And I'm back!! - Blueraider0   (Apr 09, 2013, 4:04 pm)
Hello to you all! I'm back after a hiatus being inundated with post-grad work teaching 5th grade (tricky little buggers!). I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and by May my life will be easy peasey. At least compared to this deluge of work.

I'd like to run a game of Game of Thrones, the variant which Matt and I created last spring. I'm wondering if there's any interest in such a game.

Excited to get back in the swing of online Dip!

Diplomacy Variant - mmedeiros   (Jan 26, 2013, 4:10 pm)
Is anyone intested in play-testing a Diplomacy variant that incorporates several variants? I was working on one but would only take it to completion if I can get some interested folks.

Here is how the variant goes: it's a five player variant (France, England, Austria, Spain, Denmark/Sweden) set in early 17th century Europe that utilizes Classic Payola rules and Royale rules (with modifications), and other minor rules that take into consideration, as an example, unit strengths (which are kept secret as in Stratego) and which can be affected by combat, terrain, and winter conditions. Other rules involve variable supply center values and restrictions on naval movements. The Royale rules, suitable to the setting, will allow players to manage a dynastic family (Austrian Habsburg, Spanish Habsburg, Bourbon, Oldenburg/Vasa, Stuart) and use arranged marriages to secure treaties that are enforced by the GM, and to establish build sites through titles. The Payola rules allow for the control of neutral (German and Italian states) and non-neutral units on the board with bribes. With the variable strengths of units, players will know the position of other units on the board but not the strengths (unless revealed through communications or demanded in a treaty). Adds an element of "fog of war".

Another idea I would like to incorporate is that of objectives. In standard Diplomacy things sometime appear to happen spontaneously at the beginning. With objectives, a player can try to meet the objectives some time during the course of the game to improve chances of victory. Objectives would come in the form of public (known to all players) and secret (GM determined objective not revealed to the other players). An objective would be something as simple as securing an alliance with another player or dominating the movement of a neutral unit with bribes throughout the game, to something more difficult such as acquiring and holding a province by succession or by force. Victory is measured in victory points which are acquired throughout the course of the game and modified by the gain or loss of supply centers, making of treaties, and successful completion of objectives. Game concludes when a player reaches a certain number of victory points or by a time limit.

Anyhow, this is how it will go, and if I can get some responses from interested players, I will push this to completion, have a map ready, and all the rules laid out within several weeks or so; and then give it a go with GMing it.

Thanks for your attention to this.

Matthew

Games in Eternal Sunshine - diplomacyworld   (Apr 29, 2012, 8:35 am)
Hey folks, while I struggle through my usual awful play here, I run some games in my free monthly Diplomacy zine Eternal Sunshine. This is a free ezine, but in the old "postal" playing style in that it contains a bunch of other stuff besides games, and turns are once a month. More personality and comraderie, but less speed.

My game opening list right now includes Diplomacy, Youngstown IV, Narnian Wars, Aberration V, and Balkan Wars VI. Also some fun non-Diplomacy contests, and I'm offering a game of Kremlin.

If you'd like to see the latest issue, the direct pdf link is:

http://www.whiningkentpigs.com/DW/es64.pdf

Check it out and maybe join in the fun!

Oh, and don't forget we always need new material for Diplomacy World (www.diplomacyworld.net) where the next deadline is July 1.

Game of Thrones - Blueraider0   (Feb 16, 2012, 12:22 pm)
You swine! I've been working on such a variant, too. I even had a cool name for the article I'd submit to DipWorld "A variant of ice and fire." You ruined it!

Then again, this map is far superior to my own, which A) doesn't look this polished and B) is larger. My own map is sprawling, and so games would probably be very slow-going. Yours is tightly wound, which is great.

I do have some recommendations, however. We can chat here or talk on e-mail: blueraider0(at)gmail.com

1) Some variants allow fleets to journey up rivers that appear on the map. I think this variant would benefit greatly from that. Instead of having some of the rivers form the border, have some of them run through the provinces (I'm thinking primarily of the Mander, which extends from the Shields)
2) I started the game at 300 AL, which is appx when Robert dies. This is when the war really begins. Also, it ends any sort of confusion over who should control King's Landing. However, I really like how you dealt with it. I REALLY like the idea that King's Landing takes so much time to fully capture.
3) Targaryen starts with Dragon Stone? The part of me that loves Stannis is deeply saddened. Give them Myr, instead. I do agree Targaryen should begin the game with only two units, though.
4) Dorne should only have two units, too. And not as many centers in its immediate area. I feel Dorne would be the Italy of this variant, out of the way and biding their time until the time is ripe.
5) Interesting choice for Tyrell. I had, as the 7th house, the Eyrie, but it was very difficult to have it make sense. Tyrell is a good choice on your part.
6) If you give Dragonstone to Baratheon, you would probably need to divide Blackwater Bay into Blackwater Bay and Interior Black Water Bay, to prevent the Baratheon's from completely overrunning King's landing at the start.

I really like what you've got here, these are just my selfish suggestions because I've been working on my own for a while *shakes fist!* But I figure we can combine and make the best of both worlds. Either way, sign me up to play the testgame for sure!

Take care!

I've been working on this awhile (ever since I saw the maps in Game of Thrones and immediately my mind jumped to a Diplomacy variant), and am looking for any quick-glance outside perspectives/suggestions before I open up sign-ups for a gametest. I'd like to incorporate any last changes and get a game going by the end of the month, so please check it out! And feel free to express interest here too and you'll have a spot reserved. I know there's gotta be some fans of the series in DipCorp!

I'm pretty sure there's a bit of a division between web-client diplomacy players an older pbem crowd, but here is an implementation.

As it stands i don't think it has any special rules, just the basic (3d) geography, and eternal builds....

Treaty Variant - hapolley   (Oct 07, 2011, 6:13 pm)
Diplomacy Treaty Variant
=========================
Players are encouraged to make written treaties with other players in the game.

A.1 How Treaties are established!
A treaty sent to The Game Master by email from each party to the treaty will be assigned to a Provence on the board and named with it's start season, end year, and SC abbreviation, and added to a press list of treaties. Eg. Sp02Ber
Observers will only know that Germany has a treaty with another power which ends in Wt02.
A.2 Treaties with the games neutral power are allowed, but can not require the Neutral unit to make any military order. You can not make the treaty with the clause - if a Neutral power's unit is adjacent to my unit it will provide support. However the reverse is allowed. GM controls Neutral power and can declare a treaty violation.
A.3 A Treaty must have at least one military clause to be valid.
Eg. German unit Ber will not enter Pru.
A.4 If an SC assigned to one or more treaties changes Ownership. The new owner may tell the GM to publish all treaties assigned to his new SC. The GM will do so even if new owner is a party to one of the Treaties. It is all treaties published or none, selective publication is not allowed.
B.1 Treaties end!
Treaties must end on a Winter Season and have a maximum life of 3 Game years, starting with the games next season.
B.2 Treaty ended by violation!
A player may ask for a treaty to be ended do to a violation by one or more of the other parties to the treaty. He can not ask for treaty to be ended because he has violated the treaty!
B.3 Treaties end with game!
At end of game all treaties are published.
C.1 Treaty enforcement!
A military move or order which violates a treaty will not be interfered with by the GM!
C.2 If a player notifies the GM at the end of a movement season and before the next movement phase that a treaty has been violated and the GM agrees that the treaty has been violated, the GM will take the following steps:
C.3 He will publish the treaty in the press section of the results, and declare the Treaty null and void.
C.4 He will in the next move season use Engineer Civil Disorder Moves to negate any attacks on adjacent units by the treaty offenders.
D.1 The game starts out gunboat style, to get the name and email of a player you must have a treaty with him. If you can prove to the GM's satisfaction that a party to a valid treaty has passed on your name and e-mail to another player, you can end the treaty before it's expire date.
D.2 Send as attachment proposed treaties to GM who will forward treaties to countries listed in the email. Do not hide parties to the treaty in attachment as on most occasions GM will not read attachment.
D.3 Yes Press is welcome and these are Black Press games.

Realpolitik variant creation - help - FuzzyLogic   (Apr 12, 2011, 10:57 am)
Made some changes so it will launch... Will post here in case anyone else runs across similar problems..

I don't know about the Mac stuff. I ignored that folder.

* Had to remove the + from the name, it was invalid
* Txt file was too big. This needs to be a brief pointer to online rules, not full on rules within.
* Var file should only have the names, you had these listed w folders
* Rgn file had an invalid header line, this should point to the installed loc of the rgn file.
* Gam file was good, tho cleaned up the + in the name
* Your borders map was saved in 16M colors. Should be reduced to 8bit 256-color. I don't know how you got that to go thru the region tool.

Some suggestions...
* Dont use both Red and Crimson. For 10% of males they are too similar. You could use Tan instead of Crimson.

* I would suggest Charcoal instead of Black. Black on solid fill is too black.

* Reduce your bitmap by about 1/3. Right now you're 1532x1242, this should be no more than 850 high so it will fit on a standard screen (4:3 1280x1024, or 13:9 1400x900). In either case if you stay under 850 high, then you will not have to scroll the screen to see the full map. It sounds trivial, but it will annoy GMs if they are always scrolling.

* Consider giving each nation a unique fill. Again for those w less than a full complement of color-perceiving cones in their eyes, having the varying fills makes things easier to see. Sparse, Hatch, Quilt, and Random are nice.

* Add into the text file, something along the lines of... Play online at Diplomaticcorp. www.diplomaticcorp.com. (since this will ultimately get distributed around)

Voila, it works!
Smile
