Dc 402: Austria EOG - Joral   (Apr 19, 2012, 10:55 am)
A short EOG, but not much I can comment on from this one.
As Austria in this game, let me say that as this was my first time
playing Austria, let it be my last. I do not like playing kickball when
I'm the ball.
From my point of view, this game turned into some bizarre dance with
Italy, trading home centers, chasing out armies, but with neither of us
having any way to get ahead. Perhaps it is my inexperience as Austria,
but I was surprised that Italy was always (somehow) able to guess my
choice of move and thwart it. First turn, I had telegraphed it to both
Ben and Maslow (Not knowing at the time that France and Italy were
aligned), if I didn't flat out say it was what I was thinking. After
that, I didn't talk to France for several years, figuring that anything
I passed on would help inform Italy's actions. Turkey offered me
command of a couple of his armies near my SCs, which worked well enough
for driving out the Italian invader, but even with that, I couldn't find
a good way to gain ground.
I do have to give credit to Ben, in that he had ample opportunity to
stab me and didn't before the end. It's also funny, because France tried
to get me to turn on him by telling me in advance that Turkey was going
to do it. After about 6 years as the three-center wonder (I wonder how
in the hell I still have - and only have - my three home centers), I
couldn't bring myself to care much about the stab. Sometimes games like
this can get to a point where it's so frustrating you really just don't
want to play. Sorry Maslow, your desire for me to get fired up about
the stab came probably one or two turns too late. At this point, I just
wanted it ended.
I need to offer my congratulations to France as well for a well played
game.

Certainly the game is rigged. Don???t let that stop you; if you don???t
bet, you can???t win.

Dc 402: Turkish EOG - Kenshi777   (Apr 19, 2012, 1:27 am)
EOG:
First and foremost, thanks to Alan for his patience and dedication
serving as the GM for this game. Great service, much obliged as
always.
Early Phase: Turkey is one of those few positions (Italy being the
other one) where I have a clear-cut favorite alliance partner. In
both cases (T and I) that is Austria. In my mind, there is only one
pair of neighbors on the map that are truly forced into conflict on
the Standard map, Turkey and Italy. While there are exceptions, an
overwhelming amount of games will find Turkey and Italy going at each
others throats, either before or after Austria dies.
All that to say, I cast my lot in with Austria for DC 402, and
remained loyal to him for the vast majority of the game, only shifting
course when it became impossible to match French gains without turning
against him. I might have considered an R/T juggernaut, but my early
negotiations with Italy and Russia did not go well, and the
unannounced Russian move to Black Sea soured our relations for years
to follow. For their part however, Italy and Russia did an
outstanding job of containing the A/T alliance, and completely
stalemated us until such time as the German intervened against Russia.
Middle Phase: France and Germany outpaced their southern counterparts
by a country mile, dismantling England very efficiently. Not sure
what happened behind the scenes, but it appeared that England was just
unlucky to be targeted by a solid alliance early on, and did not
receive Russian aid to withstand the attack. So heading into the
midgame, France and Germany were gobbling English and Russian dots
while the south remained mostly deadlocked.
Then France did two very smart things. He timed his stab of Germany
perfectly, and he maneuvered in the Mediterranean to hold Italy at
gunpoint, scuttling my (sincere) attempts at a reconciliation. Factor
in that Nick and I really just had irreconcilable claims, and you've
got a full blown Turkish disaster on your hands. I found myself stuck
in the one situation I desperately hoped to avoid from Spring 1901 -
bottled up in the Mediterranean. So - full credit where it's due -
France did very well to overcome the challenge of dealing with
northern and southern threats, dispatching the north while containing
the south.
About this time, I turned on Austria. I hated to do so, as he had
been a loyal ally throughout the game. Really had no other option
though. It became apparent that I would have to concede to anything
Nick wanted if I was to break out of the Mediterranean. Which brings
us to...
Late Phase: Nick and I weren't too late in our reconciliation. Had I
not botched that one critical season of orders, we could have cracked
the Mediterranean blockade and held France at 17 or less - but then
the Real Life monster attacked. Normally I use Realpolitik to prevent
this kind of blunder, but Big Brother wouldn't let me install it on
this gov't computer. So maybe it was written, or in the tea leaves,
or Jupiter, Mars, and Pluto were in alignment or something - but I
misordered. Probably only the third time in history that has ever
happened. It was all downhill from there.
That, and I have to say France did deserve the win. He played a
masterful game from beginning to end, so misorder or not, I don't
think anyone can claim he didn't earn it. Well done, thanks to all
for the game, I hope to see you all again in the future...

Dc 402: Pass the victory - s'il vous plait - AlanRFarrington   (Apr 19, 2012, 12:41 am)
Just went it seemed that a consensus would never be reached and Maslow would have to acquire all 18 centers a vote finally comes through that proclaims him the sole victor.

A solo has been granted to Alex Maslow [France--16 centers].
Survivals are granted to Ben Hester [Turkey--11 centers], Nick Cherrier [Italy--5 centers], Sam Buck [Germany--1 center], and Stewart Nairn [Russia--1 center]

I'm sure everyone
would enjoy reading end of game statements from all the different
players (past and present).  Feel free to group email them to everyone
or send them to me and I will forward them along.  As for the GM I have
just a few words that I would like to relay about the makeup of this
game.

First of all I would like to thank all of our players for their dedication to this game.  I barely had to hassle anyone to get moves in on time and we were able to get through the entire game with no NMR's  -- a feat not easily achieved in pbem dip.

If anyone has any feedback (positive or negative) on my GMing I would love to hear it.  I'm always open to suggestions on how to make myself a better GM.

Thank you all for a great experience,
Alan Farrington

Hello all,

The French plague starts to spread even farther.  If he can hold Naples through the next turn that will put him 1 SC short of 18 but still no consensus on the vote.

Okay, France got in to Warsaw and I botched my orders and ruined the

yes to the French solo. The block was possible, but I blew it.

Mea culpa

How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing. The shadow, even the darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you - That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding onto something."

"What are we holding onto, Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for."
