DC 345: F1901 First Year's Progress - AceRimmer   (Oct 27, 2010, 10:29 pm)
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but Dulceria would be even if he retreats Rum, and +1 if he retreats otb. Right? Unless you mean -1 from the start of the game. But unit wise he has three centers and (currently) three units."

You are correct, John. Dulceria will not need to build nor disband this winter (pending his retreat). However, he is -1 SC since the beginning of the game.

On a separate note:

In my adjudications, I present your orders *as written* (copied and pasted). This way, you see the orders exactly the same way as I receive them. (This way, if -- as in the last game I GM'd -- your unit supports an opposing army to go to a province named "Hell", that will show up in the orders -- along with a *Void*, since your enemy presumably didn't order his unit to go to Hell).

Nerd moment.  Back in the late 90s there was a "one hit wonder" phenomenon within Google.  The challenge was to find 2 words that, when typed in, yielded only one result.  "Trigspor" and "Diplomacy" is now such a wonder!  Then again, so is "Trigspor" and "Nude" Wait, that has 3 hits.  Victory! (?)

Meanwhile, Adaria is actually an Amazonian vending machine that takes only Adarian cheques.  It dispenses either virgins or cacti.  It's kind of like Russian Roulette.

Autumn 1901 retreats are due tomorrow at 3:00 CST (20:00 GMT).  We've got a few.

The Imperial (DRE) army in Marseilles may retreat to Burgundy, Piedmont, or OTB

The Dulcerian army in Rumania may retreat to Galicia, Ukraine, or OTB

The Itean fleet in London may retreat to North Sea, Wales, or OTB.

It's kind of fun to Google your country names.  It may or may not say something about you as a person.  [Note: I ignored the Democratic Roman Empire and The One Who Will Win, since those phrases show up in a cornucopia of various contexts.]

Dulceria - a Spanish word for a candy shop or sweet shop. and, you know, those supply centers do look kind of sweet and tasty (just ask Zonotrichia).

Zonotrichia - the scientific genus name for a variety of North American sparrows, some of which nest nearby to Warren.  I bet he's easily felled with two barrels of birdshot.

Itea - International Technology Education Association.  Institute for Taoist Education and Acupuncture.  Also a name of towns in Greece.  And the genus name of the flowering sweetspire shrub that blooms in July.  With a name like this, he could be anything and everything.  Judging from 1901, perhaps it means "I'm taking extreme abuse".  Safest to poke him full of needles and trim any spindly branches.

Hembria - There is apparently a family surname of Hembria wandering down south in Georgia.  I know this because poor ol' Cam left a November 1976 obituary.  Hembria.  Obituary.  Not too promising.

Trigspor - thanks to this game, it has *8* results in Google.  We're #1 on the list!  The next four results involve adjacent foreign words of "Trigs" and "Por" (or "trig-spor"Wink.  And then, predictably, the last three are for porn sites listed as "Trigsporn".  Provide your own punchline.

Adaria - this is the fun one.  It's a company that provides vending services in and around Toronto!  No, it's a girl's name meaning "Virgin".  No, wait, it's the name of a cacti and succulents garden in Romania.  Hold on. "Adarian Money" is personal finance software.  But, no, it's actually just another porn website, this one devoted to pictures of sexy, naked Amazon women.  Mr. Maslow, just what do you do with your time?  Regardless, I think it sounds like "I dare ya". are you gonna let him talk to ya like that?

Okay, now for the adjudication.  Below the adjudication, I list adjustments for Winter (due Friday).

Gaul is reunited!  One suspects that in the process Adaria has not been entirely honest.  Still, it's a nifty feat that the sexy, naked Amazons have pulled off - earning support from two different allies against two different enemies.  So, Mr. Maslow is one of the year's big winners.

The other big winner - making good on his threat to paint the screen zombie green - Mr. Fleming of Zonotrichia.  Expect more fluorescent units out of Bulgaria and Sevastopol soon.

One of the side stories here is the diplomatic war between the DRE and Trigspor.  Round One goes unambiguously to Trigspor, who wins the Bachelorette-like wooing of Adaria and who secures a vital support in Trieste from the sparrow-people.  Thus, what could have ended in +1 for DRE and -1 for Trigspor instead results in -1 for DRE and even-Steven for Trigspor.

In the North, Itea fails to persuade either Hembria or The One Who Will Win to relent.  The results are gruesome for the retail furniture chain but yield moderate growth for both halves of the northern alliance.

As we near the end of 1901, there is still plenty of game left to play.  It may be time to rearrange some of the alliances that you *think* are running the game.

I just remembered... there was press... and just for the record, no horse was deployed.

Press:
Rome - 25th July 1901
After relocating the Senate to Rome
only last year the presence of the approaching Adarian fleet has made
Emperor Nathan wary. So yesterday the order came, in triplicate, to move
the Senate back to Venice. Many in the Senate expressed their wish to
stay with the people in Rome, it will be a test of how much power the
Senate has within this "Democratic" Empire as to whether any will stay.
The Emperor himself will remain in his palace in Rome while his armies
are deployed North. He does of course have a fast horse on stand by.

You are correct, John. Dulceria will not need to build nor disband this winter (pending his retreat). However, he is -1 SC since the beginning of the game.

Plane 1:  "I am deeply saddened to report that once

so trusting so soon after meeting a new world leader, but I must admit, I
didn't think that anyone could be so foolish as to attack me from such a

I'd just like to let all of Europe know that the horrid green blobs

In 1874, Loki Falcon led a rebellion against the Christian leaders in Scandinavia.  In their place, he created a atheist democratic nation, with the people electing him as their first president.  The new nation quickly grew, 'liberating' Kiel and London.  In 1887, Sweden was captured by the Were-hamsters from the east, making the Itean people nervous.  In spring 1901, war broke out, and the Iteans recaptured Sweden, but lost Norway to the Were-Hamsters, and Kiel to the lying bastards of Hembria.

Itea retreats fleets to Denmark and Norwegian Sea. Itea offers the follow announcement:
"Here is a brief history of Itea:
In 1874, Loki Falcon led a rebellion against the Christian leaders in Scandinavia. In their place, he created a atheist democratic nation, with the people electing him as their first president. The new nation quickly grew, 'liberating' Kiel and London. In 1887, Sweden was captured by the Were-hamsters from the east, making the Itean people nervous. In spring 1901, war broke out, and the Iteans recaptured Sweden, but lost Norway to the Were-Hamsters, and Kiel to the lying bastards of Hembria.
(I didn't post this earlier because I didn't want to make enemies to early, and so I could have the latest updates in my history books)
--Loki Falcon, President of Itea"

Mass media not being my forte, Dulceria hires one of those dudes with
the planes with the signs behind them to fly this notice over all of
Europe:

Plane 1:  "I am deeply saddened to report that once
again, friendly diplomatic channels have broken down.  I tend not to be
so trusting so soon after meeting a new world leader, but I must admit, I
didn't think that anyone could be so foolish as to attack me from such a
poor position.  Man this sign is getting long.  That all being said,
I'd just like to let all of Europe know that the horrid green blobs
polluting your maps will be gone as soon as humanly possible.
Communications will be readable without protective eyewear.  Dystopia
will be a safe place (for your eyeballs) again very soon."

Plane 2:  "For all your sign needs, call 314-324-3556."

DC 345: S1901 - Two retreats and a disband... par... - AceRimmer   (Oct 20, 2010, 4:49 pm)
So, I???m opening my copy of Swedish Furniture Today (I???m a devoted reader), when I read the bold, block-lettered headline:

???Itea Captures Ikea!!!???

I eagerly read on: ???Itea seizes Swedish furniture company but loses controlling interest in Norwegian herring.??? Noooooo! Not the herring!!! But such is the truth, a strategic gamble taken by profit-maximizing greedy businessmen, and The One Who Will Win apparently craves herring. Gentlemen??? we have a war!

As you may expect, activity has been uncorked just about everywhere in Dystopia [I have decided that, for the purposes of this game, since it???s a fictitious world, the continent should have a fictitious but appropriate name]. Fleets have taken to the seas en masse, setting up a tantalizing array of theoretically possible convoys. Fiercely independent Ankara has been occupied (but not so, Warsaw!). And in the Balkans???

Well, as you might expect, things are cozy in the Balkans. And folks around those parts have never been known for being, shall we say, non-provincial. So, when the Dulcerian army from Serbia asked for temporary lodgings??? well, there was no room at the inn. (Cue somber music). The Dulcerian army in Serbia must disband.

It???s an all-around pretty cool first year.

There are two retreats, both by the new owner of low-cost, home-assembled bookshelves:

The Itean fleet in Kiel may retreat to Baltic Sea, Denmark, Helgoland Bight, or off the board.
The Itean fleet in Norway may retreat to Barents Sea, Norwegian Sea, Skagerrak, or off the board.

Summer 1901 retreats are due tomorrow, October 21st, at 3:00 p.m. CST (20:00 GMT)

Press from The One Who Will Win:
???The great white were-hamsters of the north declare war on the vampire lemmings of Scandinavia. We seek to purge the world of this menace. It has come to our attention that "humans" also inhabit these lands and we offer them the chance to surrender peacefully. We have openings in our army for food pellet dispensers, and wood shaving changers. While we have no quarrel with these large simians, we cannot vouch for their safety if they insist on remaining in the lands of the vampire lemmings.???

Tomorrow is the first movement adjudication: Spring 1901. Orders are due at 3:00 CST (20:00 GMT).
To everything there is a season and a purpose for everything under the sun. The seasons for choosing SCs and initial unit placements have passed. Tomorrow begins the true test of your diplomatic and strategic abilities.
Good news: I have seven sets of prelims. Assuming we get the eighth, we're be ready to go.
Bad news: not everybody is going to like the S1901 adjudication.

A disease, you say?  Our parliament, located strategically under the protection of the Swiss so that it may never be taken, has come to the Most Glorious Name Hembria to celebrate the diversity of our nation.  H stands for (Holland) honesty.  In all our dealings we seek to gain the trust of each other and those around us.  E stands for (Edinburgh) equality.  Every citizen has an important role to play in the success of our nation.  M stands for (Munich) mastery.  In all things we
strive to do our tasks to the best of our abilities.  B stands for (Belgium) bravery.  When faced with challenges, we will not fear for ourselves, but protect our nation to the utmost.  Finally, Ria, in our language, means "River" and celebrates that the Rhine flows from our parliament in Switzerland through our territories of Munich, Ruhr and Holland before it flows into the North Sea, which hold our glorious territories together.

So, a disease?  Perhaps.  But one worth catching!

Hembria?  It sounds like a terrifying disease, or perhaps like a type of hemmorage.  In either case, let's switch our flag to orange.  When we take over the continent, airplanes will have no problems landing, and all children will be forced to wear our bright orange uniforms, which will incidentally reduce automobile accidents when they run into the street playing with balls bearing the face of our dear leader.

But deep in the lands of northern Russia, the most fearsome of all creatures began to multiply. The Age of the Were-Hamsters has begun! Having recently crushed their rivals (the were-butterflies), the were-hamsters are ready at last to conquer the pitiful humans of Europe. That being said, if our supply lines of coconuts and champagne are threatened, we switch to whiskey and the gloves come off!

Mike Penner eschewed pomp and ceremony.  His country is named Hembria.  Apparently, it needs no story??? the name alone is sufficient to inspire terror and cowering.

Finally, Warren Fleming??? failed to name his country.  True to my threat, I have decided to name his country for him.  Maybe I???ll let him change it.  Still, I hope he appreciates it???. Zonotrichia!

Having recently crushed their rivals (the were-butterflies), the were-hamsters are ready at last to conquer the pitiful humans of Europe. Fashioning giant weapons of war, the were-hamsters shall crush their foes under the vicious spikes of their were-hamster wheels. Our country's name is 'The one who will win.' So when you are talking with your 'allies' you can say 'I was just talking with the one who will win, and he said such and such."

Map Notes:

You may notice that two nations share a first letter: Dulceria and the Democratic Roman Empire.  For cartographic purposes, the black units of Dulceria bear the letter ???D???.  The red armies of the DRE bear the letter ???E??? (for Empire!).

Also, I don???t know how y???all feel, but I find that Adarian olive is very like unto the eye as Hembrian forest green.  The similarity between ???A??? and ???H??? is not helping.  Mayhaps one of these nations would like a switch to, oh??? Magenta, Orange, or Yellow?

One final explanation before the builds.  I am attaching a GIF of the map, an RP (.dpy) file, and a zipped file of the Anarchy folder.  For those of you who are using RP, you will need my homemade Anarchy variant in order to read the .dpy file.  You want to unzip the Anarchy folder and place it inside your Realpolitik > Variant Files folder.  [Note: I???m using RP version 1.7.0alpha1???

Just want to apologise for that. Went off travelling for a few days and thought I'd find time.....

I also use prelims, just not in this case for some reason. Well it's a bit different than most situations. Anyhow, shouldn't happen again. Chat with you all soon.

I use prelims and still have an NMR recorded somehow or another....  I guess they're like condoms.  Only 99% effective.

A little soap-boxing here (and I need to say in advance that Warren is not alone in having been late so far)...

I like to run games without NMRs.  If a player is late, I postpone the adjudication until I receive orders.

This only works if players are timely.  Otherwise, I get taken advantage of (in not quite the same way that John took advantage of me in DC 340...), and then the game slows down, and everybody has less fun, and the offending player gets booted.

Anarchy requires more player commitment, and I really don't want to find myself recruiting players for this off-kilter variant.

So, now that we're into the actual game-play, please get orders in on time.  And use prelims!  Use prelims!  Use prelims!  Use prelims!  [If you wonder how some players go through life without a single NMR... it's PRELIMS!]

The starting SCs have all been allocated, and if I may say so myself... what a mess! Most of you are a little bit scattered. Some of you are *really* scattered (say, from Portugal to Greece... or from Liverpool to Tunis).
I knew the last round of the draft would be complicated. You guys didn't make it easy for me. One pair of prefs was identical all the way through fourth best. I had to invoke a tie-breaker from previous rounds. Yet, another player with a previous round tie-breaker got stuck with a second-best pick.
In the end... there are two neutrals. Ankara flies no flag.
Warsaw, in spite of being everybody's fourth favorite option in the last round, also retains its independence. It won't last for long Smile
I should note: it's clear to me that there must be some alliances already in action (though I'm not sure who's allied with whom). It's the only explanation for some of these final-round picks. Either that, or there's some heavy-duty sampling of banned narcotic substances. If it's the latter, I really don't want to know.
Before I unveil the final picks, let me remind you:
(1) Winter 1900 adjustments (four builds for everyone... and, yes, you *can* waive a build) are due on Tuesday, October 12, at 3:00 CST (20:00 GMT).
(2) If you haven't already named your country, you need to do so by Tuesday.
Round 4 Results -
Berlin - John Reside
London - Loki Falcon (Itea)
Munich - Mike Penner
Naples - Nathan Edwards (DRE)
Serbia - Philip King
Trieste - Mike Hoffman
Tunis - Alex Maslow (Adaria)
Vienna - Warren Fleming
A third nation has a name plate at the UAN (United Anarchist Nations): Adaria. The glorious nation of Adaria rises from the ashes of the fallen French empire, which in its folly sought world domination and things of that sort. We wish only peace and quiet, and we'll bash anyone who tries to interrupt our national siestas (twice daily). Seriously, we pillow fight dirty. If it means taking you all over under our restful wing, we will stop at nothing!!! Ahem. So yes. Just let us rest and everything will be "dreamy."
To Moderator Sims: for purposes of the DC website, please be it known that the final color choices are: Red, Olive, Navy, White, Forest, Green, Crimson, and Black.
Good luck. You're all going to need it.

I apologize everyone. That was me. We discovered termite damage in my
duplex a while back, and now that the contractor is in there working, our
landlord has moved us to another unit. So, we're dealing with having
everything switched over, and who is responsible for paying what between my
landlord and I. Long story short, my internet access has been sketchy.
Everything should be all better now, we got it back on a few hours ago. But
with everything going on, this slipped my mind. A thousand apologies, it
won't happen again.
