DC406: Fall 07 Results! (with Maps & RW file) - offdisc   (Jun 04, 2012, 9:42 pm)
Hi All,First off, Cheers to all the Brits in the group!  Cherries Jubilee to you all! Being a Yank, I have no clue why the celebration is so important -- yes 60 years is a long time, but you're basically celebrating the facts that (a) she is still alive, and (b) no one has started a war for the throne. OK, maybe that last one is pretty significant. I do have the American bias though... after all, we fought a war to get out from under the monarchy. Smile
In all seriousness, though: Good Job Queen Elizabeth! Good Job, Englanders!
And now in our game, we have some mini-celebrations. Considering the last email I received from Mike Sims, he's dancing a jig.
Some interesting moves this game, and more alliances supporting each others' moves than in any previous round! I was quite impressed by the amount of cross-support, and especially with the cross-convoy!

Also interesting: we have just as many Auto-Disbands as we do Retreats, 2 of each.Disbanded:---------------Nomads: F To-Gai-Ru
Pirates: F Land Ho
Retreats:--------------Faeries: F CEL -> Gur, or OTB
Nomads: A Bre -> Gwy, Pen, or OTB

RETREATS are due tomorrow, 6/5 at 5 PM!!!

Hey everyone, it seems that I made a rookie GM mistake. When I said that Sims was "dancing a jig", I was simply talking about the convoy -- it's a very rare occurrence to pull off a convoy with 2 fleets that aren't yours! It was a fantastic move, and my comment would have been the same regardless of whether he referenced it in an email or not.
But I should not have mentioned any specific email, and that was my bad. Thanks,Mike

Wow he gives the DCI to Dirk then comes in and gives this one to Sims.  Amazing.  Propose an Ogre solo and vote yes.

The Nomads would like to point out that I WILL throw the game to the Ogres and keep all units in positions to screw all other powers. By my reckoning, he is the one who has stabbed me the least.
Enjoy Winter. I assure you that you won't enjoy Spring.

Theres a lesson there about what someone will do when he's getting
ganged up on. Don't try to cut people out of the draw who can throw a
solo, right? Basic standard diplomacy doctrine.
You'd rather he just went quietly into the night? Well, so would I,
but you can't expect a diplomacy player of any caliber to do that. 8D

Hi All,Many apologies. I had one request for a deadline extension. The request was for one day, but I am having LASIK surgery this afternoon, so I probably won't be back on a computer until late tomorrow at best. Hopefully all goes well and I can get the results processed tomorrow afternoon, otherwise they will have to wait until Friday. If things go badly (ugh!), then I'll have my wife process the moves and I'll look for a replacement GM.

One thing I can tell you is that All Draw Proposals FAILed.  A very early NO vote killed them off. So be prepared to keep playing!
Thanks for you patience and understanding.

I don't know about you guys but I find Mike's capitalization of the word "FAILed" suspicious... It might be a suggestion that a

Fairy
Archer
Indian
Leprechaun

alliance is secretly plotting... I for one will not tolerate someone just dropping Indians willy-nilly into the game at this point and I think it's a little politically insensitive to suggest it Wink

all kidding aside, hope the surgery goes well Mike. I've considered LASIK for years (my prescription is horride, -11 in one eye and -11.75 in the other) so I'll be asking you in a month or so how you like it Wink

Yes and what kind of surgery is done by Leprechauns, Archers, Samurai, Indians(?) and Knights anyways?  That would be a crazy operating room.

BTW everyone I've talked to that's had it has liked it.

Garry,
Indians are experts at stealth, which is why you never see them. Have you not wondered why we had so many Map failures this go-round, after so many successful runs of Haven? It was not due to GM or player error, the Indians captured the armies involved. I've been trying hard to stay ahead of them, but they are fairly successful at hiding from me as well.

Garry,
Indians are experts at stealth, which is why you never see them. Have you not wondered why we had so many Map failures this go-round, after so many successful runs of Haven? It was not due to GM or player error, the Indians captured the armies involved. I've been trying hard to stay ahead of them, but they are fairly successful at hiding from me as well.

Indians? Aren't they nomadic? And if so why am I unable to see those units on the board and order them around? Or is that the issue...I WAS ordering them around and managed to do so soooo effectively that I led them to extinction too? Sigh. Maybe the FAILed was directed at me.

Hi All,
Many apologies.

Until I read "Kissinger, Schwarzenegger" I was wondering: The 4th Reich is Chinese and Indian?[ Disguised as refugees/immigrants we have sent our most brilliant people to take over the US from the inside.
They operate from behind the (top executives) lines and their mission is well hidden.]Smile

Seriously though, I find it incredible that so many pundits in the US are focusing on how the Banking sector will be negatively affected world-wide if the Euro collapses, but not looking at the bigger picture: National Debt.
If Greece pulls out of the Euro and goes back to the Drachma (or a new currency), it's current debts are totally devalued. Follow that with Italy & Spain doing the same, and much of Europe and the US are sitting on IOUs with no backing behind them.  What happens when you knock out the bottom row of a house of cards? The only ones left standing are the ones in a different house --- in this case, China!, who owes few and is owed by many!

The High School debate topic last year dealt with space, but much debate was held concerning the threat of war with China. I never believe that China will invade *anyone*, they haven't in the past (much) and I just don't see them changing so many years of history. Really, for an Imperial nation, they have not been very imperialistic. No invasion of Vietnam (or anywhere on the peninsula), no invasion of Korea -- even when Japan invaded them, they never invaded back.

That being said, if the rest of world lost all the backing for their national debts, China could win the "war" without firing a single shot.  Good thing I love egg rolls!

Avast me hearties!

It's a pleasure to say 'hello' to you all, now that Mike has ordered my predecessor to walk the plank and given me control of the Pirate kingdom.

I'll try and make contact with you all later this evening. In the meantime, please consider whatever your previous relationship with the Pirates to be reset - I'm looking forwards to talking with you all over a tot or two of rum, and seeing what kind of deals we might be able to put together.

And Chris - it's my pleasure. I know what a good player you are, and I'm really pleased you're able to continue in the game.

Jerome

I apologize for the confusion folks.

My life has been very hectic.  But not so hectic that I would take a replacement while another major power was in Civil Disorder.

For those of you who have written and gone unanswered, I will try to find time soon.

And WELCOME Jerome!  Thanks for being so flexible.

As it turns out, Chris has found some time in his schedule to continue on with this game! Yeah! (Personally I think the back-stabbing and negotiations are a stress-release from his everyday world)

So, Jerome is staying with us, but as the Pirate replacement!!!  No more NMRs!!!

Oh, and to the single person who sent Jerome an email, it has been deleted unread. So if there were negotiations/strategies concerning the Faeries, they fell on deaf ears; however if it was simply a "Welcome", well please resend it!

Thanks all for understanding!  The website will be updated later tonight.

Retreats for Fall 06:
Magicians: F Ske --> WSS
Trolls: F SFS --> WTH
Pirates: A NEM Disbands

Adjustments will come later, either much later when I get home, or a little while if I get enough done at work.  Feel free to figure out your adjustments on your own and send them to me.

Still, I think we can keep the Spring deadline for next Tuesday, don't you? In the meantime, get to know Jerome. He seems like a nice enough guy!

Hi All,We have officially entered the mid-game phase of our game. This is the phase when final alliances are usually made, when shaky alliances fall apart, and when the mettle of a GM is tested! How is the GM involved? This is the phase when orders aren't always checked carefully, when extensions are 'meant' to be sent but forgotten, when players start dropping out of contact, and when tough decision need to be made.

I was hoping this game would skip this phase and proceed directly to endgame, but alas on a board this large, that would be near impossible.
And so we suffer our first NMR power, most likely an Abandonment.  I tried several times to reach the affected party, but to no avail. However, the game must move on. We are already looking for a replacement player who knows his time will be fleeting in the next couple months and is sticking it out, but would like someone to take his position.  Trying to find 2 replacements at the same time is a death knell for a game and the rest of you shouldn't suffer that fate. The decision, following in Mike Sims' precedent, is to move forward with the abandoned party in Civil Disorder until a brave soul steps in to claim the crown. I will post another message to the Light Brigade attempting to locate our Knight in shining armor!

This is also the year to say Goodbye to 2 powers: Rogues and Magicians.  Thank you to Warren and Mark! You both persevered under tough conditions and I thank you for continuing to play even when it seemed hopeless.  Well done!

Betreff: Re: New Faerie!!! Since the Faeries had no retreats, there was no deadline change.
However, one of our illustrious members didn't notice he had a retreat, so I made the GM decision to push the deadline (plus I didn't get home until after midnight last night and wasn't about to process anything other than snores).
Of course you'll get an updated map with the retreats --- as long as I remember to attach it. Smile

Mike

Not that important... I'm sure everyone else will do the task for you. Wink By the way, Chris, do you want to stay on the game Mailing List or should I remove you? Thanks,Mike---------
