have a son of the Pharaohs that has been pressed into the service of another. This I cannot bear. At once you must instruct the Pharaoh's armies to this strange empire of Rome to rescue him. His name is..."

"Comicus."

6 Months Later...Ionian Sea
The Egyptian sea captain shook his head. A raid on some back-water countryside province that he couldn't even remember the name of? Ipanema? Oh well, it isn't important. But this ferrying business is getting tiresome. Can't I get a real assignment like raiding a town? All of my brothers are off pillaging barbarian towns and I get stuck with ferry duty. I better get to go attack a nice cozy seaside town after this. I hear that Sicilia is nice in the Fall.

The captain merely shook his head. There was nothing for it. For now he had become the personal ferry-man for the Pharaohs elite armies.

"Alright you slags. Let's get going. Time for us to do the Pharaohs bidding." And once again miss the action, he thought. "It's off to Ipanema, or Kilimanjaro, or Aperture or whatever. Set sail."

*****************************************************************

Today we bid farewell to our newly departed Macedonians. Our prayers will rest with the Greeks and their fearless leader Josh. Except for maybe the young Persian scribe, Atar… unaware of the magnitude of what’s happened here… the deals that were cut with the sheep-defiling Scythians… the monies paid to buy off the Egyptian navy… he picks up a tattered map of the universe, gazes quizzitively and casts it aside… “Camelspit – What did these Greeks know anyways!”… kicking around the scrambled remains of some once-right triangles, he wonders what his nation really stands for. The Oracle said it was time for a change… But this?
