DC-272 Milan's call to arms - chaosonejoe   (Sep 28, 2009, 10:30 am)
A little laziness from our friend in Milan?

I'm in danger of sliding down a slippery slope here, and wish not to defend my actions, but the point with our friend Nick is simply this:

Who among us would acquiesce to a Non-Agression Pact, if the return on the investment was "you can have the home centers of France"

Very strange diplomacy there.

Nick is quite exhuberent, and I can understand that, but as I explained to him, deals are made on specifics, not in generalities. Less strange is that Nick opened up a dialogue between two of his neighbors, who readily decided that having a loose cannon overfocused on generalities and unwilling to negotiate as an ally was not a suitable arrangement.

Regards,
Joe

Mr Wolf,

My orders will come in due time, however would it be possible for you to circulate the following press in the name of Milan to all player?

Gentlemen,

As we have recently seen. The evil rulers of Florence and Venice have already committed blasphemy by declare war against God. Now they betrayed Milan after a pact of non agression was agreed between us. These two powers prove that there is nothing holy, nothing safe from their evil grasp.

I was surprised but did admire the well coordinated move against me. I understand completely the drive to prevent Milan from growing too strong in the north and what was probably perceived through the proposed pact to lead to me directing what should happen in the centre.
For all the brilliantly executed move, and considering that I directly fed Florence with information about my moves, I do perceive two cracks in the stone.
1) If you had hoped to gain credibility in the begining of the game, you no longer can, as players fear those who cannot hold to a pact. Not that it is expected to be binding, but guys you barely lasted 1 year before plotting against one of your allies. Even for Realpolitik this is considered cold! lol
2) As in Physics, "nothing is gained, nothing is lost, all is transformed". What served as justification to come at blows with Milan, namlely Balance of Power, has now completely shifted. The potential that I was glancing at, is now in the hands of Florence. Milan is no longer the threat, Florence is.

Now rest assured I hold no grudges, to the contrary I applaud the skill demonstrated. Now I can only hope to regain what's mine... and I'm not going to ask 'who is with me'... for we are all alone, but rather appeal to everyone's sens of balance. For if one player shines to brightly, he risks blinding all others.

As we are in no court, I am not going to plead a case, nor am i going to go further in my call to arms. We each have a version of the story, but Florence was always out for blood when Milan was trying to work for peace and stability (not that I am noble in nature, but the status quo work perfectly for me at the time).

My argument is simple, Milan is not ruled by a shining prince of moral and principles, and apart for His Holiness, I have strong doubts any amonst us would be able to claim so. We are but a pack of starving wolves fighting for SCs, using all the tricks in the books to achieve our objectives.
Oh, but my moral is so low that do not even care if I have been blighted. I am willing to forgive, I am willing to make alliances, willing to do anything if it means no single player gets ahead of the game. Balance of power is my paradigm.

Normally, I would be more than happy to join a war against the leader, but I really can't.   The governments of Milan and Austria are bent on my destruction, and have offered me no reason to fall on my sword.  France will fight until the last, and will support anyone who wishes destruction on Milan and Austria.  Revanche, mes amis!

Nick, Prince of Milan

As Austria and Milan team up against France, Florence seems to be everywhere at once, and Turkey picks a surprise target. DC-272 Leaked Report Urges More Troops - Brutus   (Sep 21, 2009, 4:18 pm)
Leaked Report Urges More Troops for Papal States
A report from the new Florentine and Neopolitan commanders in the Papal States says there is an urgent need for more foreign troops mercenaries, militia and civilians, and a new strategic approach to reverse Papal gains.

The frank and mostly gloomy assessment by Genralissimo Joe is still officially secret, but the Vatican News Agency published an unclassified version Monday, which it says has only a few deletions.

In the document, the general, who arrived in Bologna in recently, says "success is not ensured by additional forces alone, but continued under-resourcing will likely cause failure."

He writes the Neopolital ally's effort has long been "under-resourced," and that must change within 12 months or the coalition "risks an outcome where defeating the Papal forces is no longer possible." He says a lack of even the "minimum" resources is "a recipe for failure" in a counterinsurgency," and the Romans and related groups have made significant gains in recent months as a result.

DC-272 Spring 1455 Adjudication - TheWhiteWolf   (Sep 15, 2009, 9:34 am)
Folks,
Sorry again for getting this out late. I'll work at putting myself back together, at least as far as Dip goes. Okay, I promised myself the entire first game year that I'd start putting quotes from this variant's namesake in the adjudications, and kept forgetting. Well, I'm finally including one this season, and I hope it's the first of many. I haven't had much chance to peruse the list I was given, but I'm going to try to make each quote as situationally relevant as possible.
As for the action, it looks like we're continuing to see a lot of it. An alliance of non-naval powers seems to be forming in the north, the Pope is still getting dissed by the heathens, the Venetian merchants can't seem to find a friendly market, and the Sultan's forces haven't firmly committed themselves to anything yet.

DC-272 Winter 1454 Adjudication - TheWhiteWolf   (Sep 07, 2009, 5:17 pm)
Folks,
Hope nobody minds that I'm putting this out early. I don't expect to see any changes in the next 20 hours. Also, I'd like to apologize to Garry, who I made panic by claiming that he was late (apparently I was looking at the wrong line on my deadline matrix.) I figure, since Garry was so quick in getting me his "late" orders, that I owe it to him to release the results today. Surprised) Thanks for continuing to be on the ball, everyone.

My friends,

In light of what just happened, and as a genuine idealist, I wish to suggest that we put all hatred aside and perhaps thing of establishing a supra-sovereign institution in order to bring peace to Italy.
Who's with me?

Folks,
Sorry this wasn't out yesterday. Today was my oldest daughter's first day of school (ever!) and it's been a hectic week preparing everything. This season brings us our first clashes, as well as some unfulfillable threats of excommunication. Sorry, Pope Brutus, maybe with the next playtest you'll actually be able to follow through! No part of this board is boring, as we see action north, south and center. Namely, in a couple of shocking moves, Naples sneaks an army behind Papal lines, Milan makes an all-out assault of French Turin, and the heretics from the south sack a major Venetian trading post.
This won't make any difference this year, but please keep it in mind for future build seasons: This variant will use Chaos builds, via which you may build a unit in any free SC you own. This is to substitute for the lack of convert-able Garrison units, through which powers could switch between armies and fleets. (This is mostly a nod toward Austria and Milan, who wouldn't be able to sail otherwise, and Turkey, whose Navy would have been stuck ferrying grunts all game.) Without further ado, I give you the results.

Folks,
Seems I forgot a couple of potentially very important arrows on the map. I've just checked the box set, and the following army movement IS allowed:

Between Corsica and Sardinia (the two islands in the NW of the map)
Between Messina and Otranto (Naples home SC in the south of the map)

Sorry about this folks - I'll add arrows to the map soon (hopefully today) and send out a new version.
