(DC 326) Gumball - Fall 1907 Results - Corrino   (Aug 11, 2010, 9:18 pm)
Go, go, Gumball!

You guys have done it again! Just at the time when most Diplomacy games would be looking at one or two powers starting to dominate the board, you guys are actually becoming MORE evenly balanced.  I'm thinking I'd better reconsider my Christmas vacation plans because this game is still going to be playing.

Three powers entered 1907 at three SC.  At the end of the year, two of those three are now up to four, and the third is holding his own.  Meanwhile, our board leader (Germany) is knocked back to seven dots.  I'll have another cup of parity, please!

Highlights of our Lucky 7th year:
Germany and Austria, our two biggest powers with 7 SC each, continue to jostle along their mutual border.  Each one forces one of his
opponents units to retreat.  Is this a war or a square dance?  One step forward, one step back, do-si-do with red and black!
Russia finally convinces England to take Norway away from the Germans.  But what's this?  It looks like Germany may be trying to make peace with the White Army.  Will the Tsar give him a listen or are past injuries still too sore to ignore?Turkey wins the lottery.  Okay, not the MEGA-MILLIONS, but certainly the daily numbers.  Not only does he outguess the A-I team and take back Smryna, but his lonely fleet in Sevastopol gets to remain unmolested in that port through the coming Winter.  Mark that down as +1 for the Sultan.England has a successful turn, too, taking Norway away from the Germans, who no doubt expected one or both of those English fleets to sail to North Sea.  That's a nice +1 for the Brits, too.
By the way, it looks like that
German offer to give Belgium to the French is off the table.  Losing a dot does tend to cut into one's charitable impulse.Italy can't help but say the naughty words as his dual front war is producing dual doo-doo.  No progress in France and going backward in Turkey.  I expect there will be some hard questions being asked in Rome this Winter about the direction this war is taking.
And our last note is a doozy.  Seriously, you might want to sit down for this one.  France moves a unit!  No really, he does.  Look at F Portugal now out in MAO.  It wasn't there before, I'm sure.  Better watch out, Europe!  Here it comes!  Vive La Republique!
Orders as resolved.  Please check 'em and let me know ASAP if there are any errors.

(DC 326) Gumball - Spring 1907 Results - Corrino   (Aug 04, 2010, 9:06 pm)
Hi Players,

Here we are starting our seventh year.  Do you know that I've seen gunboat games in which someone has soloed in 1907?  I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that that isn't going to happen here in Gumball.  Too many sticky situations.  Too many blown opportunities.  Too many bubbles bursting in people's faces.  (Are you following my drift?  I hope so.  I'm running out of subtle here.)

Common wisdom often says that you play for position in the Spring and dots in the Fall.  I'd say that pretty well describes our moves this season.  At least, it describes our attempted moves.  Successful in a couple cases (Germany into Galicia, Austria into Tyrolia) and unsuccessful in a few more (Germany blocked from
Yorkshire, Italy blocked from MAO and Constantinople).

I also note that we're still seeing folks trying to help other folks, but finding it difficult to make the connection.  Will they try again, or are will they turn to other options?  Love unrequited only lasts so long, you know.

RETREAT NEEDED:  Austria army Galicia may retreat to Budapest, Warsaw or off the board.  Please get that retreat in to me within the next 24 hours.

NEXT DEADLINE:  Fall 1907 is due next Wednesday, August 11, at 8 pm Eastern US time.

Cheers,
Chris

(DC 326) Gumball - Winter 1906 Results - Corrino   (Jul 30, 2010, 7:18 am)
Hi Players,

Well, even with most of an extra day I still didn't receive retreats from the England, so I'll have to go to the DC House Rules to determine out his two disbands.

On a Winter turn an NMR (NBR/NDR) would mean that if the player was
building - the builds would be waived and if the player was disbanding,
units would be disbanded under the following rules Units furthest from the nearest home center before units closer to the nearest home centerUnits not in a supply center before units in a supply center if equidistant from homeFleets before armies if still no unique unit selected per aboveAlphabeticalRule 1 gives us our first disband of F Mid-Atlantic Ocean.  All other units are equidistant from a home center.
Rule 2 - No help.  All units are outside SC.
Rule 3 - No help.  All units are fleets.
Rule 4 - Our choices are:  North Atlantic Ocean, Wales, English Channel and Norwegian Sea.  EC is first alphabetically and therefore the "winner."

So...

England:
Remove F Mid-Atlantic Ocean
Remove F English Channel

Germany:
Build A Berlin

Russia:
Build A Warsaw

NEXT DEADLINE:  Spring 1907 is due Wednesday, August 4, at 8 pm
Eastern US time.

Cheers,
Chris

p.s.  For those who may be wondering, a player is only charged with an official NMR if he misses a Spring or Fall turn.

(DC 326) Gumball - Fall 1906 Results - Corrino   (Jul 27, 2010, 8:02 pm)
Hi Players,

Thanks to everyone for helping me out by getting in your orders a day early.  Much appreciated!

Our lead story this year has to be the decline of the once mighty English Empire.  They're not giving up, by any means, but are still suffering the ill effects of that unfortunate NMR in 1905.  Nevertheless, as bad as things are right now for the Brits, they can be grateful that things aren't even worse, thanks to a truly embarrassing blunder by their German arch-enemies.  What do you think the Kaiser will do when he learns that while his army was waiting on the Belgian beach, his North Sea fleet was looking for them in Yorkshire?  Yes, THAT Yorkshire!  I'd say there is a German admiral about to be marooned behind a desk forever (if he's
lucky).

In other highlights:

.  You may have heard that rubber comes from South America.  Not so, Sunshine!  It's a Russian commodity now.  Just check out the action in Sevastopol and Warsaw, where a total of 5 armies from 4 nations played bounce-back.  You won't hear the Tsar complaining, though, not with his country on the ... wait for it... rebound.  Put the Cossacks down for a build AND, amazingly, a open SC in which to put it.

. Offense fills the seats, but defense wins championships!  If that's true, I think I'm going to put 5 bucks on the stubborn Turks.  Another year with too many enemies and too few friends, but the Sultan still manages to hold on to what he has.

. Could Turkey's modest success this year be the result of his finding a way to jam the psychic connection between A and I?  I don't know, but our Red-Green team definitely misfired this time.  It's ONE if by
land, TWO if by sea, guys....  Regardless, A-I seem determined to stretch their partnership from sea (Black) to shining sea (Atlantic).  If only that pesky German would stop trying to get into Tyrolia.

. Meanwhile, in France, nothing much happens, really.  MAO gets knocked back, but will England be able to follow up on that positional advantage, given he's going to lose two units?  Relations with his other neighbors are similarly inconclusive.  Italy doesn't attack -- but he doesn't go away, either.  And Germany tries to help out -- but can't get out of his own way.  Ah, well.  Hemlines in Paris are heading up over the ankle and it was a perfect year for the Beaujolais.  C'est bon, n'est pas?

RETREATS:  One.  French fleet MAO needs to find a new place to be.  Options include Gascony, Portugal, and the bottom of the ocean.  Please let me know your decision as soon as possible,
Mr. Le President, or your fleet will automatically be disbanded.

ADJUSTMENTS

Austria:   Supp  7 Unit  7 Build  0
England:   Supp  3 Unit  5 Remove 2
France:    Supp  5 Unit  5 Build  0 ... or build 1 if F MAO is retreated OTB by either design or negligence.
Germany:   Supp  8 Unit  7 Build  1
Italy:     Supp  5 Unit  5 Build  0
Russia:    Supp  2 Unit  3 Build  1
Turkey:    Supp  3 Unit  3 Build  0

WINTER orders will be due by 12 noon Eastern US time (1600 GMT) on Thursday, July 30.  If you wish, you may make your adjustments conditional upon the location of the French retreat.

Cheers,
Chris

Hey Gumballers,

First, thanks to everyone for getting your orders in on time.  It seems as a group you're pushing it later and later, which makes me sweat a little bit, but as long as you come through in time I'm happy.

Now, what's going in Europe this fine Spring season?

Can you say "Bounce?"  Can you say "bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce?"

By my reckoning, there were 14 units ordered to move.  Only three of them succeeded.  Here's a handy and informative chart to illustrate my point.

Country (Units That Moved / Units Ordered to Move or Support a Movement )

Austria    ( 1 / 4 )
England    ( 1 / 3
)
France    ( 0 / 0 )
Germany    ( 2 / 2 )
Italy    ( 0 / 2 )
Russia    ( 2 / 2 )
Turkey    ( 0 / 1)

Totals    ( 5 / 14 ) = 36 %

Now, what do we learn from this?  Mainly that Chris has too much time on his hands.  But, if we combine that insight with the full set of orders revealed below, we can take pleasure in finding a handful of shiny, wisdomy nuggets.  To wit:

. Russia had his most successful turn in a long time.  Enjoy it while you can, Tsar.
. France is very patient?  (Um, Monsieur le President, I think you need to move that lever there to shift out of neutral.)
. Austria & Italy are scary psychic, but still can't pull of the convoy.
. Our English king does not value the North Sea as highly as some might expect.  Let the guessing games
begin!
. Germany wants to be helpful; he just hasn't quite got the hang of the whole "contiguous spaces" concept.
. It's never a bad day to fruitlessly attack Spain, regardless of how many times you've tried it before.

RETREATS NEEDED:  None, amazingly.

NEXT DEADLINE:  Fall 1906 is due next Wednesday, July 28, at 8 pm Eastern US time.  Not that you have to wait that long.  Hint, hint.

Please check the orders posted and let me know ASAP if any mistakes have been made.  Play on!

Cheers,
Chris

(DC 326) Gumball - Replacement England sought - Corrino   (Jul 20, 2010, 8:09 am)
Hi Gumballers,

I still have no orders or any other contact from our missing English king.  I believe he was last seen chasing American divorcees around the grounds of Balmoral.

So... we wait.  I have submitted the "paperwork" to get us a replacement.  Hopefully it won't take too long.

I will set a new deadline once we have the new player BUT... what are you folks waiting for?  Turn in your orders now and beat the rush!  It's not like you have to wait to swap messages with the new guy.  He or she will be just another faceless antagonist, trying to take what is rightfully YOURS.  Are you going to stand for that?!  Of course not.  Send me your orders!

Cheers,
Chris

p.s.  If the wayward English king should see this message and contact me immediately, expressing sufficient humility and contrition (and sending ORDERS!), I expect we could move past this faux pas and give him a second chance.

(DC 326) Gumball - Winter 1905 Results - Corrino   (Jul 17, 2010, 7:51 am)
Hi Players,

Armies come (for Austria and Germany) and armies go (for Russia and England).  In fact, R and E both failed to submit adjustment orders so the DC house rules come into effect and thus the units furthest from home are removed.  A very easy calculation in both cases.

Here is a link to the rules, just in case you're interested:  http://www.diplomaticcorp.com/info.php?type=houserules

The results:

Austria:
Build A Budapest
Build A Trieste

England: (NMR)
Remove A St Petersburg

Germany:
Build A Berlin

Russia: (NMR)
Remove A Piedmont

NEXT DEADLINE FOR ENGLAND:  Monday, July 19, at 8 pm
Eastern US time.  If I do not have English orders for Spring 1906 by this time I will seek a replacement.

NEXT DEADLINE FOR EVERYONE ELSE:  Spring 1906 orders are due Wednesday, July 21, at 8 pm Eastern US time.

Cheers,
Chris

(DC 326) Gumball - Fall 1905 Results - Corrino   (Jul 15, 2010, 6:56 pm)
Hi Players,

I regret to say that we have our first NMR of the game, as even an extra 24 hours were insufficient for our England to submit orders.

Highlights of the season, OR "How the English NMR Affected Everyone"

. England NOT attacking MAO allows France to defend Spain from Italy and his (surprise?) friend, Russia.

. England NOT attacking Moscow deprives Russia of a much-needed bounce and a missed opportunity to regain Sevastopol.  A lucky break for the Turks, though, who manage to keep themselves on 3 SC and 3 units, a much stronger defensive position.

. Don't think the English will be receiving any love letters from the Austo-Italian axis.  Good fortune for France and Turkey is not received so warmly in Vienna and Rome.

. Germany,
well, they might be the exception to this rule.  I can't quite see where the NMR affected Germany that much since he was pretty impervious to anything England had to offer.  The Germans pick up another SC in Scandinavia without breaking a sweat.

Check out all the details below, and let me know ASAP if you spot a mistake.

RETREATS:  None required.

ADJUSTMENTS:  See chart following the orders.  Given that we're a day late, let's make these due by Saturday morning.  That's July 17 at 8:00 a.m. Eastern US time (12 noon GMT).

IMPORTANT NOTE:  The English player needs to reestablish contact with me ASAP.  If no adjustment is submitted, I will use the standard rules to choose which unit will be disbanded.  If he missing the adjustments, and has not contacted me by MONDAY, I will seek a replacement.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Players,

It took a little while but you all got orders in before I got home so we're all good on that score.  Don't get used to it, though.  We're back on our regular schedule going forward.

Highlights of the Spring:
. England asserts her control of the waves, holding or reclaiming all the key water spaces around the British Isles, despite a nice psychic connection between France and Germany.
. Italian attacks on Turkey and France are thwarted, though one might say that unsupported attacks on Spain and Marseilles are really just love taps.
. Rumania changes hands again.  Of course it's not Fall yet, but maybe someone should think about putting in a Six Flags franchise?
. Turkey helps Russia (inadvertently?) by bouncing the English in
Moscow.  Think that'll make up for four years of war?  Hmmm... me neither.
. Looks like those German units have decided that the party in Russia in the East is just too much fun to ignore, but we can't quite tell which country or countries will be gaining the "pleasure" of their company in the Fall.
. And our favorite wandering Cossacks, somehow sensing that they have overstayed their welcome in Tyrolia, duck into Piedmont just in time to avoid a fight.  Enjoy your sightseeing, boys!

RETREATS:  Two retreats, but only one choice for each, so they have been made automatically (see below).  If France or Turkey would like to disband those units instead, they have 24 hours to let me know and I'll post the correction.

NEXT DEADLINE:  Fall 1905 is due Wednesday, July 14, at 8 pm Eastern US time.

Cheers,
Chris

Hey Gumballers,

I have to say that didn't quite live up to the promise of the Spring turn.  Seems like in Spring all the attackers guessed right, and this time it was the defenders.  Naturally a good GM such as myself values chaos above all else, so you can see where I might be a little disappointed.  Not that it was a bad year.  We had:

. Turkey taking Sevastopol from Russia.
. Russia taking Rumania from Turkey.
. England taking St. Petersburg from Russia.
. Germany taking Denmark from England.
. Italy taking Smyrna from Turkey.
. Austria taking Venice from Italy.
. ... and France in the corner twiddling his thumbs.  C'mon Froggie, baby, you gotta get with the scene!

RETREATS:  None.  Isn't that nice?  No one likes
to retreat.  Now we can move straight to...

ADJUSTMENTS:  Due tomorrow.  That's Thursday, July 1, at 8 pm Eastern US time.  I'm going on vacation Friday morning, so I'm telling ya those orders better be here on time!

Ownership:

Austria:   Budapest, Bulgaria, Serbia, Trieste, Venice, Vienna.

(DC 326) Gumball - Spring 1904 Results - Corrino   (Jun 23, 2010, 7:44 pm)
Go, Go, Gumball!

I have to applaud you all on another very entertaining turn.  Is it as much fun to play as it is to watch?  I hope so.

This season's highlights include:
. Turkish magic.  "I wave my hands like so, and 'Poof!'  The Russian fleet has disappeared!"
. Russia, meanwhile, is studiously unimpressed.  "Shut up and give me back Rumania," says he.
. The French army in Brest challenges their mates in Piedmont to surmount the Alps.  "No thanks!" reply the sensible soldiers.  "It's back to Marseilles for some R & R."
. The English admirals rotate their fleets counter-intra-sideways-sort-of, while the marines chase reindeer into Finland.
. German units adopt a similar fire-drill approach, but at least in their case they
stumble into Copenhagen.  "Give us a kiss, Fraulein Mermaid."
. Italy lands a fleet in the Near Eastern port of Smyrna, while back home the canals of Venice host their "friends" from Austria.  "Just protecting you from the Frusskies, buddy," offers the not-terribly-abashed Archduke.

I can't wait to see how this will resolve in the Fall.  Play on!

Chris

(DC 326) Gumball - Autumn 1903 - Corrino   (Jun 17, 2010, 6:39 am)
Turkey has confirmed the auto-retreat to Armenia, which means we have zero adjustments due for this Winter and you can start working on Spring 1904.  Those orders are due by next Wednesday, 6/23, at 8 pm Eastern US time.  If I have seven sets of final orders by Tuesday I will adjudicate early.

(DC 326) Gumball - Fall 1903 Results - Corrino   (Jun 16, 2010, 8:46 pm)
Hey Gumballers,

A lot of pushing and shoving this turn, but not much in the way of actual accomplishments.

Turkey had the most going on -- losing a fleet in the Aegean, recapturing Rumania from Russia, and then losing Bulgaria from behind to the opportunistic Austrians.  Elsewhere in Europe the most we could manage in terms of excitement were a couple of bounces.

Game notes:
- The western trio of E, F and G failed to move a single unit.  Not any of them.  That's 16 units all sitting in exactly the same spots as they were at the end of Spring.  No SC gained, no SC lost.  In my experience, I'd have to call that unprecedented this early in a game.
- Russia beats a tactical retreat from Rumania, resecuring his home province of
Sevastopol.
- Austria and Italy continue to work well together.  Austria saves Venice from the wandering bear, while Italy establishes total dominance of the Eastern Med.

RETREATS:  Turkish F Aegean has no options for retreat.  Poof!  Turkish F Sevastopol has only one option, Armenia.  The retreat has been made automatically but, as always, the Sultan may choose to disband that unit instead.  Just let me know ASAP so I can pass it on to the rest of the group.

SC Ownership at the end of 1903:

Austria:   Budapest, Bulgaria, Serbia, Trieste, Vienna.
England:   Denmark, Edinburgh, Liverpool, London, Norway, Sweden.
France:    Brest, Marseilles, Paris, Portugal, Spain.
Germany:   Belgium, Berlin, Holland, Kiel, Munich.
Italy:     Greece, Naples, Rome, Tunis, Venice.
Russia:    Moscow, Sevastopol, St Petersburg,
Warsaw.
Turkey:    Ankara, Constantinople, Rumania, Smyrna.

Adjustments:

Austria:   Supp  5 Unit  4 Build  0  ... no home SC free for building
England:   Supp  6 Unit  6 Build  0
France:    Supp  5 Unit  5 Build  0
Germany:   Supp  5 Unit  5 Build  0
Italy:     Supp  5 Unit  5 Build  0
Russia:    Supp  4 Unit  4 Build  0
Turkey:    Supp  4 Unit  4 Build  0 ... or Build 1 if F Sevastopol retreats off the board.

NEXT DEADLINE:

Cheers,

Chris

Hey there, Gumballers!

Thanks to all for getting their orders in on time.  So far we're perfect with zero NMR's.  Keep it up!

Spring 1903 saw an interesting mix of daggers and dancing.  My personal favorite moments were:

. Russia forcing the Turkish fleet in Rumania to retreat to one of his home Supply Centers.
. Solid defense by the English and the Turks succeeds in saving Denmark and Bulgaria, respectively.
. French and Italian fleets prepare, perhaps, to call at exotic foreign ports; and
. France and Russia meet unexpectedly in the Italian Alps and exchange small talk whilst their Italian hosts are nowhere to be seen.

We have only one retreat required (Turkish F Rumania) and only one spot available for its retreat (Sevastopol) so that
retreat has been made automatically.  If the Sultan would prefer to retreat his unit off the board instead, he need only contact me within 24 hours and I will relay his decision to everyone.

Our next deadline is Fall 1903 on Wednesday, June 16, at 8 pm Eastern US time.

Please check the adjudication below and let me know promptly if there are any errors.

Cheers,
Chris

Greetings Gumballers,

Year 2 sees plenty of action all around the map.  Some are up, some are down, but no one seems to be separating from the pack just yet.

Highlights:
. The English are topping the board by 1 SC, thanks to Russian help in taking Denmark away from the Germans.
. Meanwhile, the Germans actually leave French territory voluntarily.  Will the French be appeased?
. Italy and Austria stay friendly, and each is able to hold on to what they have.
. Turkey keeps pace, however, by capturing Rumania.  Will he regret having to give up the Black Sea to do so?

Hi Players,

So now it's year two of our little adventure.  If last year was jostling for position, this is the year that punches get exchanged.  At least, that's what happens in the east.  In the west, it's do-si-do and everybody rotate to the right.

Highlights:

. England ducks the war with France and finds himself with two friends eager to escort him into Sweden.

. France shifts hard to the Atlantic, only to find the English fleet has slipped away.  Was it only there to distract from the German army now in Burgundy?

. Germany, meanwhile swings and misses at the Russian army in Silesia as that unit also moves away before it can be swatted

. Austria and Turkey both want Rumania, but with no coordination it's a big bounce
and the space stays white for one more season.

. And finally, our last neutral falls to the little green sailors... at least for now.

With only the one choice, the Austrian army dislodged from Galicia auto-retreats to Vienna.  If the Archduke prefers to retreat off-the-board instead he need only let me know within 24 hours and I'll post the change.

Fall 1902 is up next.  Deadline is Wednesday, June 3, at 8 pm Eastern US time.

Play on!

Chris

Thanks to all for so far getting orders in promptly.  This looks to me like a good time to settle into a weekly routine.  Henceforth, our standard deadlines will be as follows.

Wednesdays    Spring/Fall

Thursdays    Retreats, if needed

All deadlines are 8 pm Eastern US time (midnight GMT).

If all orders are marked final I will continue to reserve the option to adjudicate a day early.  That hasn't been happening the last couple of turns, though.

Okay?  I think that's all our new business.  Play on!

Hi Players,

Very interesting turn, I thought, with many of you playing for position rather than dots.  Nothing truly outrageous but interesting nonetheless, like the English player claiming MAO and Italy convoying to Albania rather than Greece or Tunis.

Elsewhere:
. France colonizes Iberia
. Germany is sitting pretty with three big builds
. Russia goes in three different directions
. Austria is looking for friends, and
. Turkey passes up Greece in order to give the Serbs a noogie

As always, please check for errors and let me know ASAP.

Hello Players,

Gumball Gunboat is off and rolling!  Some will be chewed up.  Some will be spat out.  And, with luck and skill, some fortunate one(s) of you will find yourself stuck to the bedpost of victory!

Highlights of the first turn include... um... well, not all that much happened.  F and G played nice.  A and I played nice.  R managed a couple of passive-aggressive bounces with his two southern neighbors.

I'd have to say the most interesting order in round 1 was the one for Austria's fleet in Trieste.  Hey, Admiral, can I loan you an atlas.  Hmmm?

As always, please check the orders and map for errors.

Cheers,
Chris

Gumball - Game Start - Corrino   (May 11, 2010, 7:58 pm)
Players,

Thanks to everyone for responding so quickly.  The Gumball is ready to roll!

You will receive your country assignments immediately following this message.  Thanks to one generous soul who specified "no preference" I was able to give everyone else either their first or second choice.

Deadlines will be weekly.  The vote was 3.6 in favor of twice weekly versus 3.4 in favor of once a week, but this is case where I don't want to force through the more rapid schedule without a significant majority.  No point in stressing people out.

However, there is a way we can be flexible.  What I will do is set each deadline a week ahead of the previous adjudication, BUT if I get orders marked "FINAL" from every player I will adjudicate
early.  That's what I'm doing in DC324 and it is working well.  Most players, in fact, have given me a blanket authorization which says "any orders I submit can be considered final."  So, it's up to you, really.  Tell me what you think.

First official deadline:  Tuesday, May 18, 8:00 pm Eastern US time (which I believe is midnight GMT).

Please feel free to write me any time with questions, but remember NOT to post to the game forum.

Attached is the starting map for the game.

Good luck!

Chris
