Thanks Garry!  I was about to shoot you a message inquiring how I qualified based on the original list of "best of"s.  Didn't realize the LB pulled that much weight, or that I was so prolific in takeovers. Smile

Seeing as how I got into this tourney, maybe it's better if I "hire a proxy" to start the game, play one or two rounds, drop out, and I can ride into the established position. Smile

Thanks again!  Good Luck to you all!!!
Mike

Our 9th player is none other than Mr. Mike Hoffman who gets the invite for being the most active Light Brigade member in the past year and pretty darn close in the lifetime of the Brigade. The LB is a team of individuals who will take replacement positions in games when the GM is trying to backfill an abandon. This is key because typically these positions aren't always the greatest which leaves that person in a position of accepting a game that could hurt their rating. But that has never deterred Mike from charging in against all odds!

Sorry Mike!

Fall approached and left. Leaves changed colors and fell. Mike and Garry slacked off and watched time creep by and most importantly ALMOST missed our annual tournament du force, DCI.

How can this be you ask? Well I am sure it is somewhat related to Wizard magic gone wrong but then again anyone watching DC394 can understand that - none of my magic mojo has been working of late, especially in the games I have played in. But I digress...

Back to business.

For the newer contingent on the list, DCI is a champion's tournament of sorts. It pits the best of WB, the best of last year's DCI, the best of the player rankings and so on to crown one champion for 2011. This single game is one that doesn't carry a prize - it merely carries prestige because it is INVITATIONAL based on merit alone and pits you against the meanest, least trustworthy, nicest, craftiest players in DC. (note: for those new to DCI it is a single-game "tournament"Wink

A DCI title is like a Super Bowl ring or a World Cup trophy, few ever make the playoffs/knockout stages and fewer still get to be crowned the champ.

Surprisingly even yours truly doesn't have one! Insert comments here about the injustices of the world.

The good news: YOU are invited.

The bad news: once again players are stuck with the ever-annoying Garry Bledsoe as the GM for this year's Invitational (sorry for those of you enduring this again)

So...all of that said, allow me to formally invite you to DCI.

For this year's tournament we have a variant that still should keep the focus on good ol' Diplomacy: 1600. There are no special rules and very few nuances on the map that differentiate it from standard Diplomacy. You can find the variant info here:  www.dipwiki.com/index.php?title=1600

Note: this is a 9 player variant and we have invited 9. Please confirm to me your interest in playing by Dec 31st. I want to kick this game into high gear to start 2012. A couple of notes: we will run it roughly a week per major turn. When all 9 are in I will RANDOMLY assign powers...that keeps the tournament fair.

So how did this year's participants qualify? Well, here you go:

Adam S. - all around awesome GM and amazing guy but most importantly DCI09 champion; oh yeah, and ALSO DCI10 champion; that's right, back-to-back and

    REIGNING champion

Dave K. - winner of the WB2011

Dirk K.- an esteemed mod for our site, a runner-up in last year's DCI and this year's winner of the "hot win streak" position with two, yep two, solos this year

Mike S. - STILL the highest ranking player on the site in points, esteemed moderator, all around god

Gerry B. - the current highest ranking ACTIVE new player (based on provisional ranking)

Sun C. - the current ranking "survivor" title holder who is a player who has the most games in the last year with a survival without being eliminated

Brian D. - my vote for best new GM based on his management of 3 games this year including helping out in this year's WB

Mike B. aka Vegas - a player voted in as an at-large pick for being a honorable veteran who has re-activated his Dip game and has taken on GMing duties in several

games including in this year's WB (welcome back Vegas); for those who are curious, Vegas played in DC002, that's right the 2nd ever game on the site

So there you have it. Are you up for the challenge? Please respond by year-end (Dec 31st) to confirm that you are going to take part in this year's free-for-all. I look forward to being your humble guide on this battle royal.

dc340 DCI 2010 - Ukraine - untitled36   (Aug 02, 2011, 3:07 pm)
Hey all,

I've been out of town myself, so I just now got a chance to read through all of the end game stuff.

As has been said, my overarching alliance was the triple with Eire and Sicily. I enjoyed working with most people on my side of the board, and  Hungary, Israel, and I had some good stuff going on for a while. Then one turn, Hungary and Israel decided to send fleets west, which would have crippled my true ally in Sicily. I tried everything I could diplomatically to dissuade them, but to no avail. So I sent in moves to stab them to take pressure off Mike. But then at the 11th hour, Hungary and Israel decided not to go west after all, but I was away and could not change my orders in time. So to the board it appeared I stabbed them for absolutely no reason at all. This gave Byz a chance at life, and Hungary and Israel no longer trusted me, understandably. Still, this wouldn't have been too bad as the Eire, Siciliy, Ukraine trio was fairly well positioned at that time.

But then tragedy struck. Eire and Sicily had a huge falling out, and it was pretty ugly to watch. I tried desperately to patch up the relationship and played peacemaker to the best of my abilities, but in the end Sicily would have nothing to do with Eire. Dirk, while more amiable to the restoration of the triple than Mike, was still badly scarred by Mike's tirades, and not sure about the feasibility of a continued triple alliance. This was the biggest turning point in the game as it relates to me. I had just betrayed my two allies in Hungary and Israel for the sake of our Grand Alliance, and now the grand alliance was in shambles, and everyone near me saw me as a stab happy maniac. I tried my best to patch things up, and Israel and I had a great deal of potential. In fact, I had a lot of fun as his ally. But in the end, I think the fear of stabbing each other was too great. As I recall, Israel and did indeed have a falling out about him moving to Pis as he mentions. As I seem to recall, I think israel had essentially decided to throw the game to me (I don't recall if this was earlier, or later), but wanted to move to Pis. I didn't trust his motives, and that was a big falling out for us.

Thus, Ukraine, was left virtually ally-less except the ever-faithful Dirk and fell to its enemies.

I really enjoyed talking with almost every single one of you. Burgandy and I never really seemed to see eye to eye, but I had lots of good talks with Israel, Eire, Sicily, Byz, Hungary, and I'm probably forgetting someone somewhere along the line too. Thanks for letting me be a part of this madness. I feel like my moves and apparent wishy-washyness in regards to allies spoke poorly of my performance, but I hope this eog sheds a bit of light on the subject.

I'm taking a bit of a break from Dip at the moment, but when and if I pick the hobby back up, I would be honored to meet any of you across the board again!

John

First of all, congrats to Adam for winning this!

I think I played this game nothing short of horribly, pssibly the worst performance ever on my part. This was due to irl issues; I had just landed a new job that I worked 120% on, I had to travel quite a bit each day leaving a bit before 6 each morning and coming back a bit after 19-20 every day. This also stressed the relatinship I'm in, to the point where I really had to choose what to put my time into. I resigned across all boards, since there was no way I could do a good job in any game as well as all other things.

Also, this was a long time ago, and the two really memorable things I have is Dirk's sweet words of working with me against Burgundy, and Burgundys inital stubborness and general arrogance. That shaped my game more than anything to the point where me or Burgundy had to get eliminated. Dirk didn't provide support, and I was eventually gutted.

If I get into another DCI, I'll redeem myself of this horrible performance.

/ Mikael

My story might be the easiest.  I had a rough first 3 years and then didn't have many problems afterwards.  To start...

First, as always, thanks to the GM.  Garry, it's hard enough to GM any game of Dip, but it is even more difficult to GM a game when you have so many competitive players.  Your commentary is always lively, as I know players like to share the juicy details with you, but it is always fair and balanced.  Games drag and this one surely lasted, but the games don't ever last without a GM.  Thanks for taking the time for this one.

* I was leary about John in Ukraine.  His spot on the map was good and I just didn't get a good vibe from him in many if any of our conversations.

* I've played against Mikael a few times, including a few memorable games.  His first comment to me was, "I remember your brutal stab of me in dc85." So, I didn't figure I would get too much help from him.  He was very unresponsive in my emails and requests to him and when he did communicate, it was always near deadlines and not helpful.

* I sent a greeting email to Mike in Burgundy in Spring 1901.  I got a response back from him in Fall of 1906 or 1907.  Not sure why he thought I was useless.  But it might explain his tone in future emails and comments towards me.

* Chris and I didn't get to talk much.  He was pretty cordial in the beginning.  Then I got hammered and didn't need to talk to him.  Then I recovered and he got hammered and had better uses of his time too.  We finally started chatting again later on and even though he chose to help Dirk, he still tried to make peace along the way.

* Dirk, Dirk, Dirk... wow do I wish you wouldn't have grown so quickly.  I mean, you did what you had to do and that's probably all you could do, but it never gave anyone in HIZ a chance to even think of a solo.  We were all afraid that as soon one of us stabbed another, then you'd just start to roll on us.

* Of course, I've had many battles with Mike in Sicily.  The first two DCIs, many other "friendly" games.  FTF games.  We had a plan, but it didn't work out.  I owe him one because he is largely responsible for my survival.

* Israel frightened me with the corner position and I had never faced Joe on a board before, but the brotherhood of the Irish led to some good conversations.

* Adam at first glance was prodding and prodding for info, rumors, style of play... anything he could get his hands on to try and identify my style.  We never could agree on any which way to go.  I wasn't sure if he didn't know which way to go in the beginning, or if he wanted to go at me from the beginning.

Now with that rundown of the players, I worked mostly on my sphere before the first deadline.  As I said above, John tried to talk-up a good alliance.  Not sure when he turned on me or if it was all a ploy from the beginning.  Seeing Dirk's email, now I figure I never had a chance with John, but wasn't sure how that went down.  I decided to play slow in the beginning, and I remembered the difference between FTF and email.  With all the of time between deadlines in email, everyone wants to plan for 6 years down the road.  In FTF, the quick deadlines don't give a reason to commit to anything past the current turn or possible the succeeding turn.  I think that ticked off my neighbors... that I wouldn't commit to anything.  Being surrounded by 3 good players, I wanted to see how they would approach the game.  Well, they all approached me starting in Winter 1901.

I would love to know the thinking of the three fleets built by John?  Did Joe like that?  I'm sure Adam liked that.  Dirk liked that since they could only go south.  And with the strike in Spring 1902 by Joe, Adam and John... I thought I was gone.  So I begged MSims to help.  I said that there would be no resistance against Israel, as I would be destroyed after 1902 and John's fleets would be locked up for at least two years (since my defense was good enough in Spring 1902 to only allow for 3 of my 5 centers to be taken. Funny, right?). I knew I could lock off CON for at least another year against John because I was most pissed at him for the three fleet builds.  I knew that Mike didn't want Joe's fleets moving west, so I asked him to work on John for me.  Now knowing that the alliance was already there, it was easy to see how John worked with Mike to help me in Fall 1902.  Mike is the master diplomat and it worked.

Joe and Adam were stunned.  Joe even lost a center while I stayed at 5.  That turn went from Joe gaining one and me losing three (+4 for him) to me staying and him losing 1 (-1).  A five center swing and a lashing of an email to him and Adam... I'm not sure if that helped or hurt my cause.  But I took my chances.  Joe responded apologeticly and wanted to work things out.  I never closed that door because even after the great help from John, I still didn't trust him 100%.  Adam on the other hand was still upset/shocked at the last turn and really didn't commit to working with me until Fall 1903 when I think Joe may have said, "Hey, c'mon, he could probably help and we can get him out later."

The other thing I wonder aloud from the game was why did John go back to attacking me in Spring 1903?  I tried to talk with him and I ordered as I said I would (quite defensively and open to working with H/I/U in Fall 1903).  John changed courses again and Adam and Joe were good to their word.  From that point on (with a small hiccup going into Winter 1906 or '07), H/I/Z were locked from my perspective as working together did a lot more than every stabbing.

Some of the other EOG statements so far have asked why we didn't stab each other.  As I mentioned above, until we really beat Dirk back, there was still the fear that if there was a stab in the southeast, that among the fighting, even if two of the three banded together, Dirk would still have more centers at the end.  I specifically couldn't stab until I had John out of the game and had Joe and Adam pushed west.  By that turn, I think Joe was able to plop a unit back home for defense.  That one unit alone didn't stop me but when counting the board, even with good luck, I could only get to 21 without a struggle for the last centers for a solo.  Not knowing stalemate lines also prevented a stab.  Even at 21, I wanted to make sure I was in the draw.  Getting a draw after almost being eliminted in 1902/03, that was a moral victory for me.  And if there was a way to get a real victory out of the draw, it was worth it.  Plus, if I stabbed, who do I stab first?  In order to get to 27, I'd have to attach both Joe and Adam.  They seemed tight throughout the whole game, and if I stabbed either, I imagined that they would rally to beat me down, even at the expense of giving the DCI to Dirk.  It wasn't ever worth my risk not knowing my stab would be worthwhile.  (And I imagine it would have been the same way if Joe or Adam would have tried for a stab... it's not that we only valued the alliance, we all wanted to win.  If Joe would have stabbed, Adam would have rushed to my defense, otherwise he would have had no shot of winning.)  Adam is (and Joe would have been) a worthy champion and no stab would have done any of us justice.

I appreciate being invited to this DCI and enjoyed playing.  To all, I hope to see you on a board again soon.

-kevin

Well, it is final. Adam has managed to win back to back DCI's. Has that actually ever been done Mike?

Wow. Congrats. We have our ending and I am sure there will be some exciting EGP's to come. I will, at a later moment, give some comments.

For official purposes, the game ended in a 3-way draw - HIZ with Spain and Eire surviving. HIZ is also the official 123 order of finish.

More to come later. Apologies for the slight delay - I had to clarify one thing that I missed previously (in a vote - the affected party can clarify in their EGS if desired) AND I was traveling (driving) and could not get the turn done on time. I actually forgot about that when I set the deadline. Sorry.

Again - congrats to Adam (and to Joe and Kevin). Thanks for your patience throughout the game.

Witty comments to come.

Nice job Adam, truly!  To beat not just 10 of the best last year, but then 8 more this year.  That is quite a feat.

To IZ, I'm interested to hear why you gave up after all this time.  Hungary was pretty exposed to you last I saw.  I'll have to see the final map when it's posted online to get a better picture... maybe things had swung in the last couple years.

Congrats Adam - Who's in favor of renaming the DCI to just Adam's Invitational Come and Get Whooped Fest?  That's just... wow...

The DipWiki is updated, which shows the history of our 5 DCI's to date.  www.dipwiki.com?title=DC_Invitational.  Of which, of course Adam has won 2, and I sort of think that's only cuz he didn't play in the first 3 or it would have been a clean sweep.  Very Happy

The game actually started to break down earlier tho... when my secret allies of John and Dirk who were collectively running the board at one time stopped looking at the team and gave in to the temptation of greed (and per Dirk, perhaps some inexperience).  It's good to have allies, but always have to remember even your allies are still your enemy, as they will always look to themselves first.  This was no exception.  Dirk was quick to seal my fate by promising to help me survive, while moving units blatantly in my direction for the "so-obviously-coming-I-can't-believe-he's-telling-me-he's-not-going-to-take-it" stab.  He took it, and I was out.  I had no choice but to fall back, maybe survive in Spain or Africa, but Dirk made that impossible by not helping me into Madrid or keeping Joe out of Morocco.  I think we'll look back on this as a game-altering move, as Eire got nothing out of my death.  The Italian spoils went to Joe and Adam, and now the pass at Gibraltar is locked up.  Had Dirk entered the Med and established position, there might have been solo possibilities for him.

Kevin you never kept good on your promise to return the favor for me working so hard to keep you in the game when you were near eliminated in 01!

Not to blame my loss on anyone else, I made some severe mistakes in this game, most notably my own fatal flaw reared its head again, in that I like grand alliances.  I tend to be an alliancey player, and such has little place in this game especially against veterans.  Then mid-game I was severely pulled away from the game, tho the Sicilian decline had begun by this point.  I think it began when John flip-flopped twice in a row regarding whose side he was on in the south - stabbing Byz, pulling off, and stabbing him again.  That double stab permanently broke any possibility of a Sic-Ukr-Byz team, and pulled Kevin's focus off the south - leaving Joe free to focus 100% on me.

It has honestly been a long time since I played a game against some serious competition.  I've gotten so involved in running things at dc that I really stopped playing, and I think my Dip was very rusty for this game.  You all deserved better from me, which I'll have to provide sometime in the future...

I look forward to seeing where it goes from here... it looks like y'all have quite a game ahead of you still with many turns yet to come...

All,

Sorry for the short delay. I was waiting for one set up to the deadline (or I would have had the thing already done and waiting to hit send if no late orders came in). As it turned out, by the time I got that I was already on a plane and I got home late. Thus the lack of adjudication until today.

That said, we had another interesting season! It is with sorrow that we bid farewell to our second casualty - Mike Sims as Sicily. Moment of silence...

And still other interesting things happen - Ukraine loses another center, Burgundy's line becomes thinner, and - ho hum - Eire continues to grow.

We had NO retreats so let's move to Winter. Adjustments are as follows:

Byzantium Really Wants Odessa (?) But Runs Into A Traffic Jam As Most Units Converge
Burgundy Feeling The Pinch?

Ukraine Now Down To One

Can He Pull A Spain? Okay, Admittedly Calling It "Pulling A Spain" Is Premature Since Spain Isn't Exactly Out of the Woods

Eire - build 2

Hungary - build 1

Israel - build 1

Ukraine - remove 1

Let's get those by Monday the 21st at 6pm CDT.

Sorry all...I forgot that I had set separate retreats from Winter turn on this one (too busy thinking about WB!).

We have the following retreats:

Bur A Boh retreats to Sax

Bur A Lan retreats to Dij

Sic F Mor retreats OTB

Ukr A Mus retreats to Nov

That leaves us with the following adjustments for Winter:

Burgundy - remove 2

Byzantium - build 1

Sicily - remove 1 (I have already rec'd this Mike but of course you can still change)

Hungary - build 1

Israel - build 3

Spain - build 1

Ukraine - remove 1

For the record, that is NOT a typo - Spain does build another.

Since I am behind getting this out, let's hold for builds until Wednesday. We will then set our Spring 1909 for the following Thursday.

Thanks.

A Spanish build! No, seriously.
Armies dominate with one lone Fleet build
Two fleets get scuttled

Apologies for the delay. Work has had me too darn busy and I just could never get free to get this done.

Burgundy builds an army in Gda, Byzantium builds an army in Yal, Hungary builds an army in Aus, and Spain, YES SPAIN, builds an army in Tol. Israel builds a fleet in Cyr.

Sicily scuttles the Palermo and Algerian fleets.

We move to Spring 1908 next Monday at 6pm CST. That is Valentine's Day - get the orders in quick. Note: I will put out Spring 1908 but we will have to wait until Monday the 21st for our retreat results (most likely) since I will be out of the country. If we have no retreats we will move to Fall 1908 for Monday the 21st. I will probably NOT be confirming orders while I am away.

The F in WBS supported Rum-Ode, NOT Bul-Rum. Effect is that Odessa is dislodged AND disbanded. No retreat needed.
