DC125 - Trouts Opinion - Map Notes - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Heya guys,

Some map notes - purely based on my own selfish opinion.

1. With the Arabian Desert as an impassible space, the Iraq / Israel truce is almost an inevitability. There is no incentive for the two to attack each other, as easier centers lie in the opposite direction for both nations. With a blue fleet in the Persian Gulf and a green in the Red Sea then naval movement is completely blocked in either direction. This renders the whole southern edge of the map as dead-space, and creates a strip of neutral provinces right up the middle that serve as a natural DMZ.

My question is that since this variant is based in modern times, what is the oil-rich Arabian peninsula doing out of the mix? It should be in play...

SUGGESTION: Add the Saudi Arabian Peninsula to the map and five new provinces:
- Saudi Arabia (supply center)
- Oman (supply center)
- Qatar
- United Arab Emirates
- Yemen (supply center)

Add at least four new water zones:
- Horn of Africa
- Gulf of Aden
- Arabian Sea
- Indian Ocean

This will drastically open up play on the southern edge and give Israel and the Eastern powers far more of an incentive to conflict with each other.

2. The island of Cyprus. Right now it is bordered by only one water zone and therefore a unit there cannot be dislodged. In addition, unless the Israeli player is an idiot he will win, hands down, in any race between him and Turkey to get there first.

SUGGESTION: - Move the East Med / GOI water border north so that it contacts Cyprus.
- Start Turkey off with a fleet in Adana

3. The Iranian position is possible weaker to start out with than even the Turkish one. None of Iran's home centers can mutually support each other - which is a MAJOR disadvantage if the chips are down and the position under-fire.

SUGGESTION: - Connect Aze and Teh along the Caspian Sea

4. The distance between Iraq and Israel. Right now, all other neighbouring nations are seperated by only one or two spaces - in some cases the home centers even border on each other. However, Iraq and Israel have three or four spaces between their home centers. Once again, this creates a situation where it makes no sense for one to attack the other - the other player would see such an attack coming a mile away

SUGGESTION: Redraw the middle provinces to reduce seperation between Iraq and Israel.

I have more thoughts, of course, but those are the four that come to mind first.. Cheers,

Trout

DC125 - Turkish EOG - One Lucky Duck - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Heya guys,

Figured I'd dive into the water here first with an EOG. My congratulations to Mike for the solo win... Although for me at least the writing was on the walls from the end of the first game year. As for myself, somehow I eked out a survival in this one which I humbly consider a small victory all in itself.

I think my first thoughts when I saw that I was Turkey and fully looked at the map was something along the lines of 'Damn am I screwed'. Sandwiched between Israel and Russia as it is, Turkey is very much the lame duck of this board. In fact, I can say with confidence that the only reason I managed to hang around till the endgame was because Russia went into CD and I had no northern front to contend with.

Before I get into map notes - strategy. This game was all about Israeli containment for me - and the result speaks all for itself. Until the last couple of turns, I threw everything I had at Mike and he just kept coming. Without assistance from Iraq to assist my efforts, Mike overpowered me at every turn. I managed to beat him to Lebanon early on, but knew that I wouldn't be able to hold it. After that, it was just a matter of the long retreat...

It was fairly clear from early on that Mike and Jon had formed an alliance - both agreeing to move north and not disturb the efforts of each other. Both Ray and I tried all we could to disrupt that - even in the end, out of desperation, telling them that I was going to throw the game to one or the other. At the very end, Jon suggested that he would hold my last unit in place to prevent Sims from taking it - but it was too little too late at that point and I had already agreed to help Mike win.

As frustrating as the game was though sometimes, I have to say that it was an interesting time. The variant has quite a bit of potential - if the map is tweaked in the right places I would love to be involved in the next playtest. Thanks to Tony for GMing, Jon and Mike for providing such brilliant adversaries, and Ray for being the guy on the other end of the line that I wrote to and said 'Well what the hell do we do now?'...

Cheers guys,

Trout

DC125 Back on Track - test_gm   (Sep 13, 2007, 12:00 am)
Here is the Roster and Special Rules.... Deadline for Spring 2000 is next Friday November 2nd (at)5PM EST (-5GMT)

I am pretty Liberal GM. If I can figure it out then it works for me. All Adjudications are in EST (-5 GMT).
Also you should put in subject line the following format: GAMEID: Season year country .. Ex: DC125: Spring 2000 Isreal:
I will send out a separate map and list of abbreviations to avoid confusion:

Special Game Considerations: .

1. Istanbul functions identically to standard Constantinople. Fleets can not
pass from AEG-BLA (canal)

2. Egypt functions identically to standard Constantinople. Fleets can not
pass from EMed-Red (canal)

3. SAS is a water+land region. Armies can not move onto the south shore of
SAS. Fleets may enter and exit SaS from Aqa, Ela, Sin, and Red.
Armies may enter and exit only from Ela and Sin.

4. Fleets may pass from RED-PER.

5. A Fleet must go through Ist to get to BUL.

6. Convoys THROUGH any of the 2 canal spaces (IST and EGY) are in order for this game.

7. Fleets may not be built on the Dead Sea or the lake bordering Tabriz.

8. 14 SC are required to win the game.
