1648 091010: Upcoming Adjucation - ellingermc   (Feb 06, 2010, 10:06 am)
I concur that I would like to have it be smoother.   (Even in my poor position!)

I do get confused by some of Charles' more enigmatic messages, and austria's leaving the game seemed to be because he wasn't playing as Charles wanted him too, in a communicative manner. I find non-communication unsocial, but not a reason for leaving a game by itself.
I would like to get a move on though

Harvey and I have already discussed our own dissatisfaction with the delays in this game. How does everyone else feel about it?

I would officially vote Yes for a DIAS, even though it deprives Nigs of his shot at the crown of the HRE.  Sometimes we have to make sacrifices for the greater good.

I do get confused by some of Charles' more enigmatic messages, and austria's leaving the game seemed to be because he wasn't playing as Charles wanted him too, in a communicative manner. I find non-communication unsocial, but not a reason for leaving a game by itself.
I would like to get a move on though

Everyone -

My two cents.

I have never resigned from a game, and have never gone absent.

As some of you know, a week or two ago I wrote Charles to say that I was on the verge of resigning from this game.  That apparently prompted him to find a replacement for Sweden.

I am absolutely puzzled (and pissed) by Charles' newest message.  This is a Winter Adjustment Phase.  What the heck is there to adjudicate?

Please, talk to me about the merits of DIAS versus mass resignation from the game.

I told Charles 2 weeks ago that I wouldn't mind calling the game, but
I'd also be willing to stick with it. Whatever the "majority" voted
for.

Considering these last messages, it's clear that the majority is
voting for DIAS.

So I vote for DIAS as well. If the vote isn't unanimous though, I'll
keep playing.

Harvey,
I've never resigned from a game in my life. I've also never abandoned
a game, although I've missed a deadline or two. Smile

I will vote for a DIAS, but I will not participate in a "mass
resignation" just to prove a point to a GM. I may never play another
game of Charles', but if he really doesn't have time for the game,
*he* should resign as GM or call the game a DIAS.

My two cents...

I agree with Mike's assessment.  There's no need for us to resign - why spoil so many unblemished track records?  It is within our rights as players to call for a DIAS.  This vote seems to have passed, assuming our brand-new, yet-to-order Swedish leader doesn't object.

Hi Harvey,

For me, I try hard and take pride in always getting my turns in and completing my games. "Abandoning" a game is not something I would be happy with, personally. I would be fine either with a DIAS, or the game being disbanded like it never happened, or if Charles' real-life situation enables a timely resolution of the game.

FWIW while certainly annoyed at the game I am not upset with Charles, per se: I'm sure it is a case of good intentions gone awry thanks to real-life. That said, I would like to move on.

I do get confused by some of Charles' more enigmatic messages, and austria's leaving the game seemed to be because he wasn't playing as Charles wanted him too, in a communicative manner. I find non-communication unsocial, but not a reason for leaving a game by itself.
I would like to get a move on though

From what I remember it seemed to me that Charles was imposing a style of play as a requirement on someone who was submitting moves, but not talking. I prefer conversations with other players, but don't see silence as areason for a player to be expelled. But I may be mis-remembering or misinterpreting. i am enjoying the actual play, and the variant and players. I'd happily try it again. I am reluctant to have the dias, because I'd love to see how the game might turn out, (will austria fall? will there be a mass stalemate in the centre?) but I wouldn't continue it with so many wishing to end it, so I wouldn't block the dias. Guys,

as it so happens, our replacement failed to submit orders. Despite my repeated warnings to him.

Such is the risk of taking on a newbie to the site.

Since I wanted to give him a chance to explain himself, I did not detail in my earlier note to you the reason for this delay. I was all set yesterday to get the adjucation out. Hoping for a last-minute arrival of Sweden's orders.

Believe me, this frustrates me as much as it does you.

I was hoping to have this game back on a smooth track. While I admittedly dragged my feet in getting a replacement, I don't see how I can be faulted here. I am committed to running this game smoothly to its conclusion. But if you guys want to end this in another way, that's your choice.

Charles

FWIW, I was annoyed at the manner of austria's departure, and discussed with Dirk and Harvey my concern sat that stage, and was persuaded to carry on.

Nigs, your annoyance is balanced by the annoyance of others at his gunboating.

My policy was clear on that count. In any case, it's one of those issues you'd rather not have come up. Naturally, I don't begrudge you being less enthralled about that step. Fair enough.

Charles

With regard to Nick, the original Austrian leader, my understanding is that Charles did not ask him to leave.  There's little doubt that a player not talking in a game based on talking whose position is in the center of the map is doing the overall game a disservice.  I was certainly not happy with it, and neither were at least some of the other players.  When Charles inquired to Nick about his unusual lack of engagement, Nick replied that RL had overwhelmed him and he was sticking with the game only out of minimal commitment.  Charles then offered to replace him, and Nick accepted, with very graceful apologies to all.

I'm glad to hear from Charles as to why there was no adjudication, which certainly isn't his fault.  That said, after having revived myself for Gabriele, I'm not looking forward to another delay in a game seemingly headed for stalemate anyway.  I would reluctantly prefer to end the game with a DIAS.

I am absolutely puzzled (and pissed) by Charles' newest message.  This is a Winter Adjustment Phase.  What the heck is there to adjudicate?

Please, talk to me about the merits of DIAS versus mass resignation from the game.

Regards to all from an angry Harvey

I do get confused by some of Charles' more enigmatic messages, and austria's leaving the game seemed to be because he wasn't playing as Charles wanted him too, in a communicative manner. I find non-communication unsocial, but not a reason for leaving a game by itself.
I would like to get a move on though

Charles,

Speaking only for myself, the frustration is a product of your not being forthcoming with the reasons-why there are delays. While on one hand it is thoughtful to protect a struggling player on the other it creates uncertainty and anxiety for the others as there are frequent starts and stops. If rationale around delays were accompanied by targeted restart times this would have made the troubles this game has had much less disruptive.

If you are willing and able to GM in your historically punctual manner and we have a full slate of dedicated players I would prefer to continue. However given that, apparently, the new Sweden has contacted literally no one it seems we are a ways from getting toward being on track.

Guys,

as it so happens, our replacement failed to submit orders.

Jorge's memory serves me better than mine. Nick was involved in a truly massive number of games and simply couldn't keep up.

Hi guys,

I'm happy to announce Gabriele Parachini as our new Swedish player. Now the Old World gets a little more representation. Smile Please give him a warm welcome!

Now, as for deadlines, in keeping with our Wednesday/Friday schedule, I'll schedule Winter for 5 February. Though should I receive a full set of orders without any express statement that I wait until Friday, I'll adjucate at an earlier date.

I hope we'll all get back into the swing of things before too long and apologise for the overly long hiatus.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

1648 091010: Update - charlesf   (Jan 04, 2010, 12:42 pm)
Hi guys,

Jeff was released yesterday from hospital, yet given the severity of his many injuries shall be pretty much confined to his bed for the next couple of weeks. Though he's in high spirits, he most understandably cannot keep up with the responsibility of playing right now. Lets hope he astounds his doctors by the swiftness of his recovery.

The upshot for this game is that I shall be seeking a Swedish replacement. I hope someone shall step in, much as Mike did in the case of Austria.

Jeff, you will be missed.

As for the trivial matter of our game, I'm suspending all deadlines and shall be in touch with you all once Jeff's back in the saddle.

1648 091010: Fall 1652 Moves - charlesf   (Dec 23, 2009, 11:21 pm)
Frohe Weihnachten!

It's been a good fall for the Lord Protector and the Cardinal! Godly rule now holds sway over much of Scandinavia, while the French have conquered strategically important Swabia.

This in turn adversely affected the Emperor and the Northern Crowns, though the Swedes were at least able to regain the Duchy of Courland.

In the Mediterranean, the Sultan has managed to seize Sicily and hence deploy his war galleys further to the West. Madrid was in the meantime beset by the inertia of its military leaders and failed to gain new ground.

I should add that I found a bug in the RP module. I had failed to denote Sicily as being adjacent to the Ionian. Should you want the fixed RP files, let me know and I'll send them to you.

Anyway, I shall be down in Greece as of now until December 29th and any game-communication of mine will be probably delayed until that date.

As you know, I've scheduled the Winter deadline for the 1st. Okay, now gotta pack my suitcase (and the odd present I have yet to wrap).

I wish you all a merry and blessed Christmas.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

Since Marc already broadcast his retreat order, this is a mere formality. I apologise for not having got this out any earlier.

Note that we'll have a slightly extended Fall deadline (8 PM instead of 6 PM CET). But since I'm at a Christmas party that night, there shall definitely be a delay that night and am unlikely to have much time to check your orders leading up to the coming adjucation, as I'm busy meeting a real life deadline. Anyway, please get your orders to me as soon as you can.

Grüß Gott!
The focal point of the season's military campaigns inarguably lay in northern Europe. The Swedish garrison of Novgorod left the city at the mercy of the Poles and thrust deep into the interior. Meanwhile, the debarkation of Cromwell's Ironsides in Scandinavian ports has introduced a new player in this wider Baltic arena. As for the Empire, France has been invited by the Spaniards to garrison the Rhineland, Sweden moved on the Danes and the Polish king secured the Brandenburg electorate for one of his younger sons, who had lorded over the Crimea before the Turks claimed those Tartar lands.

The meek Pope has also finally succumbed to foreign pressure and appears to no longer be the master of the Patrimonium Petri. That leaves only the undaunted Ukrainian Cossacks as the one lesser power able to claim some measure of independence.

I've now updated the SC Ownership count. Sorry about the earlier confusion.

Denmark's retreat is due on 18 December and preliminary Fall 1652 orders are due no later than 21 December, 6 PM CET (GMT+1). Note that we'll have a slightly extended Fall deadline (8 PM instead of 6 PM CET), as requested by a player.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

1648 091010: Spring 1652 Moves - charlesf   (Dec 16, 2009, 12:32 pm)

Charles

Guys,

I failed to update the supply ownership count. As always, if in doubt, the map's correct. I'll update the SC count together with the spring adjucation.

Cheers,

would it be possible to get a statement on this... Also, there should have been a removal of a danish unit that wasn't mentioned in the press (although it appears to be missing from the map but the paranoid DP voice in my head would like some confirmation Wink

Charles -

Also the SUPPLY CENTER OWNERSHIP for England is incorrect.

The map seems to be correct, however, but at this point I can't be certain.

Charles -

Are there errors here??  I have just taken a very quick look at the SUPPLY CENTER OWNERSHIP numbers, and at the map.  At least in regard to Denmark there is clearly an error.

Please clarify.

Thanks.

Well, suffice to say that the issue I earlier alluded to has been resolved and so we're back on track.

As for this season, I guess there's the odd newsworthy nugget in there though as a whole it may have been a more straightforward winter than in previous years.

Regarding the holidays, our last adjucation this year shall be the Fall 1652 Moves on 23 December. I've scheduled the following Winter 1652 Retreats/Adjustments for 1 January 2010. I hope this suits everyone?

Anyway, preliminary Spring 1652 orders are due no later than 14 December, 6 PM CET (GMT+1).

Frohes Wochenende!

Also the SUPPLY CENTER OWNERSHIP for England is incorrect.

The map seems to be correct, however, but at this point I can't be certain.

Hi guys,

it looks like we may not be back on track after all. I shall have to evaluate how to deal with what looks like a most unhappy situation and shall be back in touch once that matter has been resolved one way or another. In any case, a winter adjucation may not be immediately forthcoming.

I'm afraid Mike failed to meet the deadline. This

It's been fun guys.  Sorry that I was about 2 hours late in getting my moves to Charles.  I was busy at work prepping for a huge roll-out, and I never hit the Send button on the email with my retreat and build.

Good Luck with the rest of the game.

Charles,
given the likelihood that there would be a significant delay in recruiting a third austria, could we please have a vote on a draw proposal or proposals by the current players?
I suggest three way Poland-Turkey-France, given that these three countries are of a similar size, and significantly larger than the remaining three. It would be nice to draw the game to an end, rather than await a newcomer to a complex situation.

Guys -

My two cents on all this.  I have already indicated to Charles that I vote YES on either a Poland-France-Turkey draw or a Poland-Turkey draw.  In fact, I am prepared to vote YES on any draw proposal (Charles, please consider this a standing YES vote on any proposal, unless I specifically vote NO on something).  As I said to one of my college girlfriends (oh, those many, many years ago), "This was great for a long time, but now it isn't; so bye bye baby".

Hi Everyone,
While I would also like this game to end I will not vote for any of
the proposed draws thus far. I am hereby proposing and will vote yes
for a DIAS. There are a couple of other combinations I would vote yes
to that I do not participate in but haven't seen them proposed yet. I
will not propose them as it will reveal my intent to all should the
game continue but would certainly vote a private yes if they come up.

Harvey, you could be right. Or maybe its that the King of England and Scotland does so, rather than the Lord Protector.
However, I think it may be a more self-castigating flagellating approach: a English-French-Polish-Turkish draw. (Which would be ok by me.)
I mean His Most Catholic majesty helping the Turks into Rome - that must be more than 3 hail Marys and an Our Father. Excluding himself from the draw seems like the penance he wants.

Hi Everyone,

While I would also like this game to end I will not vote for any of
the proposed draws thus far. I am hereby proposing and will vote yes
for a DIAS. There are a couple of other combinations I would vote
yes
to that I do not participate in but haven't seen them proposed
yet. I
will not propose them as it will reveal my intent to all should the
game continue but would certainly vote a private yes if they come
up.

1648 091010: Game Status (dc279) charlesf Jul 29, 10:54 am
Hi guys,

please apologise the longer absence of your GM. I'm
still in Greece as we extended our stay here both in order to avoid the strike
waves here in Greece impeding our travel home and also since we wanted to extend
our stay here anyway. Given changed plans, being on a yacht or in countryside
unfortunately meant "no internet" and hence only now I'm able to catch up on
Diplo-matters, being back in the capital. In hindsight, I ought to have not
overoptimistically attempted to schedule a deadline during my holiday. Live and
learn. In any case, I'm flying back home tomorrow morning.

As my inbox filled up, I may have missed a set of
orders. I'll shortly confirm all orders I've received. Should you not receive a
confirmation of your latest orders shortly, please resend. On account of this
issue, I'm rescheduling the coming winter deadline for Monday, 6PM.

Greetings from Athens,

Charles

Guys,

I'm afraid I misclicked while doing the adjucation. Poland did NOT order "A Crimea - Moldavia" as the written orders summary would indicate. I spotted my snafu and corrected the .dpy file and map image accordingly, yet forgot to correct the written orders. I apologise for my absentmindedness and corrected this further below.

I'm afraid I also forgot to remind you that any Keppler predictions can be altered right up to the winter adjucation publication.

Well, I hope that covers it.

Happy Thanksgiving to those on the yonder side of the pond!

Charles

the entire former Danish sphere of influence has now witnessed major changes. The two Northern crowns are now at loggerheads, while the Commonwealth has gained a foothold on the continent. Farther in the East, the Swedens and Poles are engaging in manoeuvre warfare.

French troops now control the entire Po valley, whereas the Sultan finally took the fortress-island of Malta.

Retreats/Adjustments are due on Friday. Denmark's retreat may affect adjustments, so take not that you can condition any of your adjustments on what the Danish army does.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

Correct, I inadvertently sent off an old adjucation, sorry about that.

But as said, there's an unfortunate issue that first needs resolving.

Correct, I inadvertently sent off an old adjucation, sorry about that.

But as said, there's an unfortunate issue that first needs resolving.

The Emperor is dead, long live the new Emperor!

It clearly took the Electors a while to agree on who ought to be the new Holy Roman Emperor, yet I'm now most happy to announce to the world the end of this interregnum. Mike Hoffman kindly stepped in to rule the foresaken realm.

You'll find the contact information further below. Note that the winter deadline's Friday. So plenty of time to discuss matters.

Liebe Grüsse,

Charles

Subject: 1648 091010: Seeking a replacement for Austria

Hi guys,

I've received the following mail of Nick's in response to mine:

"I have honestly thought that I would have the time to do so in the past weeks, but found that I did not when it was too late. I think I should get my personal affairs on a stable footing, and that this should be my priority. I did not want to resign as I thought that would be harmful to the game, but if my non-resigning is also harmful, than perhaps it is best that I do go."

Continued near-gunboating simply presents too great a liability to the game. Since all hope in any improvement on the part of Nick's happens to be gone, I am now seeking a replacement for Austria and putting the game on hold.

I should add that two players who otherwise failed to submit their build orders on time would have suffered the due consequences of doing so. I made the judgement call that in light of the game anyway being on hold, I'd unilaterally postpone the winter adjucation until a replacement is found.

I wish I weren't put in a position in which I have to make these types of decisions since neither course is particularly pleasing.

My hope is that it won't be too long until we're back on track.

Charles
