DC271 Cimarra - Russian EOG Statment - luckyllama   (Mar 06, 2010, 11:56 am)
Thanks everyone for a great game and thanks to Garry for his sterling GM'ing - I agree with Darryl that the NMRs did spoil things somewhat, and I'd prefer a game that found replacements, even though I know this can break the flow of a game.

From the beginning I wanted peace in the north whilst working to take out one of my southern neighbours, preferably Turkey, and fortunately (or so I thought) the diplomacy fell into place; in particular Nick was easy to work with and I could see our alliance being one that would last. Darryl covered his plans well and his attack came as a surprise; fairly quickly it became clear we were facing an E/F/G - whether Turkey was tied into this I don't know but either way with the three remaining powers already at war with Turkey my position was pretty bad, as I would clearly bear the brunt of the attack from the west, at least at first.

I was rescued by the British and French NMRs and thought an approach to Germany would be worth a try - luckily Darryl proved to be a flexible player who was open to a change of plan, which removed the threat I had been facing and allowed me to rejoin the war against Turkey. Darryl and I talked a lot and he was understandably keen for me to attack Austria whilst he moved west - at that stage I wasn't falling for that one but wanted to keep the alliance with Austria going whilst I strengthened my position. However I could see that once the Turkish centres were taken, I had no obvious route to grow, whereas both Germany and Austria could stroll west and pick up all the empty or NMR centres one by one. Once they started building units from these gains I would be in no position to attack either of them and, even in an alliance, would be the junior partner.

The critical turn for me was the one where I moved on Bulgaria and secured all the Turkish units for myself - the decision was a difficult one since my alliance with Nick was a strong one and we had agreed to go for the draw - but two-way draws are almost impossible in the game. When I looked at the position before that move, my situation was actually extremely dangerous, had Austria decided to move against me that turn - he had at least one guaranteed gain in Italy, could have moved into Warsaw, and closed me out of the Balkans.

A stab is only worthwhile in my view if it significantly changes the balance of a game - stabbing for a centre or two isn't worth it if there's no way to follow through since gaining an extra enemy normally cancels out any benefit. In this particular case I was lucky that the moves all came off as planned (and I will confess to reassuring Darryl that Munich was safe and tempting him to consider Mun-Tyl, which deprived Austria of a build - sorry Nick) and in one turn I went from third place to largest power.

The other factor that went in my favour was the bad feeling between A/G from game start - I kept talking to Nick after the stab and also to Darryl - there were enough NMR centres in the north to get me close to the 18 without having to follow through against Austria - stabbing him once was bad enough and I was really reluctant to break my word again. Hence for the end game I simply planned to sit back in the centre and get enough fleets to pick up what I needed in the north. Getting a fleet into the central Med avoided the need to take anything from Austria in the south - I could have sailed on and taken the 18th from France or Italy, but in the event once the outcome of the game was clear I thought better to put everyone out of their misery by taking Naples from Nick (sorry again).

Despite the NMRs I really did enjoy the game - my first solo win for as long as I can remember - and would happily meet any of the (active) players in this game again (so long as they can forgive and forget, of course). Thanks again guys!

Ian

In my opinion CDs should be a last resort, used only when there's just a dot or two left and no takers to play it out. Others obviously feel differently. But Darryl's suggestion to call a game a DIAS after a certain number of countries go into CD is worth considering. It's not much of a game at that point, and winning becomes almost completely based on the luck of where the leaderless countries happen to be.

DC271 Cimarra - German EOG Statment - dipknight   (Mar 04, 2010, 12:27 pm)
From the German Government in Exile;

Not much to tell from my point of view.  I worked it out with England and France at the begining of the game so that we were allies looking to pit the west against the east.  Unfortunately, they both fell into Civil Disorder, immediately after my direct attack upon Russia.

At that point, I contracted both Austria and Russia to try and work out a three way draw . . . but of course all of the abandoned resources were behind me and, therefore, left me unreasonably situated to take advantage of them without direct conflict.  In fact, Austria told me directly that he felt he could do better without me than with me and ceased all communications.

Russia, on the other hand, wanted Scandinavia for his support.  At first, all that I could see was that would give Russia two avenues with which to attack my home supplies, so I was very hard set against that idea.  At least, until the alliance between Austria and Russia became obvious; then, I really had no choice but to give Russia what ever he wanted, even the Solo.

If Austria had contacted me requesting support against Russia, I would have been more than open minded.  But then, I suppose that I could have contacted him at any point also.  Except that Austria had rebuffed me so hard after England and France was in CD that I felt it should be up to him to make first contact this time . . . which never happened.

Congratulation Ian on your solo victory.  I would have enjoyed this game better if we had found replacement players . . . even if they all turned against me at that point.  Thanks Garry for GM'ing the game.  However, if you are going to continue allowing countries to fall into CD without seeking replacement players, you might want to consider calling the game a DIAS when three countries or more are in CD.  I don't believe I had any chance once England, France and Italy were all out of the game.  It only made sense for Russia and Austria to attack me and my home supplies were immediately on the front line.  My choices were both bad; go for more supplies and hope that I had somewhere to build them or defend my home supplies and hope I could snag one or two extra while defending.

Thanks again, I hope to see you guys in another game at some point.

Game Over! A Russian Solo Is Achieved As Russia Takes the Final 3 Centers and Defends Bulgaria and Rumania.
Congrats to Ian and All Thanks to Darryl and Nick for Playing Out Their Countries
A Game Definitely Affected by NMR's and CD's is Complete

All,
Let's take nothing away from Ian; he pulled off a solo and that is a difficult proposition regardless of circumstances. This game seemed troubled once we saw several Western power CD's. However, I still expected to see this end in a 2 or 3-way draw. I am not sure what exactly occurred that prevented A/G from working together to stop the solo but somehow Ian was able to keep that animosity alive and take advantage.

All in all an interesting game. Also proof that not all NMR's aid the nearest neighbor! Thanks to the players who held on throughout to play this game. I wish you all better luck on future games and hope that NMR's are a think of the past on our site. I know that they are top of mind for both Mike and myself; we want to find a way to reduce them.

Feel free to send end-game statements to the dc271(at)diplomaticcorp.com address.

All the best,
Garry

All,
Sorry for the delay. We were missing a vote and I could not allow that to be ignored. Our EGPs fail so we move on. Orders were:

Russia - Armies everywhere except for a F in StP (nc)
Austria - F in Tri
Germany - remove F in Bre
France - GM disbands F MAO and F GoL (per standard rules)

We move on to Spring 1907. Those orders are due Sunday the 21st at 6pm CST.

Russia Builds Four Again!! Is a Solo in the Offing?

All,
Lots to discuss! First we owe thanks to Jim for sticking through to the end. Sorry you could not get a survival but glad you stuck with us (unlike others). Second, we have a new set of EGP's: a Russian solo and a 3-way DIAS (Russia, Austria and Germany). Please vote on both with your Winter orders. If both pass, the most inclusive one (the 3-way) would be accepted.

Third, we had retreats needed but both only had one option so I took it: A Kie could retreat to Hol and A Mun could retreat to Bur. If Darryl would prefer OTB for either he can let us know with Winter adjustments. Fourth, we have Winter adjustments needed:

Austria builds 1
Germany removes 1 (unless one of the retreats was OTB which really is the same difference)
Russia builds 4

That should set us up for Winter. Please get Winter adjustments in by Thursday Feb 11 at 6pm CST.

Thanks.
Garry

Turkey Survives Another Year!Russia Turns on Austria and Makes Gains Everywhere It Seems.
Germany Has Losses But Offsets Them By Finally Taking A Center in Anarchy
Italy Does Manage to Take a Former Italian Anarchy Center to Ease Some of the Pain

All,
I apologize for the delay. Ian did get his orders to me Sunday or Monday but this has been a tough week. As a side note, I thought that I found them while he was gone (in the wrong folder...not sure how that happened since I looked high and low for them initially) but I wanted to verify that they were the correct ones. What he forwarded me matched what I had found so all is copacetic.

Well, that is except for the action! What action! What suspense! What fun! Definitely an interesting turn of events and certainly so given the way we seemed to be going for a bit. 4 players who HAVEN'T gone into anarchy and all still alive!

We have some action for the Winter:

Russia Builds 4
Germany Removes 1
Austria Builds 1
France Removes 1
Italy Removes 1

If there is any question about how removes are done for Anarchy countries, please consult my house rules or the DC House Rules (they will help give insight into what the GM will remove for France and Italy).

Let's set the Winter deadline for Friday the 15th at 6pm CST.

DC271 Cimarra - F05 Delay - garry.bledsoe   (Dec 29, 2009, 11:01 am)
All,I cannot seem to find Russia's orders. I feel like I have misplaced them but I have looked in every conceivable folder and cannot find them. Normally this would not be an issue BUT Ian is out of the country with VERY limited access to the internet until the 10th of January. If perchance he gets them in sooner, we can move on. However, I am not placing him into NMR because a) he told me of the impending trip; b) I should have discovered this before he left; c) I feel certain I am at fault.

So, we shall wait. I have all orders except his and I am happy to take replacement orders in the interim. Barring him being able to send them in sooner, we are on hold until Jan 10th.

All apologies.

All,Turned out to be a very slight delay indeed (thanks Ian!).

Our EGP was voted down so we proceed to Spring 1905. Russia builds a shiny new F in StP(nc) and we are set to go.

Spring's deadline will be this coming Sunday at 6pm CST (I felt good about a shorter deadline because I already have some orders AND we had a little bit of time waiting for Winter that you guys could already be talking).

We have a Turkish retreat from Black Sea to Ankara and one new Fleet and Army build (StPnc and Vienna).

Most interestingly, we have a 3-way draw proposed between Russia/Austria/Germany. That would mean survival for Turkey and Italy. Please vote on these for our next turn. IF the draw passes, it occurs before the turn's moves. IMPORTANT: a lack of vote by one of the 5 remaining countries simply counts as an abstention and does NOT affect the passing of a vote! Thus, if someone forgets to vote or has an NMR, it would not reject an EGP if all of the other 4 vote yes.

I will send out a map later tonight.

All,
Thanks to Ian for pointing out that I misspoke below. Turkey DID lose a unit through the year so they do NOT owe a removal even if BLA retreats to Ank or Arm.

All,
I am afraid this is a long and late adjudication. I did EVERYTHING I could to try and get Italy and France via email but to no avail. I am forced to put France into CD and Italy gets an NMR this turn. Let's hope he rejoins us and we don't lose him for good.

I agonized over this. I don't like having England AND France in CD but that is the way things go. Replacements are not something that I believe in and we are addressing the overall issue on the site as a whole. As people realize that NMRs are a bad part of the game, hopefully we will weed them out and get rid of some of the ridiculous, lackadaisical attitude that seems to be pervading some of our games. I know that NMRs and CDs seem to make the game unbalanced but no more so than changing out players mid-stream and injecting new personalities. Plus, the assignment was random so anyone could have been lucky enough to have their neighbors go into CD...get the pun?

We have one retreat needed:

TURKISH F BLA can retreat OTB or to Ank or Arm

Given that there is just one retreat, let's do builds/removes simultaneously:

Turkey remove 1 unless F BLA retreats OTB
Austria build 1
Russia build 1

Our deadline is Monday, November 16th at 6pm CST. I apologize for the delay but I am out of the country starting tomorrow.

As a site moderator, I apologize to those of you who are playing hard and engaged. I hate the NMR epidemic and want to do everything I can to get them to be less prevalent on our site.

All,I am still missing orders from several players. We go into a 24 hour grace period because one of the said players has not used his grace period thus far. I will extend our deadline until tomorrow night. After that we proceed with NMR's.

Let's hope that doesn't happen. Individual chastising to follow.

.ExternalClass .ecxhmmessage P {padding:0px;} .ExternalClass body.ecxhmmessage {font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana;} Something in the Western Water? Both France and England NMR!
We Bid Cheers to England. They Stand in Anarchy.
Bulgaria is POUNDED and Falls to the Austrians
Germany Must Have Sensed Something Because They About Face.
Italians Play Wargames with the Clueless French Divisions

Sigh. Well, I guess I saw it coming but we have England in Anarchy [all units stand and have to be forced out of position] and we bid him farewell and banned from the site barring some brilliant explanation.

Alas we ALSO lost Kent this round. Hopefully he is not gone as well and just had a holiday or something that interfered.

We need no retreats as all units dislodged were also annihilated since there was no retreat possible. Therefore we move to the Fall of 1903. A note on the maps: RP was giving me issues with trying to get the final placement map after orders. Will try again later and send along if I can get it to work. Sorry but the .dpy is up to date.

Orders are due by Wednesday Nov 4th at 6pm CST. Sorry for the slightly shorter deadline but I am trying to get Winter done also before I leave town on vacation for a week starting next Saturday.

DC271 Cimarra - W02 Adjustments - garry.bledsoe   (Oct 21, 2009, 5:10 pm)
All,
Here are our adjustments. I will add a map later tonight [yes, for real this time Darryl] but I wanted to share them now [I am currently at work].

New German F in Berlin which is interesting because...
Russia scuttles its F in the Baltic.
Austria calls on the local Viennese militia to join the cause and conscripts them into the Army.

Our next deadline for Spring 1903 will be Wednesday October 28th at 6pm CST.

Jim - if you are out there, I would love to hear from you!
