DC-272 Map Color Test - FuzzyLogic   (Aug 24, 2009, 3:08 pm)
Well me and my lame-ass reg-green color deficiency have a hard time telling the 3 center'ish powers apart. Particularly the P, R, and M, and of those, the P and the M are super close. I think this is cuz the background is orangey, and those colors tend to blend in with the background a bit, or it washes them out. Again, it's solely cuz I have a hard time seeing red-green, and can never tell what the flipping numbers are on those card-tests. I wonder what the world really looks like in full color...

I would also use things like Random, ThinDiag, Hatch, Vert, Sparse, and any other fill pattern to make the powers fill by different shapes too instead of just colors for those of us who have a hard time w them. Smile

Folks,
I pulled out the old box set, and tried to match map and power colors as closely as possible. Of course, I couldn't get the land spaces exactly on, since the board coloring is so complicated. I got it as close as possible though.
Since these colors are based on the actual published game, they are my strong preference. However, I'll still happily accept comments and constructive criticism. Please let me know what you think.

Florence and Papacy province colors look *way* too similar for my liking - unit colors are ok. Rather than 2 "bluish greens" couldn't we have a Black?

Also - the map does not make the island-hopping ability readily apparent.

Okay, I forgot the arrows for the adjacencies...Working on that now. As for the other suggestions, I'm looking into different patterns. Black mixes with France's purple, so that won't work, else I'd have used it for Austria (whose color in the box set is light gray - hence the white.)
I tried to remove any traces of orange from the map, but I can double check my palette and see if there's a better color for the land. As for the "real world" in full color, I'm not the guy to ask. Apparently my color deficiency isn't as bad as Mike's, but some colors are too close for my comfort (such as the purple/black I mentioned.)
I'll add the arrows, and see what I can do to separate the Florentine and Papal powers a bit.

DC-272 Addendum to Rules - TheWhiteWolf   (Aug 24, 2009, 10:50 am)
Folks,
Seems I forgot a couple of potentially very important arrows on the map. I've just checked the box set, and the following army movement IS allowed:

Between Corsica and Sardinia (the two islands in the NW of the map)
Between Messina and Otranto (Naples home SC in the south of the map)

Sorry about this folks - I'll add arrows to the map soon (hopefully today) and send out a new version.

DC-272 Map Opinion Poll - TheWhiteWolf   (Aug 21, 2009, 7:56 pm)
Folks,
I've just finished re-coloring the map to match Standard (I think.) I'm not sure what I think of it, so I've attached it here. If you guys wouldn't mind giving me your opinions, I'd greatly appreciate it. (Compare it to the more orange-ey map I sent you all for reference earlier.)

Thanks,
Wolf

DC-272 Country Assignments - TheWhiteWolf   (Aug 21, 2009, 5:36 pm)
Folks,
Thanks to all of you for getting your prefs in nice and early. We're ready to go now - assignments and deadline are below, and a reference map of starting positions is attached. If anyone would like a copy of the RealPolitik variant folder, I would be perfectly happy to zip it up and shoot it out. Just let me know.
Please remember that this is a play-balance test. I don't know if this map will be completely eight-player balanced in the absence of all the special rules (money, garrisons, natural disasters, etc.) that are part of the box set game. As such, if you find yourself in a position that seems imbalanced, let me know. I'll take notes and make that part of my overall player assessment (which I'll solicit for again once the game is over.)
Without further ado, let's get this game rolling!

Players:

Austria: Aidan Slattery <AiSlattery(at)aol.com>
France: Mark Utterbach <MDemagogue(at)gmail.com>
Florence: Joe Babinsack <chaosonejoe(at)yahoo.com>
Milan: Nick Cherrier <zeclient(at)hotmail.com>
Naples: Nathan Deily <ndeily(at)yahoo.com>
Papacy: Kevin Burt <Brutus(at)wbhsi.net>
Turkey: Max Victory <maxatrest(at)yahoo.co.uk>
Venice: Garry Bledsoe <kielmarch(at)hotmail.com>

Deadline:

Spring 1454 is due Tuesday, 1 September at 2pm EDT (6pm GMT.)

Thanks once again for joining!

Machiavelli Game is now DC-272 - TheWhiteWolf   (Aug 20, 2009, 8:13 pm)
Folks,
We now have a number, which I need you all to use in the Subject line from now on (for filtering purposes.) Just as a reminder, the quicker I get country prefs from the last three of you, the quicker we can get this game rolling.
