dc330: Fa44 delay - dknemeyer   (Oct 27, 2010, 10:30 pm)
Hi Everyone,
I've had a request to delay the fall season due to a serious family illness. For now I am going to delay the game for a week to accommodate this situation. Further delays or accommodation are possible given the sensitivity of this situation. Thank you for understanding.

dc330: Sp44 Player Press! - dknemeyer   (Oct 27, 2010, 9:57 am)
Italian Press
El Duce wishes to present to the leaders of European great powers a proposal to end the conflict that has forced pacifistic Italy to defend itself against the anachronistic imperial ambitions of Germany, France, Poland, Britain and Turkey and the cruder Marxist notions of the Spanish and the Soviets.
While some have said that Europe must be either all facist or all communist, it can be both; while some have said that Europe must be either all Islamic or all Christian, it can be both; while some have said that the seas must be all British or all Italian, they can be both; while some have said that Europe must be dominated by Italian infantry or Polish cavalry, both can co-exist.
The proposal, then, is that the nations of Britain, Poland, Turkey and Italy and the Socialist Internationale sign a peace treaty that ends the conflict now. The exclusion of France is, unfortunately, a condition that Italy must demand, as the history books will show that French aggression triggered much of this conflict and has cost many Italian lives.
Shall the guns fall silent? El Duce says yes.=

Gents,
The votes fail; the war continues!!! There are two new votes due with your FALL orders: a 4-way BIPT and a 5-way BIPST.
In what has been a rare occurrence, the Turkish military suffers setbacks in the east, center and west, with armies in Slovakia and Western Ukraine being disbanded and the fleet in Morocco looking for higher ground. There are two retreats:
British F South-Western Approaches can retreat to Irish Sea or Bay of Biscay or Galicia or Gibraltar or OTB
Turkish F Morocco can retreat to Gibraltar or OTB
Sorry for the late adjudication. As some of you are aware I've been diagnosed with both mono and Lyme disease. I'm generally making the best of it but it has been a brutal month that is continuing into a second. Not fun. Anyway...down to business!

Sorry for the late adjudication. I was waiting on French orders and finally just applied the default disband.
In 1943 we saw a reversal or, at minimum, slowing of the ambitions of our leaders. What will 1944 present?
Don't forget to vote for or against a Turkish solo with your spring orders. Additionally, there has been proposed a 4-way British, Italian, Polish, Turkish draw. So vote for or against that as well!

dc330: Wi43 reminder and update - dknemeyer   (Oct 20, 2010, 9:32 am)
Hi Everyone,
First, while it is fine to send in spring orders already I want to make sure there is no ambiguity: winter adjustments are first - due tomorrow at our usual time - and most players have an adjustment one way or the other. so, get those in.
The other thing is an update: Turkish A SAl actually ordered to Tripoli, not Algiers last season. This will be updated in the winter adjudication but please keep it in mind as you puzzle through your builds and disbands.
Thanks,
Dirk

Friends,
This season we say farewell to our first player as Germany drops their final centers to an ongoing British attack. Thanks for playing - and designing the variant - Charles. Please don't forget to submit an EOG statement for us.
We have our first end game proposal this season: for a Turkish solo! Please be sure to include your vote with your SPRING orders.
There are no retreats this season as the dislodged German unit is forced to disband thanks to no remaining supply centers, while the Turkish army in Transylvania was destroyed; upcoming deadlines at the end of this note.

Hi Everyone,
Attached are the summer 1943 results. Britain retreated from Hamburg to Berlin, while Poland left Western Ukraine for the friendly confines of Volhynia.
Also, please note that there was a small error in the orders inputted for Poland. Instead of:
A Cracow - Transylvania (*Fails*)A Slovakia, no move received
The correct final orders were:
> Army Cracow to Rumania
> Army Slovakia to Transylvania
The updated maps reflect the correct board situation. Thanks to Robert for pointing this out, despite the correct orders adversely affecting his position.
Here is our upcoming schedule:

Apologies on not adjudicating last night. As some of you know I have been bed-ridden for now more than a week, and last night our adjudication feel victim to my suffering. I had expected to get it out and thus did not send out a notice that it would not be done. Sorry about that.
There are two retreats: British F Hamburg can retreat to Helgoland Bight or Baltic Sea or Berlin or OTB. Polish A Western Ukraine can retreat to Volhynia or OTB. If either of you need an extension due to the late adjudication please let me know; otherwise these are due tomorrow at the usual time.

Dirk,
Given the bounce in Rome, my press kind of looks a little silly now. But I guess that we in the Ministry of Truth can simply rewrite history ... again ... and again ... and again ... Wink

---- Dirk Knemeyer wrote:
A tumultuous season. The end game seems to be crystallizing: Britain and Poland were part of a shaky middle, and this year we see it is Poland who exercises some upward mobility to try and break into the lead group with Italy and Turkey, while Britain loses ground and now juggles a more shaky position. Germany's back appears broken, the Republicans glimmer of hope takes a hit, and France and the Soviets keep playing out the string. But those French...in Rheinland now?!

There are 3 retreats this season; upcoming deadlines at the end of this note. And, don't look now, but we have some beloved player press!!!

Italian Press:

After their holiday in Valencia the Italian marine corps has returned refreshed to Rome, ready to fight new battles for the expanding empire. Despite terrible propaganda that has occasionally appeared in the Italian media - propaganda frowned upon by el Duce and his government, as he has always been fairminded regarding legitimate socialism - about evils of the Spanish Republican regime, the visit was a friendly one, with fine food, good companionship and fun in the sun and the waters.

As the history books will say (once they have been altered) the friendship between Spain and Italy has always been strong, no matter the internal politics of each peaceloving peoples. There has never been any war between us. Guernica was never bombed; Valencia was never occupied.

dc330: Fa42 Results! - dknemeyer   (Oct 06, 2010, 12:40 am)

Dirk,
Given the bounce in Rome, my press kind of looks a little silly now. But I guess that we in the Ministry of Truth can simply rewrite history ... again ... and again ... and again ... Wink

Hi Everyone,
Britain is traveling today and has requested to use his extension this turn. Thus the deadline is pushed back up to eight hours, at the point which he inputs his orders marked "Final".
FYI, if the full eight hours are taken I will likely be asleep and adjudicate in the morning. If it comes earlier than that and I am still up I will adjudicate immediately.
Happy dipping!

An odd season. While a variety of centers change hands - generally following a theme of "rich get richer" - there are misorders and unused supports in various places. Perhaps the officer corps is napping and letting the NCO's dictate strategy this spring? Treat this as a reminder to all players to double-check your orders and make sure you are placing valid ones!
Elsewhere...
On December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor; within days the United States has declared war on Japan and is officially part of the imbroglio.
On January 11 Japan declares war on the Netherlands, invades the Netherlands East Indies, and captures Kuala Lumpur.
On February 15 Singapore surrenders to Japan.
On April 9 the Bataan Peninsula falls to Japan and the Bataan Death March began.
In May the first undersea oil pipeline is tested in the English Channel between England and France.
There is one (Polish) retreat this season. Robert, let me know if you need more time on it since the spring adjudication is late. More upcoming deadlines at the end of this note:

Hi Everyone,
I'm on the last day of a business trip today (flying tonight) and am very ill. As such I don't want to push myself to get the adjudication done late when I get home. So I'm going to extend the deadline by 18 hours, to 17:00 GMT tomorrow.
My apologies.

dc330: Fa41 Update - dknemeyer   (Sep 22, 2010, 12:14 am)
Hi Folks,
Two mistakes I'm aware of so far:
I keep counting 11 Turkish units but an observer is assuring me there are 12 and thus Turkey only gets 1 build. So, I'm sure I'm missing something and expect just 1 Turkish build.
Also: I mixed up two Italian units: the mover into Austria should be STy, not Slo. I will update the map for this in the winter adjudication.
Thanks,
Dirk

Italian Press:
Communists: are they evil, stupid or both?
Everyone knows that Stalin is a mass murderer. But how many know the evil extremist agenda of President Azana, the leader of the far left regime of Spain?
Walk through any Spanish town in the heat of the afternoon. Bodies lie everywhere - on benches, on sedan chairs, on cosy couches on sweeping verandas. Are they asleep or have they been horribly massacred by the evil ruler lurking in his luxurious apartments in Barcelona? We did not check, but we are pretty sure that they have been horribly massacred. And they stupidity? They did not even destroy the evidence. Evil *and* stupid.
The luxurious apartments? We visited. And what we found was so shocking and so horrifying - and so stupid - that we hesitate to mention it. Having hesitated, here goes: they are torturing puppies. Badly. (By that, we mean that they are trying to torture puppies, demonstrating their evil, but doing it in an incompetent way, such that the puppies are having fun running around chasing toys, getting well fed, wagging their tails, getting lots of pats and so on.) These communists are evil and stupid, that is for sure. They do not know how to torture puppies. Mussolini does, showing his clear superiority.
And that is why Spain must be destroyed: they must be taught how to torture puppies properly.
This exclusive look into the dark world of communism and its many apologists brought to you from the dark world of fascism and its many apologists.

Apologies, but owing to my long day I will eschew the historical flavour this season and simply produce the adjudication. I accidentally skipped the step to produce the map with arrows, sorry about that...
Thanks in advance for correcting any errors, I do get tripped up by the forced Autumn season in Realpolitik that blocks the program from listing proper builds.
There are 2 retreats this season; upcoming deadlines at the end of this note:

The deadline for fall 1941 is in a scant 29 hours. I've only received two sets of orders to date, so don't delay in, at least, getting prelims in!
FYI, I will be traveling this week and thru our main adjudication next as well. In each case I will be adjudicating before bed the same night as orders are due but it may be some hours after the deadline. Just FYI...
Dirk

Oh never mind. Now my email client decides to display it properly. As if I haven't embarassed myself enough already this game...

I'll retreat to Brest. OTB isn't happening, and going to Spain would be silly. That's final. You can adjudicate it whenever you like.

Hi Dirk,

It's harder for me to decide on my retreat when you don't publish the moves (I don't like interpreting the pictures). Maybe those are forthcoming?

Ahem. On that undignified note let us review the world headlines from the last 6 months before dipping back into the boiling cauldron. Mr. Murrow?

On April 19 celebrated playwright Bertolt Brecht staged an anti-war play, Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder in Zurich.
In late April the political jockeying around U.S. involvement in World War 2 begins to boil. Charles Lindbergh keynotes the first mass rally of the America First Committee. President Franklin D. Roosevelt publicly criticizes the American hero resulting in his resigning his commission in the U.S. Army Air Corps Reserve.

On May 1 the first Defense Bonds and Defense Savings Stamps go on sale in the United States and will fund greatly increased production of military equipment.
Also on May 1 a product called "breakfast cereal" is introduced by General Mills. Called "CheeriOats", it would go on to become Cheerios.

Also on May 1 the movie Citizen Kane premieres in New York City.
In an alternate universe, on May 9 German sub U-110 is captured. On board is the latest Enigma cryptography machine which Allied cryptographers use to break coded German messages.

On May 12 Konrad Zuse presents the Z3, the world's first working, programmable, fully automatic computer in Berlin.
4,000 Chongqing civilians are asphyxiated in a bomb shelter during the Japanese Bombing of Chongqing on June 5.

In an alternate universe, on June 13 TASS, the official Soviet news agency, denies reports of tension between Germany and the Soviet Union.
There is only one summer retreat: French A Gascony may retreat to Bre, Cat, Nav or off the board. Nick, please get me your retreat by Thursday at our normal adjudication time.

And now, for a GM's best friend, player press!
Eastern Ukraine, Crimean Peninsula, Sevastopol

The tides of war never stop turning - a lesson the Polish troops occupying the Eastern Ukraine by now will have learned. The recent days might be a turning point in the sheer unstoppable advance of the Polish Armed Cavalry, their ranks bolstered by the tanks of their German allies. After having won one of the bloodiest battles of the war so far at Sevastopol, burning two thirds of the strategically important city to ashes, the Soviet remnants were driven into the countryside, scattering in the snow-covered plains. The more surprised was the Polish Generality, as the reconnaissance found the remaining Soviet Army holding on to Stalingrad advancing in full force towards Sevastopol. With the Polish line of communication constantly harassed by Soviet attacks, the lines of defense built slower tan expected, and more forces were relocated to meet the desperate Soviets in the plains before they could once again dig in the ruined streets of Sevastopol. A small series of skirmishes began, drawing more and more attention to the north towards Kharkov and away from the Crimean Peninsula. Polish troops closed in on the Soviet army, trying to cut the route to Stalingrad and circumvent it southwards - expecting to be the anvil for the Polish hammer from Moscow to fall - they took the bait Stalin had prepared...

With the coastal lines of Odessa and Sevastopol only defended with a minimum garrison, Turkish troops launched a major naval assault and amphibious landing. Within 3 days, the Turkish troops were able to secure a coastal strip as far as 60 km inland from Odessa and 85  km inland from Sevastopol, amassing heavy artillery and AT guns in the area. While in the north-east, the Soviet army withdrew, the Polish found themselves with one option left: retreat to Kiev, now facing a closed Turkish front line ranging from Chisinau, Moldavia to Zaporozhye, Eastern Ukraine. The tides of war never stop turning, they say...
