dc337 - Spring 1902 Results - z93blom   (Sep 18, 2010, 6:01 am)
Diplomats,
I've had several people tell me that they'd prefer to have the major turns due on Mondays, as had been the case for a few turns. I myself had a hard time keeping the schedule this week as we were busy last night.

I currently have a full set of orders from everyone for the Fall. Despite that I've decided to extend the deadline until Monday. From now on the major turns will be due on Mondays, and the minor turns will be due on Wednesday, with both Autumn and Winter being due on the same day.

I want to thank you all for turning in orders on time continuously. So far noone has used their grace period, and we are progressing nicely.

Next turn: Fall 1902 MovementNext Deadline: Monday, 20th of September 2010, 18:00 GMT (6PM).

Diplomats,
Waiting those 12 hours might have lessened the mistakes, but unfortunately I still made a small mistake.

Sun had ordered his Vienna army to Tyrolia, not to Trieste as I had entered it. The move caused his unit to bounce with Dirk's movement north from Milan and Rome, causing both those units to halt in their tracks. As far as I can tell there were no further consequences of the mistake.

You should find an updated image with the final positions of all units along with this mail.

Diplomats,
I'm terrribly sorry for the delay in the adjudication this season. Some people asked for the reason for the delay and it was simply due to a hectic day yesterday. I'm quite sure that had I done the adjudication yesterday evening I would have made a lot of mistakes in the adjudication, so I felt better doing it this morning.

I am not usually willing to give extensions to a deadline once it has been given. If you are in need of a longer deadline, give me a notice before the fact and I'm sure that we can work out a schedule that works for everyone. We do have the one 24-hour grace period for everyone that can be used if you forget to send me orders. So far noone has used up their grace period. When that sets in I will give notice to everyone that we are entering a grace period, but I will not disclose who is causing it. The players who are causing it will be noticed though in a separate mail.

Now back to the game:We have disagreements in the west over who shall get Gibraltar, and France manages to grab that vital piece of land in front of the Brits. In the east we have the Russians being pushed out of Warsaw by a German army, Britain entering Sweden and Austria pushing into the Russian lands. Russia however manages to enter the Black Sea and therefore saves his Army from being crushed out of existence.

We have a single retreat that is due, and that is the Army in Warsaw. With only a single province to retreat to I auto-retreated the unit. If you want to retreat off the board instead Frank, give me a holler within 24 hours.

Diplomats,
Small changes in the ownership of centers this year, as England helps Russia out in the north, Italy takes the last remaining neutral center and Austria manages to wrest Bulgaria from the Turkish forces. The Turkish army does not have anywhere to retreat to and is moved off the board.

We have one retreat due and three (or four) build orders. Remember that you may order conditional builds depending on the retreat.
Autumn Retreats: German F Denmark can retreat to Skagerrak, Helgoland Bight, Kiel or OTB.

Winter Adjustments:Austria: Build 1Germany: Build 0 ( or 1 if the retreat is OTB)Italy: Build 1Russia: Build 1

Austrian Press:

Reuter News (Vienna) - MAP MAKERS criticized, Cartographers complain about LANGuages!

Reports of the Austrian-Hungarian army getting lost in the Galician province sparked criticism of the national cartographers.

"My tank corps for a Garmin!" exclaimed Brig General Karl von Trapp, "These old paper maps are horrendous.  Take a look at the drawings here - there are none!  All I see is the some stupid Galician town name written in 4+ languages.  And if that wasn't enough, there's Slavic sub-titles!"

The Minister of Maps and Other Old Fashion Navigation Items held an impromptu press conference after meeting with his staff of cartographers.

"It isn't our fault we have all of these legal demands for making sure all of our maps are 'politically correct'," said the Minister. "You try to write something in Hungarian or Czech.  Have you seen Hungarian or Czech written down?  There's a symbol for each dang letter!  I wish they would give up the Roman alphabet and start with something else.  And don't get me started with German.  I don't know who got the bright idea of combining words together to create a new word in German.  I think the German forbears forgot to think about of the space bar.  You try to write something like: Rindfleischetikettierungsueberwachungsaufgabenuebertragungsgesetz on a map.  You see how good your map is."

At the minister's press conference, a small gathering of protestors held a rally holding signs support, "American as the official language!"  The police disbursed them quickly by showing that they should be in Arizona and not Vienna.

The Autumn and the Winter has passed and we're moving on to the Spring. The autumn sees the English Fleet retreat into Portugal (no big surprise there).
The Winter sees units pop up all over Europe. Looks like the confrontation is near. With one Neutral center remaining I'm looking forward to some blood-shedding this upcoming year, unless we all settle down and talk instead.

Diplomats,
I'm sorry about the delay in adjudicating this. When I got home last night I didn't have any access to the net. Something's obviously fixed itself overnight - everything's fine again.

First order of business - a rule change:After talking with Baron Powell, the variant designer, I've decided to go with the victory conditions as specified in the variant description. This means 18 centers to win. This also means that two of you can accomplish this in the same season. The 1900 wiki page states that this might result in a tiebreak, and that the game should go on until we have a winner. If there are any comments about this change in the rules, please take them up with me immediately. I'm pretty sure that the end-game victory condition hasn't affected the game all too much already, which is why I'm changing it.

Second order of business - a rules clarification:There have been a question about the variant that's been asked - specifically the Russian situation. We are playing with the latest variant version, as described on the 1900 wiki page. That version has a rule called the Russian Emergency Measures (REM). This allows Russia to have an extra unit on the board when one of his home centers is occupied by foreign forces, but not when all of them are occupied.

There was a previous version of the variant that had a different rule, called Steamroller. We are not playing with that rule. Any references to it you may find on the net are obsolete for this game.

Third order of business - the orders:Things are starting to heat up. The Russian unit in Rumania is crushed by a combined Austrian/Turkish force. The British unit in southern Spain is also pushed out of Spain by the French units. The British Fleet, however, has a few retreat options - one of which is an empty supply center.

We have a single retreat due:English F Spain(wc) can retreat to: Portugal, Gibraltar, or OTB (Off the Board).
I'll also need to take in the builds. They can be conditional depending on where the English Fleet retreats to.

Austria: Supp  5 Unit  3 Build  2Britain: Supp  5 Unit  4 Build  1 (or 2 if the retreat is OTB or into Portugal)France: Supp  6 Unit  4 Build  2Germany: Supp  7 Unit  4 Build  3

Italy: Supp  5 Unit  3 Build  2Russia: Supp  5 Unit  3 Build  2Turkey: Supp  4 Unit  3 Build  1

Diplomats,
A small mistake and an explanation.
You should find the image with the orders attached to this mail. I mistakenly sent the image with the final positions of all units twice.

An explanation about Spain is also in order. RealPolitik (the program that I use to adjudicate with) cannot handle the three coasts of Spain that is in this variant. Therefore in RealPolitik Spain has been split into two provinces - Spain and SpainWC. Spain is still a single province! The split into two provinces is just to allow me to be able to use the program at all with the variant.

The three coasts of Spain are the North coast, the west coast and the east coast. The north coast is the coast between Portugal and France just like in the standard variant. The east coast is Spain's Mediterranean coast. The west coast is the small space in between Gibraltar and Portugal.

The English Fleet currently occupying Spain is situated on the west coast of Spain.

Diplomats,
It is with great pleasure that I present the results of the first season. We had some clashes, and I might guess at some of the conflicts heating up. I'm not going to spoil anyone's surprise though, so I will not disclose them openly. There are no retreats needed so we'll move into the Fall season immediately. I'll allow a full week for this season - I expect that there might be things to discuss. Soon we'll step up the pace a bit.

I'm also proud to present that we have Baron Powell listening in on the game. Baron is the designer of the variant, and I'll copy all the adjudications to him as well.

Keep the preliminary orders coming. Now that we've got the game started I'm not going to allow any replacements.

Keep the preliminary orders coming. Now that we've got the game started I'm not going to allow any replacements.

dc337 - Spring 1900 Results - z93blom   (Aug 16, 2010, 3:41 pm)
Diplomats,
It is with great pleasure that I present the results of the first season.

Oh, and here are the files as well.
If you're going to load the .dpy file (RealPolitik) I suggest you get the updated 1900.zip (from today) file from the site. I've changed the order of the powers so that they are alphabetical.

Diplomats,
A small mistake and an explanation.
