Arn't there other options here? I mean this is getting ridiculous. Please don't allow a replacement that hasn't played a game yet. Perhaps that would help?
Here's what I propose:
Delete Austria from the game. It's home SC arn't counted for 5 years. That way his neighbors don't have free SCs to immediately go after. I guess France and England are the only ones that wouldn't benefit from this though.
Or, what if we all submitted orders for Austria? Whichever move order got the most would be what that unit does? We keep doing this until a replacement is found so we can keep the game going.
If a replacement is found soon please don't set the deadline for another week. I'd say 48-72 hours.

Hi All,
The way I see it, we have three options:
1. Find a replacement and allow a sufficient amount of time for him to meet and negotiate with everyone.
2. Continue the game using some ad-hoc, six-player rules.
3. Have someone propose a 6-way draw; everyone signs up for new games and hopes for the best.
I strongly favor option 1 and strongly disfavor option 2. If anyone disagrees, now would be the time to speak up. Feel free to e-mail me privately on this matter.
Cheers,
Matthew

Hey guys,
Just watching quietly here as I help out finding new players for games that need them... It's actually good (in a way) that the quitters weed out early. Since you have Matthew running your game, and not some automated system, when things like this come up, at least you know that he is going to find a good group, and the game will eventually be "on". If any of you committed players want to join a second game in the mean time, you're welcome to do so. You may have to ask a GM to put you in the game if you're new and the system only lets you into 1 game at a time. Just so you arent holding here waiting forever for a game to start.

I admit waiting for a replacement and giving them a week is the only fair system. It kind of sucks though.
I don't favor drawing this game because whatever game we go to next is likely to have the same problems. Is there a game series that is only for players that have completed at least one game?

Generally you will find some new players in any standard game (re001 on the open games page - it is typically the proving ground). Variants tend to draw vets. Many GM's run games that are invite-only. You'll discover these and other ways to get into higher caliber game as you get to know ppl.
Of those currently open,
* Ben's Sengoku game is a very experienced group, he's only allowing in reputable players. i.e. must have completed some games, and have minimal NMR's (not even looking at abandons, down to the NMR level). Join that one if you want to face some of the best. Complex game w some extra rules.
* I have my own personal Haven creation open, and to this one I'm not as strict as Ben, but I do have to at least have some conversation w all entrants to see if I think they're in it to the end.
* Charles' 1926 is another strong group, but may be full (not sure)
The standard game (re001) is the one game that we keep open for anyone to join. Others are in some cases more selective, other cases not - up to the individual GM.

Hi All,
The way I see it, we have three
options:
1. Find a replacement and allow a
sufficient amount of time for him to meet and negotiate with
everyone.
2. Continue the game using some ad-hoc,
six-player rules.
3. Have someone propose a 6-way draw;
everyone signs up for new games and hopes for the
best.
I strongly favor option 1 and strongly disfavor
option 2. If anyone disagrees, now would be the time
to speak up. Feel free to e-mail me privately on this
matter.
Cheers,
Matthew

Here's what I propose:
Delete Austria from the game. It's home SC
arn't counted for 5 years. That way his neighbors
don't have free SCs to immediately go after. I
guess France and England are the only ones that wouldn't
benefit from this though.
Or, what if we all submitted orders for Austria?
Whichever move order got the most would be what that unit
does? We keep doing this until a replacement is found
so we can keep the game going.
If a replacement is found soon please don't set the
deadline for another week. I'd say 48-72 hours.

I admit waiting for a replacement and giving them a week is the only fair system. It kind of sucks though.
I don't favor drawing this game because whatever game we go to next is likely to have the same problems. Is there a game series that is only for players that have completed at least one game?

Hey guys,
Just watching quietly here as I help out finding new players for games that need them...

I completely agree and I'd say that if anyone has doubts about their commitment to the game now would be the time to drop out. That way this should be the last replacement for a while.

Hey everyone,
Sorry for my tardiness. Another interesting turn.... we have a couple of retreats due, one from Russia and one from Italy. I'm making the deadline Tuesday, and there will possibly be some slow turns on my part for the next week. I'm taking a vacation and will be on a beach at a resort. The resort has internet apparently, but I'm not 100% sure how things will work.
Anyhow, I will do my best to get adjudications out for the autumn and winter turns in a timely manner.... in between rums.

Hi guys,
I trust you share my relief that after the recent turmoil, Matt Kelly, a player who hasn't NMRed once in 13 games, has kindly stepped forward and taken over the Swedish realm.
In the interest of getting the game on track again, I'm scheduling the winter dealine for Tuesday, 6 PM CET. Unless anyone objects, I'll from this point onwards not go with the past Wednesday/Friday routine, but rather try to adhere to a Monday/Wednesday schedule.
Liebe Grüsse,

Belated Introduction - Sean2010 (Feb 06, 2010, 8:26 pm) |
Hello, I'm Sean2010.
I joined not too long ago, and I'm presently playing for first game at the website.
I've been playing Diplomacy for about 13 years or so.
It all began after personal issues, and my uncle and I played a series of "Stratego" games. At first, my uncle began with the esteem boosting method of gameplay unaware that during my personal issues; a group of friends and I had been playing religiously. After this first couple of games, as my uncle puts it when he tells the story; I began getting cocky and he futily attempted knocking me down a peg. We had played something like 6 games that night, and I had bested him 4 out of 6.
On Sunday, I typically worked for my uncle doing odd jobs and such, and he began telling me about "Diplomacy" and how my oldest uncle, on my father's side, and him played 1 on 1 diplomacy games.
After a couple of games, I got my own board and had gotten into postal gameplay before I ended up playing an e-mail modern game, and ended playing at another internet site where I was told about this site.
When I told my uncle about it, his initial response had been, "I've created a monster".

DC290 GAME START!! - bobbarkerfan1 (Feb 06, 2010, 1:57 pm) |
Hey everybody. Hope you are all ready to go because this thing is under way! I was able to get everyone one of their top choices, so this should be a good game for everybody. And thank you for the input regarding deadlines. I will make sure to not have Monday deadlines, and in April, I will make all the deadlines between Tuesday and Thursday. For those of you anticipating to be absent for extended periods of time, let me know about a week in advance when you would like the deadlines "to be or not to be." With all of that being said, I wish you all the best of luck and hope this game turns out great!
DEADLINE:
The spring 1901 deadline will be ***Saturday, February 13th, 9:00pm EST*** I will make every deadline 9:00pm EST as to remain consistant with this game and my other game. If this is a problem for anyone let me know. I advise you, if you live in a different time zone, to find out when this is for you or to ask me so you know exactly when you need orders in by. I am almost always on time sending out adjudications, so if you think you will need extra time, let me know BEFORE the deadline and I'll extend it as need be.

Guys,
as it so happens, our replacement failed to submit orders. Despite my repeated warnings to him.
Such is the risk of taking on a newbie to the site.
Since I wanted to give him a chance to explain himself, I did not detail in my earlier note to you the reason for this delay. I was all set yesterday to get the adjucation out. Hoping for a last-minute arrival of Sweden's orders.
Believe me, this frustrates me as much as it does you.
I was hoping to have this game back on a smooth track. While I admittedly dragged my feet in getting a replacement, I don't see how I can be faulted here. I am committed to running this game smoothly to its conclusion. But if you guys want to end this in another way, that's your choice.

Jorge's memory serves me better than mine. Nick was involved in a truly massive number of games and simply couldn't keep up.
With regard to Nick, the original Austrian leader, my understanding is that Charles did not ask him to leave. There's little doubt that a player not talking in a game based on talking whose position is in the center of the map is doing the overall game a disservice. I was certainly not happy with it, and neither were at least some of the other players. When Charles inquired to Nick about his unusual lack of engagement, Nick replied that RL had overwhelmed him and he was sticking with the game only out of minimal commitment. Charles then offered to replace him, and Nick accepted, with very graceful apologies to all.

I'm glad to hear from Charles as to why there was no adjudication, which certainly isn't his fault. That said, after having revived myself for Gabriele, I'm not looking forward to another delay in a game seemingly headed for stalemate anyway. I would reluctantly prefer to end the game with a DIAS.

My two cents.
I have never resigned from a game, and have never gone absent.
As some of you know, a week or two ago I wrote Charles to say that I was on the verge of resigning from this game. That apparently prompted him to find a replacement for Sweden.
I am absolutely puzzled (and pissed) by Charles' newest message. This is a Winter Adjustment Phase. What the heck is there to adjudicate?
Please, talk to me about the merits of DIAS versus mass resignation from the game.

I do get confused by some of Charles' more enigmatic messages, and austria's leaving the game seemed to be because he wasn't playing as Charles wanted him too, in a communicative manner. I find non-communication unsocial, but not a reason for leaving a game by itself.

I do get confused by some of Charles' more enigmatic messages, and austria's leaving the game seemed to be because he wasn't playing as Charles wanted him too, in a communicative manner. I find non-communication unsocial, but not a reason for leaving a game by itself.

I agree with Mike's assessment. There's no need for us to resign - why spoil so many unblemished track records? It is within our rights as players to call for a DIAS. This vote seems to have passed, assuming our brand-new, yet-to-order Swedish leader doesn't object.
