auto-Judges and Grace period for NMRs - DucatiRider   (Feb 01, 2012, 5:18 pm)
Any chance this site will support automated judges for adjudication? I really don't like playing 7 day deadline games. I prefer 24 hour games. I understand that's too much to ask for a human judge. So will this site ever adopt an auto-judge system and therefore be able to do 24hr or even 12hr deadline games?

Also, I'm not a fan of NMRs being treated as CD. I understand that's in the official rules but I prefer the grace period system. The USAK judges uses this system. Every player is given a set number of hours for a grace period. If they are late they get an email warning and their grace period begins to count down. If they use up their grace period the player is kicked from the game and the game pauses until a replacement is found.

It's a sucky system but I prefer it to the cheap-win system when your enemy gets the benefit of a nation that's simply holding.

There are a lot of websites that use automated judges. DC was founded as an alternative, so ALL games are run by humans. If you want automated games, go check out one of the other sites. Please don't take what I've said as a brush off. It's sort of like going to a butcher for pears. "That ain't what we serve here."

As for grace period, a few (very few) GMs do this. I used to do it, but it can get complicated (can another player use a grace period to update his orders, what if two players are late, etc) and so now I send reminder e-mails 24 hours before the deadline to players whose orders I'm missing. Most GMs send at least general reminders.

As for holding the game because of a single missed turn, Diplomacy is supposed to reflect the real world, and in the real world sometimes people are late. This doesn't really create "cheap wins", as it could happen to anybody, and at any rate you still need to fight with the other 5 players. They will ALSO try to exploit the situation.

Also, holding games up ruins the sense of pace - I've seen multiple games die while waiting for a replacement, even if its only a day or two. Everyone plays it out, but its more out of a sense of duty than a sense of fun.

You sure? Where? There are a lot of judges that you submit orders to. But very few actual website based judge sites. The only one I know of is playdiplomacy.com. But they exclusively use CD for NMRs.

I don't see the need for exclusivity. Why can't this site run both judge based games for those that like quicker deadlines as well as human based judges? Why can't it have CD NMR games as well as grace period NMR games? Why the need for just one version?

There are pros and cons to both NMR systems. Really no need to debate the differences. Both are systems used in the Diplomacy world so why not allow for both?

Blue had a lot of good points. In fact I don't think I could have expressed them better.

As to dc, we were created to be a friendly gaming group, not an automated move submission "system". Because people get personally vested in these games, I think it leads to a higher caliber of game than what you'll find on one of the automated submission sites.

Remember Dip is at heart, an interpersonal game.

A "system" could be more methodical in many ways. Always on time, never making mistakes -- But board games do not generally exist w such dynamics. I don't know how much you play Face to Face... but in those games, things get hectic. There are people complaining about someone turning in moves past the buzzer, ppl arguing about legibility, and so on. It is human-judgement oriented. We have strived to deliberately keep that human element to the game.

In any case, here another fundamental is that every GM sets his or her own rules. This leads to a diverse array of styles being enjoyed.

Some GM's will give grace periods. Some will run faster games. Personally I like games that move at about a week per turn - around 5 days for the spring / fall and 2 days for the retreats / builds. That seems a good balance of keeping the game hopping and edgy yet still allowing everyone time for real life.

Then there is the WB, which has speedy 2-day turnarounds! How come you aren't playing in that? It seems like just what you're looking for. You might not like the NMR rules tho, of not waiting for missed orders.

If you want to run a game per your style - 24 hour turnarounds and grace periods for missed results, just fill out the "GM a game" form and we'll make it happen! It has been done before, Felix was always a fan of the speedy game, and he had no trouble GM'ing them to a fast schedule.

This probably doesn't belong here, but I can't find any other way to mail DipWiki.

I registered there as a new user three days ago; I've had the validation e-mail, responded, and received a confirmation. But three days on the Log-In still tells me there's no user with my name.

Can anybody help?

Once a game launches, the site will track how many days have passed since the game started. I looks like there is a default entry for games that have not launched yet. Mike or Garry should have a more technical explanation, but that is the gist of it..

i came here a little more than a year ago from another community and it is great here. there are many quality players with friendly smiles and sharp knives. you'll fit right in as long as you are submitting orders on time.

welcome to the DC.

Hello folks, I'm new here, so I have a couple of questions for you all.

1) On a game's page, the "Real Life Time" is the in-game time, is it not? I'm sure the game doesn't really last for 15246 days!
2) Any things I should know about this community?

Tips:

Communicate... even if you're sure that no one will work with you, talk to them.

Prelims... get prelim orders in just to make sure you've got some. Nothing hurts more than "No Moves Received"

Stick Around... even if a game is going poorly, people will respect you for finishing it out.

Join a Game... have fun.

Actually, a n00b to this community, but an on-again, off-again Dip player for the last 30 years or so.

I was just wondering if there were any tips, suggestions, etc from the guys here to help me along in this. My first time trying pbem and am kind of geeked up about the idea. After all, Dip is the perfect game for this sort of thing.

All suggestions & comments welcome!

Thanks, and hope to see you in game soon.

Surrender - Blueraider0   (Feb 11, 2011, 11:02 am)
So one of my players in DC 351 has "surrendered." To me, it just says "Order all units to hold until otherwise noted." Thus he will not NMR, nor be replaced. I have e-mailed him to clarify what the heck he meant, but until I hear from him, I'm a bit stuck.

The country is a collapsing Turkey, with Italy and Russia invading from the east (Austria was just eliminated). So having his units stand indefinitely will probably benefit them (though it may also cause them to fight) and no one else. So I'm not really sure what to do with such a lopsided situation.......

Hey DipWolf,

You just send press directly to the other players. And you just send your orders in to the GM, similar to what you put in your posting. The only other difference I can think of in PBEM Dip is it is much slower. The fastest games at DC play one year per week, whereas a typical game will play one major and minor season per week.

Enjoy!

So I've just signed up for an account here and I have a number of questions about how things work in this community.

If it's relevant the experience I've had is with:
F2F
PhPdiplomacy
Playdiplomacy

I'm wondering how a number of things work with PBEM.

How exactly does press work on that site? Do you just send emails to other in your game or, do you send them to the GM to be sent to the other players according to your instructions? Is there a typical format for giving instructions for how it is posted?

For entering orders is it done though an order submission field? Or do you send your orders into the GM though email? Is there a set syntax to sending in orders besides the one for how the orders look

> F Spn move to MAO < (Or would something like that not fly here?)

Are there any other specifics I should know about PBEM that make it different then automatic adjudication and F2F?

Thanks for you time. I apologize if this is already posted somewhere I couldn't find anything about it.

Yes, I meant the Rank like "Knight Captain" and its symbol.
The Merits are already shown but I'm missing the accompanying rank. And with all that work that was put into them, why not give it some more visibility?

I think the Rank would spark the interest of those that are not familiar, perhaps even add some competition Very Happy, and further distinguish DC from some other sites listing player ranks.

Nick, I smiled when you wrote that. I loved being ranked #2 after one game. Of course I plummeted to the middle soon after that.

I have no problem with putting "Herald" or whatever ahead of names, as long as there's room for it. But I'm not sure what it adds, since I'd guess almost no one knows the order of those rankings.

If that is what he means, it shouldn't count provisional ratings. I'm definitely not comfortable being the 8th "best" player on the website on the strength of one game.

A new look for DC! - Dudemaster   (Jul 22, 2010, 12:30 pm)
Hello! While I am not the most regular of visitors and this is a fairly old topic, here are my 2 recommendations (this is a partial democracy after all!):

1. This is important. The logo of the website needs to be remade. Now, I am not an artist of any sort, but if there are any on this website, why not put up a message on the front page for them to see? The logo is fine and its size fits in just fine with the [excellent] website design, but it is terribly pixellated and the letters cannot be made out. Also, it is not too distinctive to make a visitor think every time he/she sees the logo 'Why, this must be about Diplomaticcorp!' So for those reasons, while a new logo is not urgent by any means, why not look into it? There is nothing to lose!

2. [minor] On the front page, on both Google Chrome and the Opera browser (maybe others, I don't know) the [non-HTML] line break has the writing 'DC is undergoing some renovations - please post any comments or ideas in the Help & Suggestions forum.' over it while the writing should probably be above the line break. If this could be fixed, that would be great. It's not of big importance anyway, although I wouldn't call it nitpicking either.

Regardless of these fairly minor annoyances, if you will, the website looks a million times better than the old website. There is now a proper, fully existent 'House style' (a term used to denote consistency in the layout of a website) and the website seems much better overall and also easier to use.
Congratulations!

-- DM
