DC-277 Change of GM - TheWhiteWolf   (Oct 19, 2009, 2:30 pm)
Good players of DC-277,
I don't know if you're all aware of Alan's situation, but he's asked me to step in as GM until he can get his computer woes taken care of. While I've never GMed the Modern variant before, I'll do my best to make this transition, my tenure with you, and the switch back to Alan's control as smooth as possible for you guys.
I'm not sure of some of the details of the game, so if anyone can fill me in, that would be great. Is this game running with or without planes? Does anyone have an RP file they could share?
I assume everyone got orders to Alan, since the deadline was today, so hopefully he can just forward them to me. If there's any problem with that, I may have to extend the deadline and ask for resent orders from everyone. Give me a day or so to figure that out.
In the mean time, a little housekeeping on my end - I have very simple house rules, which mostly concern getting orders in on time and making sure my mail filters catch them and direct them to the appropriate folder. I've attached them here, so please just browse through them real quick. For the most part, common sense prevails (I hope).
I like to send out acknowledgment of orders as soon as I get them, and deadline reminders the day before major deadlines. However, between work, driving and sleep, I only have an hour or two of free time from Tuesday to Friday, so I may not get a chance. That doesn't excuse anyone from getting orders in late. I am not afraid to NMR people, so prelims are strongly encouraged.

That should be about it. Any questions?

Guys,
Sorry for the delay, totally my fault. I got the delinquent set of orders, so we're good to go now. France and Milan trade blows this season, with Florence throwing his weight around too; Austria and Venice lock themselves in combat also, and Turkey glowers menacingly at Florence.

Guys,
Thanks for getting all the orders in on time. Unfortunately, due to a typo, Garry in Venice will be playing a unit short this year. Sorry, Garry, there was no time to ask for clarification.

DC-272 Fall 1456 Adjudication - TheWhiteWolf   (Oct 06, 2009, 7:19 pm)
Nathan et al,
Yes, this map-only variant will probably need some work. I'm thinking of trying one of the other time period variants, in which only six or seven powers are present, to see if it's more balanced.
As for the full variant, I'd love to run it eventually. I'm going to see if I can find an electronic version of the rule book first, or type it out if I can't. I suppose the AH/Hasbro website will be my first stop. There's also the option of scanning the whole thing in and saving a PDF. That would certainly be easier than typing everything out.
If I do decide to run a full version of the variant, it'll likely be done by hand, since RP obviously won't support most of the options. You'll all have first crack at playing, of course, and if/when it happens, I'll send out a private email before I start open recruiting.
Thanks again to Kevin and Nathan, our first and second to be eliminated. I'd love an EoG from Kevin, too! ;o)

Thanks WW for a well run game as usual.

As for not seeing it coming, I pretty much expected Joe to wipe me out based on the first stab, but figured I would at least try to play along on the off chance he was being honest - since I knew I couldn't stop either he or max from wiping me out, I had few options.

Can't blame Max for his stab either.

My sole consolation in this one was that I did take Rome and that the Pope was taken down - who also fought valiantly by the way - and no hard feelings.

For what it's worth, I've never played the full version of the game, but I think the variant definitely needs some work. I'd be interested in understanding how the full rules work, since I assume they would have led to a very different set of outcomes.

Guys,
We have a bit of press from a modern-day Niccoló, and an exciting turn to boot! We say goodbye to our Neapolitan, Nathan, who fought valiantly until the end and never saw it coming. Of course, lack of knowledge of one's death doesn't necessarily make it either peaceful or easy. Nathan, an EoG would be welcome, either now or at the game's ultimate conclusion.

Any issues or errors, let me know.

Map and RP file are attached for your convenience, enjoy!

Thanks all,
The White Wolf

DC-272 Fall 1456 Adjudication (dc272) TheWhiteWolf Oct 06, 07:19 pm

Nathan

DC-272 Declaration of War - ndeily   (Oct 01, 2009, 12:57 pm)
While I eagerly join this "coalition of the willing", let me point out that our Florentine friend actually created the conditions under which this Turkish invasion became possible by turning on his "Ally" (me) as we worked to take out the Pope so swiftly, a feat which would not have been possible without the Napolitan forces.

Had that stab not occurred, I would have had the builds to prevent (or at least substantially minimize) the Turkish assault.

Having said all that, he *did* stab, and all that *did* happen, so all we can do at this point is turn to reverse it, and Naples is very much on board.

Guys,
Quite an action-packed turn. Unless something drastic happens in the fall, we'll be saying goodbye to Pope Brutus. The heathens in central Italy have relieved His Holiness of his last two armies, leaving the Pope without the necessity of writing any orders next season. Venice chipped in, covering one of Kevin's centers.
In other news, France takes a beating and Turkey invades the boot, while losing his foothold further north. Venice looks to spread and secure his borders, while Florence tries to stretch out a bit. Naples seems caught in the middle, gaining and losing ground at the same time, and allies are pairing off in preparation of a violent mid-game.
Also, remember: keep things civil, guys. Nobody likes an angry board-mate.

DC-272 Milan's call to arms - MDemagogue   (Sep 29, 2009, 10:21 am)
Normally, I would be more than happy to join a war against the leader, but I really can't.   The governments of Milan and Austria are bent on my destruction, and have offered me no reason to fall on my sword.  France will fight until the last, and will support anyone who wishes destruction on Milan and Austria.  Revanche, mes amis!

As we are in no court, I am not going to plead a case, nor am i going to go further in my call to arms. We each have a version of the story, but Florence was always out for blood when Milan was trying to work for peace and stability (not that I am noble in nature, but the status quo work perfectly for me at the time).

My argument is simple, Milan is not ruled by a shining prince of moral and principles, and apart for His Holiness, I have strong doubts any amonst us would be able to claim so. We are but a pack of starving wolves fighting for SCs, using all the tricks in the books to achieve our objectives.
Oh, but my moral is so low that do not even care if I have been blighted. I am willing to forgive, I am willing to make alliances, willing to do anything if it means no single player gets ahead of the game. Balance of power is my paradigm.

A little laziness from our friend in Milan?

I'm in danger of sliding down a slippery slope here, and wish not to defend my actions, but the point with our friend Nick is simply this:

Who among us would acquiesce to a Non-Agression Pact, if the return on the investment was "you can have the home centers of France"

Very strange diplomacy there.

Nick is quite exhuberent, and I can understand that, but as I explained to him, deals are made on specifics, not in generalities. Less strange is that Nick opened up a dialogue between two of his neighbors, who readily decided that having a loose cannon overfocused on generalities and unwilling to negotiate as an ally was not a suitable arrangement.

 Mr Wolf,

My orders will come in due time, however would it be possible for you to circulate the following press in the name of Milan to all player?

Gentlemen,

As we have recently seen. The evil rulers of Florence and Venice have already committed blasphemy by declare war against God. Now they betrayed Milan after a pact of non agression was agreed between us. These two powers prove that there is nothing holy, nothing safe from their evil grasp.

I was surprised but did admire the well coordinated move against me. I understand completely the drive to prevent Milan from growing too strong in the north and what was probably perceived through the proposed pact to lead to me directing what should happen in the centre.
For all the brilliantly executed move, and considering that I directly fed Florence with information about my moves, I do perceive two cracks in the stone.
1) If you had hoped to gain credibility in the begining of the game, you no longer can, as players fear those who cannot hold to a pact. Not that it is expected to be binding, but guys you barely lasted 1 year before plotting against one of your allies. Even for Realpolitik this is considered cold! lol
2) As in Physics, "nothing is gained, nothing is lost, all is transformed". What served as justification to come at blows with Milan, namlely Balance of Power, has now completely shifted. The potential that I was glancing at, is now in the hands of Florence. Milan is no longer the threat, Florence is.

Now rest assured I hold no grudges, to the contrary I applaud the skill demonstrated. Now I can only hope to regain what's mine... and I'm not going to ask 'who is with me'... for we are all alone, but rather appeal to everyone's sens of balance. For if one player shines to brightly, he risks blinding all others.

Nick, Prince of Milan
