Thanks, Nick

A&E 090205 / DC240: deadline tomorrow night - NickHiggins   (Apr 15, 2009, 10:18 pm)
A&E 090205 / DC240: The deadline is tomorrow night, and I am woefully short of orders. Get the orders (and press!) in!

By the way, I have a soccer game tomorrow night, so the adjudication will be a bit late, or possibly Friday morning. Sorry in advance -- Nick

A&E 090205 / DC240: Fall 1766 Retreat season a... - NickHiggins   (Apr 11, 2009, 3:10 pm)
A&E 090205 / DC240: The Fall 1766 Retreat season has been adjudicated. Our Spanish player Isaac informed me earlier that he typically does not access the internet on weekends, and so I am taking the liberty of retreating his unit to the only possible location (Gascony). He will still need to disband one unit in winter, and can effectively retreat OTB by disbanding A Gas, so there is really only one reasonable choice for the retreat.

The deadline for Winter 1766 is Mon Apr 13th, and the deadline for Spring 1767 is Thu Apr 16th.

A&E 090205 / DC240: Fall 1766 season adjudicat... - Sturmkraehe   (Apr 11, 2009, 12:36 am)
Sigh, my soul is cut to the quick by this infamy though I secretly wish I had been in a position to do the same. The stab did not really come as a surprise though I had hoped that Denmark would prove the faithful friend he had promised at the beginning of the game. Alas, something is rotten in Denmark and it wasn't the jetost Wink

Enjoy the rest of the game, I will be watching from the sidelines and will provide whatever color commentary I can recall when this thing is done.

Subject: A&E 090205 / DC240: Fall 1766 season adjudicated - Hej Da to Kurt

.MsgBody-text, .MsgBody-text * { font: 10pt monospace; } A&E 090205 / DC240: After the stab of Spain in the spring, I thought we were surely finished with major dramatic moves this year, but in fact that was just the prelude to an even more eventful fall season. The biggest news is the sudden elimination of Sweden, who was stabbed by his previously stalwart Danish ally in combination with his long-time Russian foe. Kurt, you played well, but just couldn't quite manage to get the needed breakthrough against Russia, and that lack of expansion meant that time started working against you. Hopefully our paths will cross again soon.

Sweden's death means that Denmark gains two supply centers this year, and Tsar Nathan gains a vital SC to offset the loss of Kiev to the Polish-Saxons. It will be interesting to see how the alliances in the north shake out with this new scenario.

Moving to the other corner of the board, Iberia fell shockingly fast, with all 3 Spanish SCs taken by a different power in one year (surely a first!). Then again, it is pretty rare that Spain will convoy an Austrian army into Barcelona. Isaac has managed to salvage the situation to a large degree by acquiring some beachfront property on the Gulf of Lyon.

With some of the "original 2 SC" powers dislocated from their starting home SCs, now is a good time remind everybody of which SCs are the "third home SCs" for those players. On the map, a home SC (one that can be built in) is always marked by a circular SC marker, and a non-home SC (cannot build) is always marked by a square SC marker.

Denmark: Mecklenburg
Poland-Saxony: Konigsberg (now under Prussian control)
Spain: Marseille
Turkey: Tunis

The retreat deadline is basically ASAP, I'll adjudicate over the weekend when I receive them. Orders are needed from Austria and Spain. The deadline for Winter 1766 is Mon Apr 13th, and those will not be impacted by the retreats (unless retreats are OTB). The deadline for Spring 1767 is Thu Apr 16th.

The late player was Nathan of Russia, a fact that he acknowledges in his press. Nathan is on vacation in Chile - wish I was there! Speaking of press, we have 3 submissions this week, including our first observer press (always welcome!).

PRESS #1 (RUSSIAN)
Russian Press: Dateline: Moscow: Czar Nathan of Russia has gone missing! Somehow his attempt to sail around to visit the various capitals of Europe from St. Petersburg ran awry with Russian knowledge of the seas, and he was last seen outside of the port of Valpariso seeking to find directions to Madrid. Who knows when he will be seen again.

PRESS #2 (Anonymous Observer)

Observer to Great Britain: Let me be among the first to admit that I’m one of those who is chuckling, saying “same ole Frank”. I guess I shouldn't save you a lounge chair too quickly here on the beach of Tahiti. Speaking of '70s songs, just make sure your naval power doesn't go the way of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Observer to Denmark-Norway: Dave, I'm really pulling for you to continue a successful coastal crawl along the Baltic.

Observer to Poland & Saxony: Matt, I've really enjoyed your press clippings. Please keep them up. I hope you can somehow consolidate your units to get them into a mutually supportive position.

Observer to Austria: Jorge, you opened the game with skill and strength. But now you've encountered the real Austrian quandry. How you get beyond that 8-10 center plateau in the middle of the board and everyone screaming "early leader!" It's a riddle that few have solved.

Press #3 (British)
Press:
AP London: haha....all of a sudden, France became a real fighting ground. This should be fun! Now go, or I shall taunt you a second time.

England to Turkey: Robert, you were abnormally quiet this season. I was too of course, but with the hours I've been putting in at work, that's sadly been more of the norm. I hope you aren't buying into the "must stop England" rhetoric.

England to Denmark: David, I'm assuming the pressure you're getting to attack me must be getting fierce. Know that I will not be comfortable until we're of equal size and strength. (I would postulate that you wouldn't be comfortable until that time either) ; )

England to Anonymous: You're doing a bang up job of deflecting the threat.

A&E 090205 / DC240: Orders were not received from one player. In this situation, the deadline is delayed for 24 hours to Fri Apr 10th at 10 pm USA eastern time. All players can continue diplomacy and submit new orders until that new deadline. If orders are still not received at that time, then there will be an NMR (all units hold) for that player, and they will have until Mon night to establish contact with me to keep their place in the game.

A&E 090205 / DC240: Spring 1766 retreat season... - MattKelly   (Apr 04, 2009, 4:23 pm)
Attired In flowered shirts, Bermuda shorts, white socks, black shoes and armed with maps and tourist brochures thousands of Polish nationals have flocked to Kiev to enjoy the the sites and night life of this historic city. While acknowledging the difficulties in accommodating such an influx of tourists a rather frazzled Mayor of Kiev was still able to state with a smile that, "they (the Poles) were a shot in the arm to the city's tourism industry."

A&E 090205 / DC240: adjudication error - NickHiggins   (Apr 03, 2009, 8:03 am)
A&E 090205 / DC240: I have to correct a major adjudication error from last night. I used the wrong set of orders from Frank. Two orders are different:

A HeW - BaW (instead of A HeW - Bur)
F Pic S A Gas - Bre (instead of F Pic - Bre)

There are a lot of differences resulting from these orders. For the first one, the support of Austrian A BaW for Austrian A Bohemia - Bavaria now is cut, and so A Bohemia - Bavaria fails. Austrian A Switzerland - Burgundy to succeeds, because it no longer bounces with the unit arriving from Hesse-Westphalia.

For the second set of orders, the Spanish A Gascony to Brest order now succeeds, as it does not bounce with the British fleet from Picardy (and, indeed, has its support).

The correction adjudication is below, and the new map is attached. I apologize for the error.

By the way, there are no changes to the retreat order situation (all retreats remain in the east).

A&E 090205 / DC240: The Spring 1766 season has been adjudicated. In a blockbuster season with dramatic action all over the board, the top billing has to go to the convoy of the French army from Brest to Portugal, courtesy of the Royal Navy. Suddenly, the Iberian motherland is laid bare, and there will surely be some diplomatic fireworks in response (indeed, there are already some in the press...).

Staying in the Med, Turkey recaptured the Adriatic, but Austria's fleet found a home in Two Sicilies. The Polish-Saxon army was knocked out of Lithuania, with a Prussian army now enjoying free rein over the plains. Poland-Saxony certainly has an interesting retreat decision to make at this point, as the Russian SCs of Moscow and Kiev must look tempting. While that is a potential setback for Russia, Russia met a true setback in the north this spring, as the Tsar's men finally captured Karelia, but at the very heavy price of losing control of the Gulf of Bothnia (contrary to his . We finish with Denmark, whose appetite was apparently whetted by their appetizer in Mecklenburg last fall, and they have followed that up with a second successive SC gain in Berlin.

The deadline for the Spring 1766 Retreat season is Friday, April 3rd at 10 pm USA Eastern time. However, if my Friday night goes well, then the adjudication will more likely be noon-ish on Saturday. Orders are needed from Prussia, Poland, and Russia. The next major deadline is for Fall 1766 on Thursday, April 9th.

Before the adjudication, we have four(!) sets of press, all of them very entertaining from the neutral perspective:

PRESS #1: British
England to Spain: You might be surprised (shocked) at these moves, but the English government felt they were necessary. In short, the consensus feeling was that you were more concerned with getting centers immediately than focusing on the task at hand, and were not comfortable hearing that the centers would come). When we’re bickering over who gets a center in the spring, we’re not in the right place.
England to France: Con-voy! (CW McCall song from the 70s, and I don’t even like country music). If you bought into the plan, we’re going to have a load of fun.

England to Turkey: you're going to be mad. I hope my move can be explained during the summer, but I couldn't put up with Isaac's worry about centers over need. I think France will be better for me in the west, and I hope my hurting of Isaac in the west can be overcome in your east. I'm sorry I didn't talk to you about it, but I feared your reaction would change the spring. I await your response cringedly
England to Denmark: Welcome to Berlin? I hope you’re feeling the love from England, because I might have just lost not one, but possibly two southern allies. And if Mike took my convoy and threw it in my face, I might have truly made a mess of this.
England to GM: Thanks as always for running such a smooth game to this point. [Nick: aw, thanks]
England to Austria: Jorge…if I completely missed the ball on this one, and I lose France, Spain, Turkey, and Denmark because of my moves, care to open up talks again? Your embassy in London, though empty, still has the heat turned on (and most of the leaks patched).
England to Peanut Gallery: I’m wondering who in the group is chuckling, saying “same ole Frank”. Haha….maybe all of you.

PRESS #2 (Anonymous)

Congrats, Frank, on winning this game. You've got Denmark as a dog, Spain as a stooge, France as fodder and Germany as a gift. There's no way you're going to be stopped from here. We may as well vote on it now and get it over with.
PRESS #3 (Russia)
Russian Press: Dateline St. Petersburg: The formerly besieged Army of St. Petersburg has decided to stir at last. General Ivan Illich has formed plans, with the consent of the Czar, to push Sweden permanently out of Russian territory with an aim at decisive victory in Karelia. Word has it that since the winter has lasted long in this territory that the Northern Armies of Russia are equipping for their battle with skis to better reclaim their territories.

Russia to Sweden: I hope you found a smarter use for your fleet than trying to attack the Gulf of Bothnia

Russia to Denmark: I hope you have seen that my A Novgorad has no aggressive intentions towards your lands.

Russia to Poland: What is the purpose of that A Lithuania?

Russia to the rest of Europe: Your ambassadors are welcome in Moscow. It should be a bit cooler in the summer than your lands, and we will make them feel quite at home. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Press #4 (Danish)

Denmark:

Almost anyone would have believed that in the middle years of the 18th century Denmark was being watched by intelligences greater than their own. And as we the Danish people busied ourselves about our various concerns, they observed and studied, the way a Dane with a fishing net might scrutinise the herring that swarm and multiply in the sea. With infinite complacency, Danes went to and fro across the Baltic, confident of our dominance over - or at least our presence in - this small patch of sea. Yet across the gulf of space known as Novograd, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic regarded Christiania with envious eyes and slowly and surely made their plans against us.

A&E 090205 / DC240: The Winter 1765 season has been adjudicated. The Med is getting crowded with fleets, and the Danish army has been formed for the first time (it can only strive for the same standard of non-movement as the Danish fleet). Meanwhile, we have another entry in the war of words over the public airwaves.

The deadline for Spring 1766 season is Thu Apr 2nd.

Press:
England to Anonymous: Pfft! For what it’s worth, Denmark only told me that he was getting pressure from several sides to attack me. I told him to go ahead and take Mec. The rest was guessing on my part, so don’t throw David under the bus. And you’re wrong about France too. I asked Isaac to move to Gascony in case France attacked. Just like I’ve had many chances to take Brest, preparing for something and actually doing it are two different things.

A&E 090205 / DC240: I forgot the most important reason why this is an unusually busy retreat season: 2 sets of press!

Press #1 (Anonymous)
Corrected Press:

AP England: Hearing rumors from the board, I've put in orders to attemp to not lose BOTH Han and Mec Correction: orders to take HeW from Han. If I lost one, I sure I hope I lost it to Denmark Correction: no hoping involved. Britain intended to give Denmark Mec, which is why Ber wasn't attacked, and Denmark used Hol instead of Bal to take it. Of all the things I've heard, the only one that I can process is that David truly needs and deserves a build. Beyond that, it gets a little fuzzy.

England to France: Once again I have not attacked you, Mike. Correction: Britain attacked and took HeW. But if you attacked me in Hanover, my fleets are taking the gloves off Correction: the fleets were ordered to block a French retreat from HeW to UPr. I think you need to look as to where Jorge is going to look to get his 15 centers. HeW is one of them.

England to Prussia: We have just not hit it off this game. I blame myself and my lack of communication. But see my note to France. Helping Austria against Turkey is just mindboggling. The Turk, and the Spaniard working with the Turk in Italy, are the only things preventing your whole world from becoming Austrian. The BEST thing in the world for you is Turkey having the advantage over Austria in the south. Rumor has it you're attacking Mother England too. Correction: no rumor. Denmark passed along the intelligence - no one else knew. If I'm willing to disappear from Han and Mec, Correction: Britain already gave Mec to Denmark, and Prussia is in no position to take Han are you prepared to help against a 10 center Austria? Correction: if France retreats to Dre, Austria is at 7 - just like Britain.

England to Austria: At this point in the game, Jorge, you deserve the win. Your tireless diplomacy continues to affect those that could do you harm, and persuades them to turn a blind eye to the fact that you need their centers to meet the victory condition Correction: Austria only needs his enemies' centers. Hopefully the small group Correction: Spain and Turkey outnumber Austria 9-7, plus Poland that is working against you is able to build a southern wall, forcing you north for gains. And if so, maybe that will open an eye or two.

England to Denmark: Truly, David, if you attacked, I hope you attacked Mec and got it Correction: see above. If you did, I implore you to see the board and build an army to come south Correction: already agreed upon, which is why Denmark didn't cover Hol while "attacking" Britain - he can now convoy to Ber*. A fleet build in Chr will only force me to fight for the North Sea, which will allow France the ability to turtle, which will allow Jorge the free reign in the north that he needs. Please write.

* Russian moves may result in an army in Chr instead.

England to Spain: Isaac....I need the services of your army. Can we take out Mike now? Correction: already agreed upon. Additionally, conflicts with plea to Mike to see the light (see above).

PRESS #2 (Turkish)
Apparently Austria contends that Turkey has broken agreements and committed acts of aggression towards Austria that compel Austria to focus all attention on Turkey, which has caused Austria to suffer loses and has allowed others, particularly Britain, to become dangerously successful.

Turkey does not appreciate being portrayed as dishonest or as an aggressor.

In Winter 1763, Austria made a demand of Turkey that Turkey either commit to supporting Austria to Two Sicilies, or Austria would build a fleet and take it herself. At this time Austria controlled seven supply centers, was getting three builds, and with an army built in Vienna could easily have taken neutral centers Bavaria, Switzerland, Tuscany, and Papal States without any assistance from Turkey or any opposition from anyone else. Meanwhile Turkey had three supply centers, Spain refused to demiltarize the Western Med, and Spain and Austria had already allied to dispossess France of Marseilles. Turkey informed Austria that neither option offered was acceptable, as in either case Turkey must use valuable units to help a center already more than twice its size grow, ensuring that Turkey would not be able to gain a supply center for herself in 1764, as well as ensuring Spain would seize control of the western med. Turkey let Austria know in no uncertain terms that a fleet built in Vienna in winter 1763 would lead to hostilities between Austria and Turkey. The exact text sent to Austria read,

"Now I suppose that since I have failed to commit to supporting you to Two Sicilies that you will build a fleet. Let me be clear, if you do so, there will be no more goodwill from Turkey towards Austria. Such a build will condemn us to war. Is it a war that might well be my destruction, yes? But I would rather go down attempting to stand and fight for my survival than to willingly bend over while you shove yourself deep in my rear."

Austria built that fleet anyway. That was a choice Austria made, a choice to focus all attention on Turkey. Turkey merely responded in kind, in the exact manner Turkey informed Austria it would before Austria made that choice. If Austria would now like to choose to focus its attention elsewhere than on Turkey and the Adriatic, it is more than welcome to do so. But all should realize Turkey is in no way forcing Austria to focus all her attention on the Adriatic region. It is Austria who is doing both the choosing and the forcing.

Haha….well said to you both! To Anonymous, I say Touché! Not entirely accurate, but a well struck volley none-the-less.

With people dancing in the streets as the Polish Eagle was unfurled over Buda Castle it was announced by Supreme Headquarters that Budapest would now be known as Chicago. Riders have been sent to the great capitals of Europe asking that in future communiques that the abbreviation "Bud" be replaced by "Chi."

A&E 090205 / DC240: I have a small correction to announce. The adjudication states that there are no possible retreats for the British army in Mecklenburg. However, this is due to a flaw in my adjudication programming.

(feel free to skip the following paragraph if you don't care why)

I programmed it such that first it looks for any empty provinces to retreat to, and then it looks to see if anybody moved there this year (implying a standoff, because the province is empty). Because the French army in Hesse-Westphalia moved to Hanover, Hanover was adjudicated to be an invalid retreat. However, there was not a standoff -> the British army from Hanover defeated and dislodged the French army in Hesse-Westphalia. Therefore, Hanover is a valid retreat location (right?).

(return to regularly scheduled programming)

Anyway, the final outcome is that the British unit has a valid retreat now to Hanover. Sorry about the incorrect adjudication.

A&E 090205 / DC240: Fall 1765 season adjudicat... - NickHiggins   (Mar 28, 2009, 12:16 pm)
A&E 090205 / DC240: The Fall 1765 season has been adjudicated. Sorry for the delay, but I am just now recovering from Friday night. Thanks to Frank for getting his orders in. As a general note, if anybody ever needs a deadline delay, please don't hesitate to ask.

This season was worth the wait, as the map-wide war between the two opposing sides is fascinating. There was progress made all over the board, with some successes (and failures) for each side. Looking to Scandinavia, Czar Nathan capitalized on his clever move to the Gulf of Bothnia last year, and with an army in Novgorod, there are a lot of possibilities for next year. Congratulations to Denmark-Norway, for gaining their long-awaited third supply center in Mecklenburg. That British loss (seemingly little mourned, if one reads the press) was offset by a gain at French expense in Baden-Wurttemburg.

Turning to the Austro-Ottoman battlefront, I'm guessing that there will be more joy at the Sublime Porte than at the Hofburg, as the Polish attempt to capture Budapest succeeded, and Turkish soldiers are now making themselves at home in Morocco. On the other hand, an Austrian fleet enjoys the freedom of the Adriatic now, and the Spanish gambit to capture Tuscany fell short.

Retreat orders are needed from three players: Austria, France, and Turkey. Please send in those orders ASAP, and hopefully I will be able to adjudicate that tonight or tomorrow morning.

The deadline for Winter 1765 is Mon, Mar 30th, and Spring 1766 is Thu, Apr 2nd.

Before the adjudication, we have two sets of press. By the way, anonymous press is permitted.

Press #1 (Russian):

Dateline: Gulf of Bothnia: Russian sailors are in a tizzy over how to move their fleet, since it is so long since they have been to sea. "How do we work all this rigging and these sails," one can hear the sailors mutter underneath their breath. Admiral Ivan Ryllich of the Baltic Fleet stated to our reporter, "I hope we can find a good port soon, because there are a lot of barnacles that need to get scraped off of our ships. We've had them holed up in St. Petersburg too long and we need to make sure our ships are seaworthy. Finding some good Swedish trees should help us fix some of our hulls from the effects of the lengthy drydocking."

Press #2 (British)

England to GM, players, and peanut gallery: Sorry for the late orders.

My fault, gang. Many apologies from England (and Granite Bay, for that matter).

I'm at the tail end of my third 16 hour day in a row (my project went to hell Tuesday). The crisis is now averted (one would think it tough to get into a crisis on a 16 mo bridge construction project, but you haven't met my contractor or my client), and I'm going to bed.

I will get in my orders tomorrow, and tomorrow night, I look forward to asking most of you what game you're watching when the guy so beautifully (truly) telling you all that he's not the problem grows two and the guy he's pointing to as the big threat loses one. Almost makes me wonder if Wayne Bailey is playing under an alias.

Sleep well (though you should all be sleeping well right now).
