DC240 / A&E 090205: The deadline is tomorrow night. I am not going to send individual reminders and confirmations this time, as I've only received orders from one person. Hopefully this means there is some intense diplom-ing going on... let's get those orders in!!!

A&E 090205 / DC240: The Spring 1765 retreat season has been adjudicated. The Archduke faced an intriguing decision, and decided to hold down the fort in Germania.

Our next deadline for Fall 1765 is Thu, Mar 26th.

We also have some very funny self-deprecating Danish press...

PRESS(Danish)

The Danish nation was shocked last spring to learn that one of its fleets had succeeded in an action. This almost unprecedented event has sparked demonstrations in the street, outrage in the press and anger in the corridors of power. It is rumoured that the king is even considering sacking the chief of naval staff over the affair, and there are reports that the admiral in charge of the fleet that mades it way from Copenhagen to the disputed province of Holstein has telegraphed his resignation.
A senior member of the government, speaking on condition of anonymity, had this to say: 'This is a a day of great shame for us. Something is indeed rotten in the state of Denmark when our navy can take it upon itself to not only sail out of port but fail to return in that same season. Further actions of this sort cannot be tolerated. We cannot let the millions of krone and the decades spent on creating the most incompetent military in Europe be wasted in this cavalier fashion. A failure to fail on this magnitude is breathtaking.'

A&E 090205 / DC240: The Spring 1765 season has been adjudicated. I live in Wisconsin, and the Badgers are playing in the NCAA tournament right now, so I'm going to keep this short. Quickly though, the stalemate has been unfrozen to some degree in the north, with Mecklenberg falling, and Russia succeeding in a creative attack on the Swedish fleet in the Gulf of Bothnia.

The Spring 1765 retreat deadline is Mon 3/23 (Austria and Sweden).
The Fall 1765 deadline is Thu 3/26.

Russia to Sweden and Denmark Norway:

Are either of you guys noticing that we're not the only ones growing here?

PRESS #2 (also Russian)

Russia to Prussia:

Since we are neighbors, it would be nice to communicate a little, given that we have many common areas of concern.

A&E 090205 / DC240: Not so fast, Archduke - NickHiggins   (Mar 12, 2009, 9:10 pm)
A&E 090205 / DC240: The big event this season was Britain's apparent change in policy towards Austria, with British units responsible for clearing Northern Europe of Austrian armies. There was finally a minor breakthrough in the Eastern European war, with Poland-Saxony capturing the Prussian SC in Konigsberg. Unfortunately for the Poles, this gain was offset by the loss of Dresden to Austria. The final area of conflict was the Med, with Turkey successful in gaining Algeria but stymied in Two Sicilies. In general, remarkably few supply centers changed hands, with a lot of stalemate and only 3 of 10 neutral SCs falling.

Here is our schedule:
Fall 1764 Retreat: Fri Mar 13th (needed from Prussia and Austria)
Winter 1764: Mon Mar 16th
Spring 1765: Thu Mar 19th

We have a couple sets of press. The first should be of great interest to everybody impacted by British moves this turn, while the second is... hmm, let's just say "classic".

PRESS

#1: British press
AP London: I'm back. My dad is doing wonderfully, and I thank you all for your patience and your helpful thoughts. It's great to be back, and now I get to enjoy my family and figure out how to catch up on three weeks worth of work.

London to Austria: Jorge, you're either stunned, not very surpised, angry, or you were looking for it (or told about it). Truth is, I saw you winning the game in two to three years if a concerted effort was not made immediately to slow you down. That is a testament to how well you've been as a diplomat in the early stages of the game, and how soft your east and north are due to unresolved conflicts. Now we just see whether I got the help I wanted, or I was betrayed.

London to France: Mike, you should be back in the game now. I really hope you ordered to HeW, and I hope you didn't bounce me in Brest. If all went as planned, you're in great shape to defend your new gain.

London to Spain: It seemed like we were talking the same language, Isaac. Now I find out if you trusted me to be able to deliver the goods.

London to Turkey: Welcome to Algeria (hopefully). If you landed, Jorge might have to fight on more than one front.

London to Denmark: No change in English tactics in the north...just a change in strategy in the south/central. You can still expect an empty North Sea.

Press #2: Danish
I was talking to a leader of another nation,
When he raised the simple notion of proxy delegation,
If I would place our forces under joint command,
Then everything would work out perfectly as planned,

It was the best solution to the issue of mistrust,
And would for past transgressions additionally be just,
At least, that is what this leader said, and while I sat and thought,
It struck me that in future this could be how wars are fought,

If all sides were commanded from one place,
There would no confusion and it would not be a race,
Armies would march and navies sail,
And no command would ever fail,

If one gave the orders for the units of another,
Then all forces would act to each as if a brother,
And peace or war one from t'other could not be told,
At this I was almost - almost - sold,

But Diplomacy is a game based in deceit,
And if one cannot lie then that does defeat,
The very point and what makes it great,
Proxy orders? Masturbate ...

A&E 090205 / DC240: map correction - NickHiggins   (Mar 06, 2009, 11:10 pm)
A&E 090205 / DC240: There is a correction to make in the adjudication. It is relating to a message received from Frank's Blackberry, which I could not comprehend and replied with a "huh?" e-mail. My confusion was due to the double usage of "And" as both a conjunction and province name on our map (Andalusia). Upon further analysis, it is quite clear what Frank intended, and so I am correcting the adjudication. The result is that F Por - Gib changes to F Por - And, which succeeds, enabling A Leo - Por to succeed also. Sorry for being a bit dense.

The adjudication is copied below, with the changed orders in bold.

A&E 090205 / DC240: Spring 1764 adjudicated - NickHiggins   (Mar 06, 2009, 9:04 pm)
A&E 090205 / DC240: The Spring 1764 season has been adjudicated. The late party was our Prussian player Mark, who apologizes for missing the deadline.

While I cannot reveal the details, the Diplomacy Point adjudication this season was especially interesting, as clearly there was some very spirited diplomacy to gather support for certain actions. There were a lot of nice tactical moves, with the most impressive being Russia's risky (but correct) defensive strategy to counter the creative Scandinavian attack. Looking elsewhere, action heated up in the Med, while the Prussian-Polish war continues to be a stalemate.

There is no Spring Retreat. Our next deadline is Thu Mar 12th for Fall 1764. Before the adjudication, we have some press... I feel like I'm missing one set of press, but can't find another one, so let me know if I left yours out. Sorry if that is the case.

Press #1 (British)
Press: AP London: Hospitals still suck. Thanks for being patient with me. Frank

Press #2 (Russian)

Russia to Prussia: If you are not too busy, there is much of common interest we could and should discuss.

Russia to United Kingdom: Impressive work, making Britain into a power in Hanover.

A&E 090205 / DC240: no adjudication (missing o... - NickHiggins   (Mar 05, 2009, 11:32 pm)
A&E 090205 / DC240: Unfortunately, I have not received an order set from one player. Sad This is why we send in prelims! Now is a good time to review my procedure for this situation.

1st offense - 24 hour grace period; 48 hours after that to reestablish contact; after 72 hours, expulsion
2nd offense - automatic NMR, 24 hours to reestablish contact, then expulsion
3rd offense - automatic expulsion

Typically when the situation results in a player expulsion, I will extend the same deadline rather than have the new player take over after an NMR.

Since this is a PBEM game, it is impossible to enforce any rules on diplomatic contact, and so diplomacy can continue like normal during the next 24 hours. You can treat it like a deadline extension, with more time to negotiate and send in new orders if desired.

Also, I do not reveal the name of the player until the adjudication. This (mostly) prevents any players from taking advantage of a potential NMR.

Sorry to those of you eagerly awaiting the adjudication... Nick

Sorry Gentlemen.

I am still in Southern California with my father. The news we received from heart tests yesterday was wonderful, and he will only have to have the aortic valve replaced. It still means open heart surgery, but since there was no disease to the actual heart, we are all in good spirits.

However, this is the FIRST time since Sunday that I have been able to get on the web on my computer. As such, I plead with you to continue to use my fmartin(at)psomas.com account for e-mail, as I think it's highly likely that I will not be consistent in logging on to my surewest account.

Thanks for your patience. I will try to review and respond to e-mails already written in the next few minutes, and hope to engage in dialogue throughout the next two days on my crackberry.

A&E 090205 / DC240: There was high drama all over Europe, and it was clearly a very active diplomatic season. The Prussian army left Hanover of its own accord, and found a new home in Mecklenburg. Spain succeeded in their bold capture of Marseille, while their Austrian ally had the most success with 3 gains. The Baltic powers were frustrated, with Denmark-Norway, Sweden, and Russia all not gaining a SC in year 1. I was interested to see Denmark's audacious strategy of going for Koenigsberg, although it did not quite meet with success. Turning to the subject of my other article, Turkey clearly read it, as they implemented my strategy of convoying an army to Tunis in Fall 1763 as discussed in the "Master of the Maghreb" section. We'll see how it goes! Finally, Frank's performance this fall was the most impressive, particularly given the circumstances. A potentially disastrous situation was salvaged, with Hanover retained and both Portugal and the Netherlands gained. Again, my best wishes go out to Frank and his father.

Here is our deadline schedule:

Fall 1763 Retreat: Fri 2/27
Winter 1763 Adjustment: Mon 3/2
Spring 1764: Thu 3/5

We need one retreat order, for the French army in Marseille.

I'm very happy to see another rich set of press. That will be followed by the adjudication. Also, I have attached a History file that is an Excel document. It contains past seasons, standings, and a number of other summary exhibits. If you are not able to open the file, do not worry, as it is not necessary to the game.

1.) I am hoping that 'multiple failures of diplomacy' on my part will not lead to anything similar to the battle described here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Copenhagen_(1801) And if such a battle is to be fought, 1801 sounds like a good time for it ...

2.) As controller of the Baltic, I deem that taxes will be imposed upon all cities touching that sea. We expect diplomacy point patronage from those with interests here, and if the City of Mecklenberg still remains free, we intend to make to make it very expensive.

There are macros inside the file. However, they are not usable without the companion GameEngine file, which contains all of the "guts" of the adjudication engine. So, you can turn macros off, as they don't do anything.

The Swedish Ambassador to Russia approached the media with a statement addressing outlandish Russian accusations of aggression on Sweden's behalf. "Of course these half-truths should be taken with a grain of salt. It was Russia's own attempted advance into the Gulf despite fervent requests from Sweden's diplomatic corp to do otherwise that prompted Sweden's rush to her own self-defense. Coupled with numerous reports of Russian perfidy in regards to Sweden's best interest have left Sweden in a position where pre-emptive invasion was sadly necessary. Should Russia choose to control her "cubs" and behave in a more civilized fashion then Sweden would be more willing to keep to her rocky, meatless shores."

A&E 090205 / DC240: The Spring 1763 Retreat season has been adjudicated. The British army in Hanover has retreated to Holstein. Our next deadline for Fall 1763 is Thursday Feb 26th at 10 pm USA Eastern time. Mike has graced with some more press as well...
Press:

AP London: "Honest to God truth, I didn't know Prussia was a separate European Country, or that they had an army!" stated an exasperated Lord Frank on the shame of the Hanoverian 1st Brigade's startling defeat in the lowlands. The monarchy is facing some significant heat from critics, wondering how the navy could take control over the entire seas around the island, and surprise the French off the coast of Brest, while the lone English army was not only sitting idle, but being pushed north at an astounding pace. Lord Granite is particularly feeling the heat, as word from the embassy in Berlin (which was burned to the ground by rioting Prussians) was that Lord Granite never made an appearance prior to the onset of conflict, nor sent word that any talks with Prussian ambassadors were to take place.

When asked what damage control was being done with regard to the situation, Lord Frank paused, then answered quietly. "Well, we have begun discussions, but they are probably not as friendly as they may have been if we had talked before our army was routed to the Holstein Peninsula." Lord Frank was quick to point out that diplomatic efforts had been very fruitful on other fronts. "We've secured a tentative peace with Austria, and our neighbors to the east in Denmark and Norway have been absolutely smashing in our time of need."

While Lord Frank would not elaborate on plans for the fall campaign, he did give some hints. "Our army will not be embarrassed again. We will enlist the support of all who would help us reclaim what is ours. If the Prussian Government wishes to be included in that group, we are willing to let bygones be bygones. Water under the bridge. No sense crying over spilled milk. We'll give 110% effort, and God willing, we will reoccupy Hanover without undo pause. Oh...we're also going to save the repressed people of Brest."

A&E 090205 / DC240: Spring 1763 adjudicated, a... - NickHiggins   (Feb 19, 2009, 9:19 pm)
A&E 090205 / DC240: The Spring 1763 season has been adjudicated. This has been a fascinating first season, with some very active diplomacy leading to some interesting opening moves and alliances. I'm not sure what Le Roi in France did to upset his neighbors, but the level of coordination demonstrated by the anti-French alliance was very impressive. Prussia managed to pop the British army in Hanover, and Sweden won the battle for the Gulf of Bothnia. In the east, nobody moved to Lithuania, which is highly unusual. With my articles on Denmark-Norway and Turkey, I was closely watching their opening movies, and I'm anxious to see how their strategies unfold.

We need a retreat order for one unit, the British army in Hanover. Here is our upcoming schedule:

Spring 1763 Retreat: Fri Feb 20th (or as soon as I receive them)
Fall 1763: Thu Feb 26th
Fall 1763 retreat: Fri Feb 27th
Winter 1763: Mon Mar 2nd
Spring 1764: Thu Mar 5th

Now we have some voluminous press from our British player, Frank Martin. I strongly encourage press, whether it is of the strategic or amusing variety. Thanks Frank!

Press:

England to Norway: As you can see, I¢m looking for growth somewhere else. Thanks for allowing me use of the North Sea pond.

England to France: Sorry Mike. I had to pick a target, and truth is, your neighbors wrote and coordinated a lot more. It sounds like you¢re very busy, but one has to consider these things when looking to pick an ally to last for a longer period than just the immediate. I hope you understand.

England to Spain: If all went well, you should be positioned to sack Marseilles. Kudos.

England to Austria: If all went well, you supported my southern neighbor. That selfless move will be rewarded shortly.

England to Turkey: I¢m thinking you will be pleased to see no English presence in the Med. Hopefully this will open talks.

England to Prussia: You never wrote. I¢m fearful that Hanover may have been popped. If not, then please engage us in future talks.

England to Poland: As agreed, I left HeW for your use. I hope I don¢t regret that move.

England to Russia: Hi, Nathan!

England to Sweden: Having played Sweden thrice, I don¢t envy the start. Here¢s hoping you were able to negotiate a fruitful treaty with at least one of your neighbors.
